00:00A cold earth? This discovery is out of this world. HD 137010B, catchy, I know, is a candidate planet that might be remarkably similar to earth, but it has one big difference. It could be colder, way colder than earth or even Mars.
00:18This planet is likely rocky and about the same size as earth, but it receives way less heat and light from its star, less than a third, in fact, from earth because its star is cooler and dimmer.
00:31This planet could be so cold that temperatures on its surface are never higher than minus 90 degrees Fahrenheit or minus 68 degrees Celsius. That is beyond freezing cold.
00:43So how was this planet candidate found? Well, scientists continue to mine data gathered by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, which was retired in 2018.
00:53In the data, scientists spotted this world located about 146 light years away.
00:58Further study is needed to confirm the exoplanet and determine its true temperature.
01:03But despite its frigid temperature, the scientists who made this discovery think that HD 137010B could possibly still fall within its star's habitable sun.
