Canada is expanding its Arctic military presence and preparing to open a new consulate in Nuuk, Greenland, a move viewed as a direct response to growing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. Ottawa says the deployment is meant to reinforce sovereignty, security, and regional stability, but the step has angered Washington, which has signaled renewed interest in Greenland’s strategic territory.

The announcement has triggered fresh diplomatic friction between allies, with reports that Trump ordered counter-measures after learning of the Canadian deployment. Denmark and Greenland welcomed Canada’s commitment, framing it as cooperation rather than confrontation, yet analysts warn the Arctic is becoming a new geopolitical flashpoint.

00:00Mr. Speaker, recent aggression by major powers towards the Arctic region
00:04have underlined the importance of Greenland and Denmark's sovereignty.
00:08This rhetoric isn't happening in a vacuum,
00:11and indeed, if left unchecked, threatens our NATO alliance and Canada's own Arctic sovereignty.
00:17Can the Minister of Foreign Affairs share with this House
00:19how our government is working with our allies
00:22to protect the territorial integrity of Greenland and defend Canada's sovereignty?
00:27The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs.
00:30Mr. Speaker, this week I will be travelling to Newke, Greenland
00:34to formally open the Canadian Consulate there.
00:39I will be meeting with my Danish and Greenlandic counterparts,
00:45where I will be reiterating the principles of state sovereignty,
00:48territorial integrity, and cooperation amongst Arctic states, including the Nordic Five.
00:54Here at home, we are investing more than $80 billion in Canada's defence and security,
01:01including Arctic security, and we will build Canada strong.
01:04The Honourable Member for Simcoe North.
01:09In 2016, Canadians built 2.3 million vehicles.
01:15Just last year, that number dropped to 1.2 million cars.
01:19And last week, more devastating news for Canadian auto families
01:22as General Motors lays off 1,200 employees.
01:25So when will this government stop telling people that it's eventually going to be okay
01:31and start delivering results for Canadian auto workers?
01:36The Honourable Minister of Industry.
01:38Mr. Speaker, of course, our hearts and minds are with the auto workers,
01:42and we're there for them.
01:43Again this morning, I was on the phone with Premier Ford and with Vic Fidelli,
01:48working on new opportunities to bring auto making even more to the country.
01:53That being said, what we never hear from the Conservatives
01:56is the fact that these auto workers are victims of the U.S. unjustified and unjustifiable tariffs.
02:04Why aren't they denouncing that?
02:06Why aren't we all working as one team Canada?
02:09That's what auto workers want.
02:11The Honourable Member for Simcoe North.
02:14Mr. Speaker, of course, we denounce those tariffs,
02:16but with all due respect to the Minister,
02:18she's had 10 years with her Liberal colleagues
02:20to protect the auto sector here in Canada.
02:24Now it's being reported that the government is going to reintroduce subsidies
02:28for Canadians to purchase electric vehicles.
02:31Really?
02:32Does the government really think that the way to save Canada's auto sector
02:37is to give taxpayers' money to Canadians to buy Chinese electric vehicles?
02:41The Honourable Minister of Industry.
02:46Mr. Speaker, what is clear from this government
02:50is that, notwithstanding the U.S. tariffs,
02:53we were able, after 10 years of creating 3,000 new jobs
02:59at the Windsor Nexstar plant, battery plant,
03:02which the Conservatives are against.
03:04Why being against 3,000 jobs in Windsor?
03:07And we were able also to create 4,000 jobs in St. Thomas
03:11in a Conservative writing.
03:14Why are they against it?
03:15Why aren't we all working together to make sure
03:18that we're tracking new investment in the auto sector?
03:21And meanwhile, we're working with the province of Ontario
03:24on a great auto strategy.
03:26Here, here.
