Mona Scott Young sounds off on criticism of LAHH and whether or not reality TV is really real.
Transcript
00:00you're a woman that many love to hate in terms of you're telling a story that some feel a certain
00:07way about it but you have millions of people who are now addicted to all of your franchises
00:12how do you feel about that um you know you're right there is a love-hate relationship with
00:17the franchise i hope it doesn't extend to um the relationship with me but i understand sometimes
00:22they shoot the messenger right um i think people are drawn to the show because they
00:27recognize the stories they recognize the people and sometimes what we're seeing is not always
00:33exactly how we'd like ourselves to be portrayed and so it's easy enough to just say ah this is
00:39horrible but i can't stop watching it but it's real it's real i mean you know there's so much um
00:45i guess questions controversy around whether or not it is real right we're not making up anything
00:51that's happening in their lives we're not making up um any of the circumstances that you're seeing
00:56play out on the show what we do is we put it within the construct of a production calendar
01:01of a production schedule you know where in real life you might say i'm never talking to you again
01:06and then you can actually walk away and never talk to that person again when you're shooting a show
01:10you've signed on to be part of an ensemble you're talking to them on tuesday yeah you go back and talk
01:15to them again on tuesday exactly so peter guns has said before that you know um maybe he and say tar have
01:21had a conversation the conversations were real but you had them reenact or different is that absolutely
01:26because everything that you see on the show is based on what they tell us right so when the people
01:31go you know they made me well i wouldn't have even known this was happening had you not shared this
01:36information with us so we have a group of ap's that are every day talking to the talent especially
01:41after scenes how do you feel about that and when they give us information about certain things like
01:46you're not going to believe the conversation we had last night oh we're like well we need that
01:50conversation because it's going to connect the dots for us on the story we've been telling so we
01:55recreate the conversation i always say you know we don't fabricate but we do recreate has anyone ever
02:01said anything or you ever read a comment and it made you take pause like step back but it affected you
02:06and maybe your approach um well not necessarily my approach but certainly has affected me i'm human
02:12you know and some of the things that they say can be pretty um vile you know i've had people say
02:20things about my children and you know i have a 12 year old daughter and my son is a teenager you know
02:25he's actually in college now he's 18 but you know they read social media they see the comments that are
02:30being made um so sometimes that stuff can be hurtful in the sense that i know that it may hurt someone
02:37that i care about right um but i stopped taking it to heart a very long time ago mainly because i know
02:44it doesn't reflect who i truly am do you feel there might be a double standard in the industry and i say
02:48this because if you look at say a bravo and andy cohen some of their um i don't want to call them
02:53characters castmates if you will for some of their franchises find themselves in very similar
02:57situations you know whether it's physical altercation or back and forth spats but they're not
03:02necessarily painted in the same light as you yeah well i mean listen we should talk about that all
03:07day because yes absolutely i feel that there's a different standard that i'm held to and i
03:11understand and accept the role that i have you know as a a black woman but i'm also a black
03:17businesswoman and i'm doing business much like you know my counterparts who aren't held to those same
03:23you know strict standards you know but what i also say all the time is that when you're talking
03:27about love and hip-hop in this very specific world and the people who navigate this world right
03:32they have their experience who have shaped who they are right and that determines how they react
03:36to situations how they you know express themselves much different from a doctor lawyer indian chief
03:43right and so you have got to take it in the context of the world that they're navigating it may not be
03:50the way you are and i communicate the way we resolve you know tensions or conflicts but there is a certain
03:57sense of judgment that i you know probably take the most offense to when i think about the backlash
04:03or the criticisms of the show it all comes from this very judgmental place and um i think that they
04:09are like i you know i say it all the time until i'm blue in the face there are tons of shows that
04:13people can watch who depict that depict different backdrops and different lifestyles right loving hip-hop is
04:18one leave them alone this is you know the world that they know the way that they navigate their world
04:23they have every much right to be here as you and i do
