​Polls opened across Japan for a snap legislative election on Sunday. Amid the winter cold and rare snowfall in parts of the country, voters turned out to cast their ballots.

00:04a day after Prime Minister Takahichi Sanae pledged to look after the public.
00:10We want to turn people's anxiety about their current lives and the future into hope.
00:15This coming year is about that, as hope is very important.
00:20Multiple opinion polls show that Takahichi's conservative coalition
00:24could win more than 300 of the 465 lower house seats,
00:28a significant gain from the 233 it currently holds.
00:33Japanese voters braved the winter cold to cast their ballots
00:36with rare snowfall covering parts of the country and possibly disrupting the voting.
00:43This is my first time seeing an election in such snowy conditions.
00:48But if you want to support the current government,
00:50you can't skip out on voting because of snow.
00:53It's our duty as citizens.
00:54Polls will close at 8 p.m. Japan time.
