As Quentin and Shelby, the actors are used to being the resident troublemakers of ‘The Best Man.’ But more is in store in ‘The Final Chapters’ of the story.

00:00I wanted you to see her heart. I wanted you to see, because she, you know, from the beginning,
00:04she's been this demanding, you know, always had everything that she wanted mapped out on paper of
00:10how she wanted everything to go, how the guy, what he wore, how he behaved, everything was
00:15always planned. So in the end, she has to let all of those walls down in order to get the person
00:23that she wants. She has to put all of that aside and be vulnerable and be open. And that was
00:29important for me that the audience see that because otherwise, then it's just not a real
00:35person. And I wanted the audience also to, I know they liked her. I liked, they liked her as a
00:41shit starter or whatever, but I wanted them to like her as a woman and as a person and to root
00:47for her in a different way. You need to find something you're passionate about. Redefine
00:56your purpose. I thought you found your purpose with that perfume commercial. Always in my
01:02playbook. Always in my playbook. I'm sorry. We all make mistakes. And you got to live with
01:11the consequences. I know what it's like to be a tired, overworked, exhausted mom. Wait,
01:16don't you have like three nannies? It takes a village. Thank you both so much for taking the
01:20time to speak with me. I'm Rivera from Essence. Hi. Wow. How are you? I'm doing well. How about
01:27yourself? I'm loving that purple. Just to kick things off, I want to ask you guys, both of
01:32your characters in this story, I feel like have gone through the biggest transformation
01:36over the course of the last 20, 25 years. I would say so. I think you guys have kind of,
01:42each of you have kind of flipped the script on exactly who we thought they were in the beginning.
01:46So I wanted to ask you what it's like playing a character in 1998, 99, and then turning around
01:52and playing them the same character a different way in 2022. Um, well, you know, listen, as the
01:59characters evolve, as we, the actors evolve, so must the characters, because our life is also going to
02:06inform the characters as well. But I feel like it was important to me because this character was
02:14introduced and, and she's, you know, listen, the character is, you know, iconic at this point,
02:20like it's, she was, she's so memorable. And it was known because she's memorable for these certain
02:25traits. So it was important to me for the third installment to go beyond that and to go and to show
02:32another side and more colors of this character so that you see all the sides of this woman. And I hope
02:40that I, I don't know what you've seen, but I hope that you see that I wanted you to see her heart.
02:45I wanted you to see, because she, you know, from the beginning, she's been this demanding,
02:49you know, always had everything that she wanted mapped out on paper of how she wanted everything
02:54to go, how the guy, what, what he wore, how he behaved, everything was always planned. So
03:00in the end, she has to let all of those walls down in order to get the person that she wants.
03:07She has to put all of that aside and be vulnerable and be open. And that was important for me that
03:14the audience see that because otherwise then it's just not a real person. And I wanted the audience
03:22also to, I know they liked her. I liked, they liked her as a shit starter or whatever, but I wanted,
03:26I wanted them to like her as a woman and as a person and to root for her in a different way.
03:32So I hope that I've pulled that off because that was really important to me.
03:37Well, like you were saying, the evolution of a character is like the evolution of one substance
03:43into another. Everything is the same substance, just under different motion and pressure conditions.
03:50It crystallizes or it vaporizes or it solidifies. And our characters are still going to be the core
03:58of those atomic structures, those foundational things that make up our humanity. And that's why I think
04:05it's resonated so well, but they're going to crystallize under different pressures. And well,
04:13one day it'll all repeat itself again and having people appreciate it and the fans come out and
04:21resonate with it, I think is the greatest blessing.
04:25Yeah. And I feel like Terrence, you in particular, like in your personally, you seem very like tapped
04:30into like energies and things like that. How do you feel like you use that to kind of inform
04:34this new iteration of Q? The strangest thing about a light, if it brightens, it's peculiar to us.
04:46And we've been frightened to have the spotlight be brightened in front of us or by us for fear of
04:56the reproach or the fear of being found out. You know, you just continue to shine.
05:03And to reflect whatever greater light and expect and accept and expect whatever comes graciously.
05:11You know, and I think as time goes on, we'll remember the divinity of one and you'll be like,
05:17oh, I'm the source of the light.
05:19Absolutely. Beautifully said. That is my time for both of you today. Thank you both again so much
05:24for taking the time to speak to me. And yeah, we're excited for the show. Thank you.
