00:02:40We did a lot of concerts over the years
00:02:43And the kids would always come
00:02:45So we would always be there together
00:02:48And experience those moments together
00:02:50We would literally be put to bed backstage
00:02:58Like we'd bring sleeping bags and pillows
00:03:00And we'd go to sleep with the sounds of a rock band
00:03:03Dad, because he was a promoter
00:03:10He ended up being like the host of the night
00:03:13So before the band would come up
00:03:14He was up on stage making the announcements
00:03:15And so I remember hugging dad's leg
00:03:18And kind of looking out at the front row of people
00:03:22But we also did little things promotionally
00:03:25I remember distinctly putting flyers out
00:03:27On like a car park full of vehicles
00:03:30And then going to concerts
00:03:33Watching Striper, for instance
00:03:36Just eyes popping out of my head
00:03:40Watching this band
00:03:42Going to shows with dad
00:03:44And getting on his shoulders
00:03:47Putting my hands over my ears
00:03:49Because it was just so loud
00:03:50And I felt a lot of pride being there
00:03:52Being my dad's son
00:03:54For me, music was just always a natural part of my life
00:03:58And our whole family's life
00:04:00We had a big barn out the back of the house
00:04:02And we had a band, you know
00:04:04Me as a three, four year old
00:04:06And pots and pans and the whole thing
00:04:07And we would play music together
00:04:09Like we would sell merch at our shows
00:04:12For our parents
00:04:13I mean, it was just so normal for us
00:04:16And so natural
00:04:16The Smallbone family is an amazing, crazy one
00:04:23And I love it
00:04:24So this is dad, David
00:04:27Our mom, Helen
00:04:29My older sister, Rebecca
00:04:30Daniel, the oldest boy
00:04:32Ben, me, Joel
00:04:35Here's Luke, Josh
00:04:37And Libby was not quite born yet
00:04:41But she was well on her way
00:04:43I think the DNA of the Smallbone family
00:04:51Is ingenuity
00:04:53Character
00:04:54Pursuing excellence in all that you do
00:04:58Taking what it is that you uniquely know
00:05:03And putting that back into the family
00:05:07I think it's creativity
00:05:09Faith
00:05:10One of the things that drew myself
00:05:13To the family
00:05:14Is the ways in which they carried themselves
00:05:18They behaved also like Christians
00:05:21So we love Jesus together
00:05:23So there was this cultural overlap
00:05:26A kingdom cultural overlap
00:05:28That gave us this connection
00:05:30I always thought of their family
00:05:32As being discipleship oriented
00:05:35Those people were a rock
00:05:37I mean, Helen is a spiritual powerhouse
00:05:39And David is just singularly focused
00:05:42And my plan was to live normal life
00:05:49Then on a really big tour
00:05:52I'd budgeted for the same numbers
00:05:54That this artist had toured with previously
00:05:56Not realising the economy was
00:05:59Was in a really bad place
00:06:01When you get on a tour
00:06:0320, 30, 40% down every night
00:06:05You realise the end is nigh
00:06:07We're down 10,000 people
00:06:09$25 a ticket
00:06:10So we lost
00:06:11We lost a quarter of a million
00:06:13We'd invested probably 15 years
00:06:18In the Australian Christian music scene
00:06:21Those two weeks
00:06:23Probably toughest
00:06:24Two weeks of my life
00:06:26This is what he was called to do
00:06:28This was his purpose in life
00:06:30This is what he knew how to do
00:06:32And when he lost everything
00:06:34He said
00:06:36I don't know what I'm going to do
00:06:38I just
00:06:39I honestly
00:06:40Didn't know how I was going to
00:06:43Pay the mortgage
00:06:44I remember getting the calls from them
00:06:46You know
00:06:47Calling me up late at night
00:06:48When are you going to pay for this
00:06:50We're about to foreclose
00:06:52All that type of stuff
00:06:52I was
00:06:55I was really not in a good place
00:06:57Tried to still do concerts
00:06:59But the industry
00:07:01Kind of wanted me to go away
00:07:02Because I was
00:07:04Been a bit of an embarrassment
00:07:05Australians
00:07:08They're known to be great fighters
00:07:10I used to have a statement
00:07:11If God closed the door
00:07:13David would have pulled open a window
00:07:14And we had no back door
00:07:16And I remember going to Helen
00:07:18And saying
00:07:19Hey
00:07:19Hey Dahl
00:07:20What about
00:07:22Where will we go to America?
00:07:25When it came to this announcement
00:07:42That we were going to the States
00:07:45I was
00:07:46I felt really proud of us
00:07:47Like telling my friends
00:07:49As a six, seven year old
00:07:50Like
00:07:50I'm going
00:07:51Going over halfway around the world
00:07:54To all my friends
00:07:55It was like the place
00:07:56That Disneyland was
00:07:57You know
00:07:57So
00:07:58You get to go to Disneyland?
00:07:59So cool
00:07:59Mum and dad painted all of these things
00:08:02As to be just a crazy adventure
00:08:03It made us feel secure as kids
00:08:05We didn't know what we were going to do
00:08:07And how it was all going to pan out
00:08:09Young Australian family coming to America
00:08:13Because we were very intimidated
00:08:15When we entered the country
00:08:18And we were going through customs
00:08:20I remember thinking
00:08:21That we might not actually get to come
00:08:24They saw so many people in so many bags
00:08:26And I'm five months pregnant
00:08:28So I'm pulling my tummy in
00:08:30So they can't see that I'm pregnant
00:08:32They could have turned us away
00:08:34But they didn't
00:08:35It was the fact that we were together
00:08:37The fact that we were eight of us
00:08:39And we learned to really rely on each other
00:08:42It was kind of an adventure
00:08:45Like those early years
00:08:46For I think all of us kids
00:08:48We felt very safe
00:08:49In mum and dad's love for us
00:08:53It was still such an adventure
00:08:57I didn't really know
00:08:58That anything was dramatically wrong
00:09:01But it was
00:09:02The plan when we first moved to Nashville
00:09:07Was for dad to manage a Christian artist
00:09:11And then probably grow that like management element
00:09:15So that was the plan
00:09:18And what happened
00:09:19What happened
00:09:20Came over to work for somebody
00:09:24It was an artist that I toured very successfully in Australia
00:09:27He left me
00:09:27Let me go after two months
00:09:29And so we were forced into living by faith
00:09:34The first six months or so
00:09:40Maybe the first year
00:09:41Were pretty tough for us all
00:09:43I shook in my boots every day
00:09:45Most weeks I didn't know how
00:09:47We're going to put food on the table
00:09:49Every day we would wake up
00:09:53And be like
00:09:54What's going to happen today?
00:09:56We're just about out of groceries
00:09:58We've got no more food
00:10:00We've got no more money
00:10:01I remember making the ramen noodle soups
00:10:03With the four
00:10:04We used to make four packets of ramen noodle soups
00:10:06Which probably made the combination of two dollars
00:10:11There was no furniture
00:10:12And we would wear our clothes through the day
00:10:15And then we would kind of pile our clothes
00:10:17Amongst a few sheets at night
00:10:19And we would sleep on these beds made out of clothes
00:10:21Like literally she'd tuck the sheets around the clothes
00:10:25Like our winter clothes
00:10:27So that we had a bed to sleep on
00:10:28Like not even mattresses
00:10:31We would have our parents ringing up and saying
00:10:34You know it's too hard
00:10:35It's not working
00:10:36Come home
00:10:36I knew innately there was nothing to go home to
00:10:39There was no retreat
00:10:41There was no alternative
00:10:42We had to make this work
00:10:44Moving to the other side of the world
00:10:45Working for an artist
00:10:47And then having that fall through
00:10:49Your only source of income
00:10:50Cannot imagine the vulnerability of that as a parent
00:10:53At that time
00:11:00My dad
00:11:02Had passed away
00:11:04A wound that my dad carries
00:11:10To this day
00:11:11Is not being able to say goodbye to him
00:11:13Because he was stuck over here
00:11:16And couldn't get back
00:11:17Because of visa issues
00:11:19That was hard time for me
00:11:24There was one day
00:11:31When my dad couldn't get out of bed
00:11:33He was so down about it
00:11:35Which is highly unusual for him
00:11:37He's like positive
00:11:38Almost to a fault
00:11:39When I came to grips with things turning from maybe severe to more severe
00:11:52Was we didn't have any food and we didn't have a car
00:11:56Rebecca and dad and Daniel walked to a convenience shop
00:12:03Easily three or four miles
00:12:04And I remember at sunset
00:12:09Waiting just outside for ages
00:12:11Waiting for them to come back
00:12:13We need a car
00:12:15Money, food
00:12:16To survive
00:12:17We're going to pray
00:12:18And we're just going to trust God for this
00:12:20And a lot of us remember Joel
00:12:22Specifically actually praying
00:12:23God we pray for a car
00:12:26I knew
00:12:30And I have a feeling
00:12:32It was probably just the peace of God
00:12:33That I knew that God would see us out
00:12:36That's when I started seeing the miraculous
00:12:40There was a family that ended up becoming really iconic in our family's life
00:12:45And that was the Moore family
00:12:46My introduction to the Smallworn clan was in the early 90s
00:12:51And we were having Thanksgiving dinner at our house
00:12:54And some of the people in the group said
00:12:56Hey there's a new family in town from Australia
00:12:59Should we ask them
00:13:00We said yeah that'd be awesome
00:13:00We showed up at this family's home
00:13:04Just seeing the enormous amounts of food
00:13:09I remember Joel sitting at that thing
00:13:11And he couldn't touch it
00:13:12He had to wait
00:13:13And all the kids are excited
00:13:15And you know it's like probably 30 of us there
00:13:17It was interesting because you know
00:13:20They didn't have a vehicle
00:13:22They were just getting around
00:13:23Who knows how
00:13:24And at this point I am eight months pregnant
00:13:27And I got pretty tired
00:13:30And I was like can you know
00:13:31Can you take us home
00:13:32My wife went to the
00:13:33Back into the bedroom to do something
00:13:36And I walked back there
00:13:37And I said
00:13:38Luanne I know this is crazy
00:13:39But I said
00:13:40I feel like we're supposed to give them our van
00:13:42And it's then that he pulled the keys out of his pocket
00:13:45And said you can drive yourself home
00:13:47It's just crazy
00:13:49I remember getting in it that night
00:13:52And the sense of provision I felt in that moment
00:13:58When you're sitting there
00:14:00And mom and dad are saying
00:14:01Yeah we have these needs as a family
00:14:03And then hey somebody just dropped groceries off on the doorstep
00:14:07Or dad just went to the mail
00:14:09And somehow he got a check for a thousand dollars
00:14:11And we can pay rent
00:14:12That makes you feel less lonely
00:14:14Makes you feel like somebody is looking out for you
00:14:16Many, many, many years ago
00:14:24I was a traveling artist
00:14:26In the early days of Christian music
00:14:28We were a fledgling rock band
00:14:33And we would tour Australia
00:14:35And we'd always heard
00:14:37That there was this kind of big time promoter over there
00:14:40And he never would work with us
00:14:42We never hit it big enough for him
00:14:44His name was David Smallbone
00:14:46The next time I saw David Smallbone
00:14:51Was one day in Franklin, Tennessee
00:14:54When there was a knock on my door
00:14:57And this fellow with a heavy Australian accent
00:15:00Said they had opened a business mowing people's lawns
00:15:03Almost immediately with dad losing his job
00:15:07We became a family unit and force financially
00:15:12People would give us odd jobs
00:15:14And we were working together
00:15:15It became kind of creative
00:15:19And that was my goal of grocery stores
00:15:21You know, you have the trolleys
00:15:22They have the rack underneath
00:15:25And I was at that point still small enough
00:15:29untuk menurut saya ke bawah ke bawah ke bawah ke bawah
00:15:33dan saya bisa melihat ke bawah
00:15:37sehingga kami membeli kawasan
00:15:41dan melihat sebuah misalannya.
00:15:43Dan saya menemukan, saya pikir,
00:15:45sebuah $10 atau $20 bill
00:15:47di bawah di bawah.
00:15:49Dan itu adalah kata-kata.
00:15:51Rebekah membeli babisik
00:15:53dan kemudian keluarga lain
00:15:55dan kami membeli muka orang lain.
00:15:57mereka yang terjadi di dunia.
00:15:59Di mana kita tidak menurut saya
00:16:01tidak menurut saya terima kasih.
00:16:03Saya tidak mempunyai untuk membeli
00:16:05baik, saya berpunyai untuk membeli.
00:16:07Saya membeli keluarga.
00:16:09Saya harus mencari ini.
00:16:11Saya tidak menurut saya tidak menurut saya
00:16:13melihat banyak orang yang membeli
00:16:15dan keluarga ini untuk pembeli
00:16:17dan membeli saya,
00:16:19tidak tidak menurut saya
00:16:20dengan maju,
00:16:21saya tidak menurut saya
00:16:23dengan keluarga saya,
00:16:25One of my distinct memories during that is being really frustrated at Luke
00:16:31Luke was always kind of the, what we call the PR guy of the family
00:16:35I remember one day we were raking leaves and he was sitting on the John Deere
00:16:40With his legs kind of propped up on the steering wheel
00:16:43And just talking to the owner for a couple hours
00:16:48It's a pain in the neck
00:16:51Lukey, they tell me you're the backbone of the raking team, is that true?
00:16:55Yeah, Luke's around, sitting on the line
00:16:59Luke is good at the public relations, you know
00:17:02I've always found it pretty easy to talk to people
00:17:04And I felt like if they were to talk to a six-year-old about raking leaves
00:17:08That there was a very good chance that we were going to be back
00:17:10And the answer is, was it a little lazy?
00:17:13He knew, he was a smart kid, he knew exactly what he was doing
00:17:25Kate, why don't you just start by telling me about your history with the Smallwood family
00:17:32All right, it started in about 1993
00:17:36Got a little flyer, said that there was a family from Australia
00:17:41That had moved to America
00:17:42And the dad's work fell through
00:17:44And so the first thing I thought was, oh my goodness
00:17:49What can I do to help this family?
00:17:52I figured I can minister to this family with food
00:17:55And the mom greeted me at the door
00:17:58And she was just this radiant, beautiful person
00:18:02She's got a baby in her arms
00:18:04And she's got all these children
00:18:06I couldn't even count them all
00:18:08I walked through the house
00:18:10And they didn't have anything
00:18:12I thought all along, why aren't these people sad?
00:18:17But they were not sad
00:18:19They had so much joy
00:18:22And were so thankful for anything and everything that God gave them
00:18:28That day, I went to be a blessing to the Smallbones
00:18:33And they ended up being a blessing to me
00:18:37Christmas came
00:18:48And I said to David
00:18:49I said, what are we going to do about Christmas?
00:18:51Because we got no money
00:18:52And I'll never forget
00:18:56They were telling the children
00:18:58That Santa had lost their address
00:19:01What I remember was
00:19:04Mom saying
00:19:06If he does find us
00:19:08He's not going to be able to bring us much
00:19:10It's probably just going to be things from the dollar shop
00:19:12I think we were all like
00:19:13Man, Santa doesn't care that we're poor
00:19:15There's no way that we're not going to get presents
00:19:18Santa is not dictated to by our financial situation
00:19:21He's going to find us
00:19:22And again, just this undying
00:19:25Child-like, literally
00:19:27Faith
00:19:28That he was going to show up
00:19:30A first grade class found out that we didn't have any way to buy gifts for one another
00:19:36Someone had brought it to the class
00:19:38And so the classroom, that first grade class, sponsored us that year
00:19:42And they went to Mum and they said, hey, we want to be kind of partner with Santa
00:19:45And sure enough, Christmas morning comes
00:19:49And still to this day, I've never had the amount of presents that I had on that morning
00:19:55To see the kids being blessed
00:19:59It was another element of God that I didn't expect
00:20:03Where it wasn't just our needs, food on the table
00:20:07But he went above and beyond
00:20:09And loved on them
00:20:11Because it was his point to me
00:20:13That was very special
00:20:16It was great because we were able to go back to Mum and Dad
00:20:22And be like, see, you know, if Santa doesn't care that we're poor
00:20:25You know, Santa takes care of the good kids
00:20:27Why'd you ever doubt Santa?
00:20:29Of course he was going to
00:20:30He was going to come
00:20:31Santa was going to come through
00:20:32And she kind of smiled knowingly
00:20:35I'm going to bring Elizabeth
00:20:37I'm going to bring Elizabeth
00:20:39She's been doing Whitney Houston impersonations
00:20:49Come on, Beth, go for it
00:20:51Let's sing, Beth
00:20:51Show them the training that I've been doing
00:20:54Pretty soon after we moved, Dad had more time on his hands
00:20:59So it very naturally just kind of moved over to working with me
00:21:02And I remember Dad doing rehearsals with Rebecca
00:21:07Who was 15 maybe
00:21:08With a wooden spoon
00:21:09You know, very glamorous situation
00:21:13Dad was taking Rebecca to all these different record labels
00:21:20Some of them, you know, Dad and her twice
00:21:23And man, the resilience and the thick skin
00:21:27Like just, from what I understand, kind of toned down left and right
00:21:31David mentioned to me
00:21:33After a few months of mowing our lawn
00:21:36That, you know, Rebecca was a singer
00:21:38I didn't even know that
00:21:39I was looking for a young girl artist
00:21:43That would want to sing to her peers
00:21:46And she was doing a few songs at their church
00:21:50And asked me if I would take a listen
00:21:53There's a thousand seat room
00:21:54There's four people in the room
00:21:56And I remember watching this as, you know, a boy
00:21:59Going, man, my big sister, what a superhero
00:22:01Like her confidence and her charisma
00:22:04To kind of stand in the most awkward, unflattering situation
00:22:11In an empty room and just sing these songs
00:22:13Was incredibly courageous
00:22:15And she's a courageous woman
00:22:17When it came time that Rebecca started to do tours
00:22:34We couldn't bear the thought of being separated
00:22:37We'd already become that family unit
00:22:39Like we were already doing school together
00:22:41So the natural next step was basically to become
00:22:45The Australian version of the Von Trapp family
00:22:47We were in a 15-seater passenger van with all of us
00:22:53And sibling squabbles
00:22:54And, you know, I was a bossy big sister
00:22:57For sure
00:22:58The first time I met the Smallbones was 1996
00:23:01The van pulling up
00:23:04And the entire Smallbone clan comes out
00:23:07Just kind of like
00:23:08Another one
00:23:09And another one
00:23:10And another one
00:23:10You know, I was like
00:23:11How many kids do you guys have?
00:23:14Dad needed a cheap road crew
00:23:15So we became the guys
00:23:18Initially, we didn't have massive responsibilities
00:23:23Like we had this tiny little backdrop
00:23:25That we propped up
00:23:26And had a couple power cans
00:23:27And we had these two moving lights
00:23:29Called track spots
00:23:30That we just thought
00:23:30Were the most amazing thing
00:23:32We were in a pattern
00:23:37Of continually trying to get better
00:23:39You know, to try and get better at our craft
00:23:41We were put out there
00:23:44And failure wasn't an option
00:23:46And you just figured it out
00:23:47We all kind of did merch at some point
00:23:50I've absolutely sold many a t-shirt
00:23:53In my type
00:23:53Joel probably didn't get that
00:23:55Merch job
00:23:55Because he didn't know
00:23:57How to add and subtract very well
00:23:59I became the merch guy
00:24:01For maybe a night or two
00:24:03And I basically built
00:24:04Built a castle
00:24:06Out of cassette tapes
00:24:07That's when I was so
00:24:08I was so proud of myself
00:24:10Were you fired from that job?
00:24:13Why did you want to stay in it?
00:24:19Yes, I was fired
00:24:21But I don't think any of us
00:24:22Thought of it that way
00:24:23There was such a shuffle at that point
00:24:26Looking back now again
00:24:27hindsight 2020
00:24:28You could see dad
00:24:30Being kind of the ultimate
00:24:31Like orchestrator in that moment
00:24:33Kind of going
00:24:34Okay, well that didn't really suit him
00:24:36And so he should probably go and do this
00:24:38And we all ended up
00:24:40Finding these sweet spots
00:24:42They needed someone to be able to sing harmonies
00:24:46And I hadn't hit puberty yet
00:24:48And so I could fly scoring high above my sister
00:24:51And that's when I started singing
00:24:53And so I used to sing
00:24:54I never got
00:24:55They wouldn't allow me to get up on stage
00:24:56I would sing from the boards
00:24:58I eventually got promoted
00:25:00To being the lighting director
00:25:02And I used to at one point
00:25:03Try and sing background vocals
00:25:05While I was running lights
00:25:06That didn't last for very long
00:25:09Maybe we should just mute the drums for that section
00:25:12Because it's the drums that have thrown me off
00:25:13You are my savior
00:25:16And you are my god
00:25:18You are my love
00:25:20You are my help
00:25:21I remember the moment
00:25:23You are my love
00:25:23The second record was done
00:25:25And we went by
00:25:26To pick up the seat
00:25:28Like that was the thing then
00:25:29You picked up the CDs
00:25:30And we pulled it out
00:25:32And saw this really unique
00:25:34Interesting cover
00:25:35Even as a youngster
00:25:38You could feel the kind of bubbling of energy
00:25:39Of like this
00:25:40We've got something really special
00:25:43And everything changed
00:25:44She very quickly graduated
00:25:50To having a band backing her up
00:25:52The 15 passenger van
00:25:54Went to two RVs
00:25:56That we actually bought
00:25:57And one housed the band
00:25:58And the other housed the family
00:25:59And even grew beyond that
00:26:01Even in that first record
00:26:02To like two RVs
00:26:03And a bus
00:26:04A touring bus
00:26:04One time David said
00:26:06Hey do you want to come on set
00:26:07We were playing at like
00:26:08I think Kingdom Bound
00:26:09Together with Rebecca
00:26:10He said you want to come on stage
00:26:12And sing God with Rebecca
00:26:14I was like
00:26:14Of course I want to come on
00:26:16And I love that song God
00:26:17Here's Rebecca St. James
00:26:20Super Grammy winner
00:26:22Record sales in the millions
00:26:24Rebecca is a Grammy Award winning singer
00:26:26Featuring one of Christian music's biggest stars
00:26:29It was the launching pad
00:26:31Of Rebecca's career
00:26:32And ultimately
00:26:32Part of us
00:26:33Being able to sustainably be in the States
00:26:35The stage production grew
00:26:39From this little kind of
00:26:40Rinky dink backdrop
00:26:41To all these moving lights
00:26:43And it became much more elaborate
00:26:44It was perfect
00:26:47Because we as boys
00:26:49Were really able to like
00:26:50Sink our teeth
00:26:51Into programming and design
00:26:53In a much steeper way
00:26:54You kind of knew that
00:26:56Even if I don't know how to do this
00:26:57If we're in this together
00:26:59We're going to figure it out
00:27:00That breeds an amazing trust
00:27:02Within all the family
00:27:04There were trades and skills
00:27:05That were developed
00:27:06While supporting her
00:27:08The whole family grew
00:27:10In that season
00:27:11Do this, do that
00:27:17Order this, order that
00:27:19Follow my directions
00:27:20I think I know everything in the world
00:27:23Follow me
00:27:24Joel at a very young age
00:27:26Twelve I believe
00:27:28Had an eye for stages
00:27:29And at that point
00:27:30We were doing a lot of church staging
00:27:32And he got an expert
00:27:34At building stages
00:27:35And being our stage manager
00:27:37And loading in
00:27:39And being in charge of people
00:27:40As the crews got bigger
00:27:45And bigger locally
00:27:46You know, he's calling
00:27:47All the shots of where
00:27:48Everything goes on stage
00:27:49And telling these men
00:27:51That are like
00:27:51At least three times his age
00:27:53What to do
00:27:54And they look at him initially
00:27:55And go
00:27:55This guy is going to
00:27:57Be telling me what to do
00:27:58And by the
00:27:59By, you know
00:28:00Like 30 minutes in
00:28:02They were like
00:28:02Okay, yeah
00:28:02He knows what he's doing
00:28:03Up until probably
00:28:06Eleven or twelve
00:28:07My relationship
00:28:09With the stage
00:28:10Was very frightful
00:28:13Even checking a vocal
00:28:15In a room
00:28:17Where there was
00:28:19Maybe a dozen people
00:28:20In the room
00:28:21Was equally frightful
00:28:22For me
00:28:23During Rebecca's
00:28:24First record
00:28:25She had a song
00:28:26That she wanted to do
00:28:27A duet
00:28:27With me
00:28:28And we rehearsed
00:28:31I mean
00:28:31It's probably a two minute piece
00:28:33We rehearsed it
00:28:34For a month
00:28:34I don't think he had
00:28:36Any idea
00:28:37What the next step was
00:28:38He just was enjoying it
00:28:39Whatever
00:28:40And then this one night
00:28:41David came and said
00:28:43You're ready
00:28:44You can do
00:28:45You can sing tonight
00:28:46And he's like
00:28:47What?
00:28:48You can sing on the stage
00:28:49No
00:28:49No, I don't want to
00:28:50He cried
00:28:52He just said
00:28:54Oh, you can't make me
00:28:56So I went to our family dog
00:28:59Kimba
00:29:00Who'd travelled with us
00:29:00On the road
00:29:01And I cried
00:29:02To Kimba
00:29:03But I ended up
00:29:05Doing it that night
00:29:06And the tide
00:29:08Kind of turned
00:29:09He fell in love
00:29:14With the stage
00:29:14And from then on
00:29:16He kept going
00:29:17Just the tour
00:29:25That we're going to do
00:29:26In August
00:29:26We're now going to do
00:29:27In November
00:29:28Do a week
00:29:29Of start rehearsing
00:29:30The Christmas material
00:29:31Then go up to
00:29:33Canada for two weeks
00:29:35Then come back
00:29:36And do another rehearse
00:29:37What do you call that day
00:29:38That you have that
00:29:39Thanksgiving
00:29:39Straight after Thanksgiving
00:29:40And
00:29:42I think probably
00:29:47Some people have
00:29:47An idealised
00:29:48Understanding of what
00:29:50Life might have been like
00:29:52Being on the road
00:29:53It's just
00:29:54It's just an unreal world
00:29:56You know
00:29:56It really is
00:29:57Like that
00:29:57That breed dysfunction
00:29:59You're out
00:30:02And there's all these people
00:30:03That are just
00:30:04Applauding you
00:30:06And telling you
00:30:06You're good at what
00:30:07You're doing
00:30:08It's not
00:30:09It's not real life
00:30:11Rebecca's
00:30:13Time
00:30:14Was very hard
00:30:15She had the weight
00:30:17Of creativity
00:30:18All on her shoulders
00:30:19Joel and Luke
00:30:20Can share it
00:30:21Is this even
00:30:21Making a difference
00:30:22Sometimes you have
00:30:23That feeling
00:30:24Like does it even matter
00:30:25I know people say
00:30:26The music helps
00:30:27But I don't know
00:30:28These people
00:30:28It's really difficult
00:30:30Being on the road
00:30:32Is an incredibly
00:30:33Grueling
00:30:34Lonely experience
00:30:35You don't
00:30:37Have your friends
00:30:38Around you
00:30:39She was alone
00:30:40In so many ways
00:30:41She was alone
00:30:43On the road
00:30:43Because it was
00:30:44Pretty much all men
00:30:45I became the middle person
00:30:47I became a friend
00:30:48But I'm a mum
00:30:49And I've got
00:30:50Six other kids
00:30:51What am I going to do?
00:30:54You are
00:30:55A young girl
00:30:56Yet you are
00:30:57The primary
00:30:58Income
00:30:59For an entire family
00:31:01That's struggling
00:31:02To get by
00:31:04So with that
00:31:05Comes so many layers
00:31:06Of complexity
00:31:07That add to that
00:31:09The expectations
00:31:10Of
00:31:10The Christian industry
00:31:12Which a lot of times
00:31:14I think can be
00:31:14More harsh
00:31:15And more intense
00:31:15Than mainstream
00:31:16If the boys
00:31:18Rock out of their bus
00:31:19Pretty much in their
00:31:20Pyjamas
00:31:20And bed hair
00:31:21Which Luke does
00:31:23People will be like
00:31:24Oh look it's so cute
00:31:25They've just woken up
00:31:26They're just coming in
00:31:27Rebecca rocks out
00:31:28In sweats
00:31:29And bed hair
00:31:32It's like
00:31:33Oh
00:31:33Oh gosh
00:31:35She doesn't look like
00:31:35Her pictures
00:31:36My heart would go
00:31:38Out to her
00:31:39To see the pain
00:31:41To see the demands
00:31:42I would hit the wall
00:31:44Just exhaustion
00:31:45And being really young
00:31:46Doing what I was doing
00:31:46With a lot of responsibility
00:31:47And I did feel
00:31:49That I needed to keep going
00:31:51At certain points
00:31:52Where I was
00:31:53Pretty overwhelmed
00:31:54Or depleted
00:31:55Internally
00:31:56Because there was
00:31:57A lot of people
00:31:58That I loved
00:31:58Relying on me
00:31:59I think I squelched
00:32:04You know
00:32:05My own internal
00:32:08Like voice of reason
00:32:10Or self protection
00:32:11Probably a lot
00:32:12Just out of desire
00:32:14To do the right thing
00:32:15Or to serve
00:32:16I felt so called to it
00:32:18And so passionate
00:32:18But you can also
00:32:20Be internally
00:32:21Grieving some of the losses
00:32:22That go along with that
00:32:23Rebecca always wanted
00:32:25To be married
00:32:27And this idea
00:32:29Of like having
00:32:30Seven to ten kids
00:32:31At every turn
00:32:33There was a hope
00:32:35For love
00:32:35Since I can remember
00:32:37That was one of the
00:32:40Great difficulties
00:32:41Of her adulthood
00:32:44And something very hard
00:32:45For me to watch
00:32:46You know
00:32:47She's 26
00:32:4827
00:32:4828
00:32:49Going into her 30s
00:32:50Over a decade
00:32:52She started feeling
00:32:53Her dreams
00:32:54And hopes
00:32:54And desires
00:32:55Being shifted
00:32:55And it became
00:32:57A very frightful thing
00:32:59To step on stage
00:33:00Really I had such a dream
00:33:02To get married
00:33:03And have a family
00:33:04And like there was times
00:33:05Where I'd be crying
00:33:05Before a tour
00:33:06Because I just
00:33:06Didn't feel like
00:33:08I had enough to give
00:33:09I knew the weight
00:33:10That she was under
00:33:11And I knew
00:33:12The cost that she was
00:33:14Giving to everything
00:33:16And um
00:33:17The one thing
00:33:20That I feel so
00:33:21Very thankful to God
00:33:23She never lost her faith
00:33:24Through the hard
00:33:26The hurts
00:33:27The difficulties
00:33:27She has always had
00:33:29A beautiful faith
00:33:30And I was so
00:33:32Respective for that
00:33:33Because
00:33:33It was hard
00:33:35We have hearts
00:33:37Full of love
00:33:37That God has given us
00:33:38And God really calls us
00:33:39To love the unloved
00:33:41You know
00:33:41To see the way
00:33:44That God has used
00:33:45Rebecca
00:33:45She impacted
00:33:46A generation of girls
00:33:48Who are now mums
00:33:49And the boys
00:33:50Are impacting
00:33:51Their kids
00:33:51Is just staggering
00:33:54We are in many ways
00:33:56A legacy band
00:33:57Of
00:33:58Rebecca St. James
00:34:00The training ground
00:34:04And the ability
00:34:05To fail
00:34:05Kind of quietly
00:34:06In the background
00:34:07And to fall in love
00:34:09With music
00:34:10Because of our experience
00:34:12With Rebecca
00:34:13I've had the privilege
00:34:14Of seeing someone
00:34:15Go before
00:34:16And I really have always
00:34:19Valued and cherished that
00:34:20I've said it a fair amount
00:34:24Over the last few years
00:34:26And I believe
00:34:27With everything in me
00:34:28That if it weren't
00:34:29All Rebecca
00:34:31There would be no
00:34:32For King Country
00:34:33It's funny
00:34:36Because I've kind of
00:34:37Envied an element
00:34:41Of what Joel and Luke
00:34:42Have in For King Country
00:34:43And that is each other
00:34:45I have
00:34:46I've cried about the fact
00:34:48That I didn't have
00:34:49A Luke
00:34:50To do it with me
00:34:53Would have been
00:34:55Different for me
00:34:56But I'm glad for them
00:34:58I'm glad they have
00:34:59Each other
00:34:59And they don't have
00:35:01To do it alone
00:35:02Because it's hard
00:35:02It's a hard thing
00:35:04To do alone
00:35:04I'm thankful
00:35:07For the support
00:35:10That they have
00:35:10That has grieved me
00:35:12That I didn't have done
00:35:13I don't know
00:35:14I don't know
00:35:15I don't know
00:35:16I don't know
00:35:17I don't know
00:35:18What is that?
00:35:19And let's break down
00:35:20For Bobby
00:35:21Before King Country
00:35:35There was Joel and Luke
00:35:38Before Joel and Luke
00:35:52There was just Joel
00:35:54There was just me
00:35:55It was the days of NSYNC
00:35:58And Backstreet Boys
00:35:59And I was not a closet fan
00:36:02I was an overt advocate
00:36:04He was doing like
00:36:06Backup singing for Rebecca
00:36:07And he was starting
00:36:09To have his own like
00:36:10Persona
00:36:11You know he had like
00:36:11His own suit on
00:36:12And he was doing like
00:36:13His own moves
00:36:14And I remember thinking
00:36:15Oh okay
00:36:16Joel's got
00:36:16He's got some flair
00:36:18We would play these really terrible music videos
00:36:21Of Backstreet Boys
00:36:22And we were kind of the stars
00:36:24Of our youth group
00:36:25At about 16 he came to David
00:36:27And he said
00:36:28I want to perform
00:36:29I feel like God's calling me
00:36:31To do music
00:36:32David said
00:36:33Okay yeah
00:36:34Write some songs
00:36:35Get together
00:36:36I'll set up some writing appointments
00:36:38Let's make some music
00:36:39I created my own little EP
00:36:43Called Joel
00:36:45And I always loved the cemetery
00:36:46Because the J and the L
00:36:48Were like really balanced
00:36:49Something about music
00:36:52Really impacted him
00:36:53He was entranced by it
00:36:54And then we need
00:36:56To see
00:36:57More freely
00:36:59Our hearts
00:37:00To feel more
00:37:02Free
00:37:02To be
00:37:04To be
00:37:06Who we really are
00:37:08And I just thought
00:37:10Well that's that
00:37:11You know
00:37:12Here comes
00:37:13Super stardom
00:37:16So I took
00:37:20The demo around
00:37:21A lot of people in town
00:37:22No one's interested
00:37:23It's just crickets
00:37:25David actually had
00:37:27The very unenviable job
00:37:29Of being a dad
00:37:30And going to Joel
00:37:31And say
00:37:32It's just not good enough
00:37:33And so I went to him
00:37:42And I said
00:37:42I don't think
00:37:44This solo thing
00:37:44Is going to work too well
00:37:45Joel
00:37:45Going by
00:37:46Early response
00:37:48I think you've got to
00:37:50Consider something else
00:37:51What about
00:37:52Experimenting with your brother
00:37:54And Joel did not
00:37:56Wish to hear that
00:37:56He wanted
00:37:57To do it on his own
00:37:59The idea of
00:38:01Joel and I
00:38:01Working together
00:38:02Dad had been saying it
00:38:03For years
00:38:04Luke and I
00:38:05Didn't get along
00:38:05At all
00:38:06It kind of annoyed each other
00:38:08Pushed each other's buttons
00:38:10And he grew taller than me
00:38:12Which was very frustrating
00:38:13As an older brother
00:38:14He was a better vocalist
00:38:16Than me
00:38:17I loved to beat my brothers
00:38:20That was something
00:38:21That I enjoyed
00:38:22I at a pretty young age
00:38:24Could beat him
00:38:24At most sports
00:38:26Which
00:38:30Which in our family
00:38:32Didn't go over very well
00:38:33Because it was kind of like
00:38:34You're older than him
00:38:35You lost to Luke
00:38:36It was always that type of stuff
00:38:37The only thing I had
00:38:38Apart from him
00:38:40Was just raw
00:38:41Will and tenacity
00:38:43That was my gift
00:38:44And so dad
00:38:46Said
00:38:47I think you should partner with Luke
00:38:48And I said no
00:38:48Luke was playing basketball
00:38:52And he was really set on it
00:38:54I'd done all the training camps
00:38:56And everything my junior year
00:38:57And it came to the first game
00:38:59I was playing great
00:39:00And I went up for a rebound
00:39:04And came down
00:39:04And I tore my ACL
00:39:06And that was a big
00:39:08Pivotal moment for me
00:39:09In my life
00:39:10It changed the course
00:39:12Of kind of everything
00:39:14I had gone to mom
00:39:16And I said mom
00:39:17You know everybody in the family
00:39:18Kind of has their thing
00:39:19You know sports was my thing
00:39:21I don't have my thing anymore
00:39:22And you know
00:39:22You know what do I do
00:39:24Once again dad has sort of
00:39:27Tried to wear me down
00:39:29Like you should just do a song with Luke
00:39:30Like poor fella
00:39:31Look at him
00:39:32And maybe
00:39:33Out of sympathy
00:39:34Who knows
00:39:35I was like
00:39:35Alright well let's just
00:39:36We'll
00:39:37Write a song
00:39:39We actually played the song live
00:39:53Rebecca St James
00:39:54On one of her later tours
00:39:56Joel was dragging his brother along
00:40:01And resenting it in lots of ways
00:40:03Didn't have a great relationship with him
00:40:05Didn't really respect him
00:40:07He had no experience
00:40:09Writing a song
00:40:13Really performing
00:40:15Singing behind a microphone
00:40:17After that Luke and I
00:40:20For about five years
00:40:21Just wrote awful music
00:40:23We wanted to play a snippet for you
00:40:26Let's know what you think
00:40:28Nobody wanted to have anything to do with us
00:40:50You know we were not successful at all
00:40:52It was so bad
00:40:54He was working at a call centre
00:41:09I was living in mum and dad's basement
00:41:11I had a 1987 Oldsmobile
00:41:16That I named Old Betsy
00:41:18I put chrome hubcaps on it
00:41:19And illegal tints that I had to take off
00:41:22It was a strange time
00:41:23Those years were difficult
00:41:32I remember one month
00:41:34That I had like $10 left in my bank account
00:41:36And that was just the way it was
00:41:39We signed a development deal
00:41:43With the only guy in town
00:41:45That really saw anything in us
00:41:46A guy named Sean Shankle
00:41:47Okay so Sean
00:41:49Our producer just showed up
00:41:51With the keyboard player
00:41:52And we're going to go
00:41:53And we're going to go and say hi
00:41:55And the whole idea was
00:41:58That we were going to sign to Sean
00:42:00Doing some production development
00:42:01For six months
00:42:03For six months
00:42:04That was a budget
00:42:05We were going to have a record deal
00:42:06In six months
00:42:07There is no such thing
00:42:09As an overnight success
00:42:10If there indeed is something
00:42:12Or someone that can be considered
00:42:13An overnight success
00:42:14Then their success
00:42:16Is probably going to be
00:42:17About that long too
00:42:18The way that we saw things going
00:42:20And what actually happened
00:42:21I mean was just so far from reality
00:42:24I remember meeting David Smallbone
00:42:27He brought me The Deep
00:42:30Was the name of it
00:42:31And that was Joel and Luke's
00:42:34First band name iteration
00:42:35And it was an EP of four songs
00:42:39And I didn't like any of it
00:42:42Except for the first verse
00:42:51Of the first song
00:42:52I remember thinking
00:43:07I think there's something special
00:43:08Hidden inside of this
00:43:09We became his pet project
00:43:12And the amount of hours
00:43:14He poured in
00:43:15And time and resource
00:43:16You couldn't put a price tag on
00:43:19And it was
00:43:22Everything development
00:43:24Should have been
00:43:25It was awful
00:43:26It was rewarding
00:43:28Sean was good and bad for me
00:43:31He was good for me
00:43:32Because he pushed me to be better
00:43:33But he was
00:43:35He could be pretty tough
00:43:36And I kind of needed that
00:43:38I remember him going
00:43:42To the studio
00:43:42Saying hey
00:43:43You should try sing differently
00:43:44Which was hard for me to hear
00:43:47He taught me how to write songs
00:43:49He taught me how to sing
00:43:50In front of a mic
00:43:51Can you do Luke?
00:43:54I'm there
00:43:54You recording?
00:43:55Don't lean down too much
00:43:56Here we go
00:43:57It's boss
00:43:58You ready Frank?
00:43:58Yep
00:43:59They would write
00:44:00And write
00:44:01And produce
00:44:02And produce
00:44:02Goodbye
00:44:03To holding on to what could be
00:44:06Half cry
00:44:07But every tear has set
00:44:09You're free
00:44:10I'm not wait
00:44:11And all that is left to say
00:44:13Is goodbye
00:44:14I love you but this is
00:44:16Goodbye
00:44:18To something that just could be kept
00:44:21And it's time
00:44:22To cut the strings
00:44:23And start to accept
00:44:24I'm okay
00:44:25And all that is left to say
00:44:28Is goodbye
00:44:29I love you but this is
00:44:31Goodbye
00:44:32No, no, no
00:44:36Not there, not there, not there
00:44:37But they just kept at it
00:44:42You know, they don't stop
00:44:43There were times during that
00:44:48Where my wife would look at me
00:44:49And say
00:44:50Why are you doing this?
00:44:51This is going nowhere
00:44:52There was every chance
00:44:53That Joel and Luke
00:44:55Were investing in something
00:44:57That was a pipe dream
00:44:58There was every chance
00:45:00That Luke was just going to
00:45:01Keep working at this call center
00:45:03And Joel was just going to
00:45:03Keep road managing
00:45:04And that was kind of
00:45:06Going to be it
00:45:06They just
00:45:09What felt at the time
00:45:10They lacked authenticity
00:45:11You have to really
00:45:13Find where the struggle is
00:45:15Because I believe
00:45:17That that is what people
00:45:18Connect with
00:45:19And artists
00:45:20I felt if they could get
00:45:26To that real honest center
00:45:28That they could make an impact
00:45:30On the world around them
00:45:31I remember sitting down
00:45:37With Joel saying
00:45:39Okay, we've been doing
00:45:40All this work
00:45:40And I think we've got
00:45:41Some songs we can start
00:45:42To, you know, show
00:45:44But you're going to
00:45:45Have to perform
00:45:45I remember him saying
00:45:47Don't worry about that
00:45:49We got that
00:45:49We grew up our whole lives
00:45:50Doing that
00:45:50And I felt nervous
00:45:53Thank you very much
00:45:59Well, good evening everybody
00:46:01I'm Joel from Joel and Luke
00:46:04Joel and Luke
00:46:06Together, man
00:46:07Joel and Luke
00:46:08I do remember that show
00:46:12Very, very well
00:46:13It was friends and family
00:46:15And about every string
00:46:16We could pull
00:46:17To give off the perception
00:46:18That, yeah
00:46:20There's something
00:46:20Really happening here
00:46:21Like, this is really impressive
00:46:23And I think it works
00:46:24Kind of
00:46:24Shall we dance?
00:46:27Can we take a little moment
00:46:30To grow closer?
00:46:33We have like an intermission
00:46:34And Sean came in the back
00:46:36And he said
00:46:37We felt like it had gone pretty well
00:46:38And we felt like it had gone very well
00:46:39Yeah
00:46:40And he looked at me
00:46:41And he goes
00:46:41Hey, so guys
00:46:42Um, um
00:46:43Luke
00:46:44Uh, wow
00:46:44Can you hear yourself?
00:46:53And I thought
00:46:54This is mediocre at best
00:46:56You were trying to say
00:46:58This to the people
00:46:59That you'd been working on music
00:47:00For years
00:47:01Like
00:47:01This hasn't been in vain
00:47:03It did have the feeling of
00:47:05We're failures
00:47:06Like, we're failing
00:47:07Right now
00:47:07And so then that
00:47:17Started the next journey
00:47:18What instruments
00:47:20Can we play?
00:47:21And at first
00:47:22It was
00:47:22What instruments
00:47:23Can we fake?
00:47:24We kind of actually
00:47:25Started looking at the things
00:47:26That we could do
00:47:26And I was like
00:47:27Well, I can kind of
00:47:28Play a little bit of drums
00:47:29And that's when
00:47:30That's when we actually
00:47:31Started using a lot of drums
00:47:33On stage
00:47:33Because it was
00:47:34One of the only things
00:47:35That I could do
00:47:36We fought a lot over this
00:47:38It was like
00:47:39I wanted Luke
00:47:39To take guitar lessons
00:47:40Learn how to play the guitar
00:47:41Joel could play the piano
00:47:43And he was getting better at it
00:47:44And he would practice
00:47:44And then he would get mad
00:47:45At Luke for not doing anything
00:47:47Did you hear something?
00:47:48I did
00:47:48It's Luke
00:47:49We got him locked
00:47:49From the local wood
00:47:50Oh
00:47:51I have to leave
00:47:52And it's 201
00:47:53The little does he know
00:47:55We're keeping him locked
00:47:56In here for the next
00:47:57Four to five days
00:47:58Come on
00:47:58Four to five days
00:48:00Forty-five days
00:48:02Forty-five days
00:48:03I remember having
00:48:04A conversation with Luke
00:48:06And saying to him
00:48:08You need to decide
00:48:09If you're in or out
00:48:10Because
00:48:11You're not
00:48:13Contributing enough
00:48:14You're not pulling your weight
00:48:15It doesn't feel like
00:48:16Your heart is in this
00:48:17See Luke always bails on us
00:48:19A great source
00:48:21Of my frustration
00:48:22With Luke
00:48:23Was
00:48:24Him not
00:48:25Really leaning in
00:48:27And for better or for worse
00:48:28I was all in
00:48:29Joel
00:48:30As sharp as his jawline
00:48:32Okay
00:48:32Is his commitment
00:48:34To all of the things
00:48:36That make for
00:48:36King and country go
00:48:37Luke
00:48:38His hair is a representation
00:48:40Of his personality
00:48:41To me
00:48:41It's free
00:48:42It's in the wind
00:48:43He's kind of going
00:48:44With the flow
00:48:44I think you could say
00:48:45I was maybe a little
00:48:46Wishy-washy
00:48:47Luke's proclivity
00:48:48Is if he doesn't go
00:48:50All in
00:48:51Then he doesn't
00:48:52Really quite fail
00:48:53In his mind
00:48:54I think he was going
00:48:55I'll do this
00:48:56And I'll kind of lean in
00:48:57And I'll see what happens
00:48:58But it's kind of
00:49:00Joel's thing
00:49:00And if it doesn't work
00:49:02Then I
00:49:02I don't really care
00:49:04That much
00:49:04Because I'm not really
00:49:05Like
00:49:06I'm not really
00:49:07It makes it
00:49:07He'll pick you up
00:49:08Okay
00:49:08The source of frustration
00:49:11Got so deep for me
00:49:13Along the way
00:49:14That there were
00:49:16Certainly moments
00:49:18That going
00:49:18What am I doing?
00:49:19Like this has been
00:49:20Fun and good
00:49:21And I like having him
00:49:22As kind of a
00:49:23Little sidekick
00:49:25But I remember
00:49:26Even specifically
00:49:27When it started
00:49:28Getting more serious
00:49:28Going to people
00:49:29And being like
00:49:29Hey
00:49:30Luke shouldn't get
00:49:31Equal percentage
00:49:32In this band
00:49:33Right?
00:49:34He came to me
00:49:35And said
00:49:37Hey
00:49:37So we're going to
00:49:37Work on this
00:49:38Thing together
00:49:38See I
00:49:39I've done this
00:49:40A little bit
00:49:40Longer than you
00:49:41I've worked
00:49:42A little bit
00:49:43Harder than you
00:49:44On this
00:49:44What about
00:49:45We do 60-40
00:49:46And I was like
00:49:48What?
00:49:50I can't do that
00:49:51My brother's
00:49:53A tough personality
00:49:55He and I
00:49:56Fought a lot
00:49:57In those early days
00:49:58And it was
00:49:58Usually over ego
00:49:59And there was
00:50:01A lot of
00:50:02Frustration
00:50:03And a lot of
00:50:05A lot of arguments
00:50:06We fought a lot
00:50:07Fast forward
00:50:08Probably about
00:50:09Four or five years
00:50:10Though I got out
00:50:11Of the music business
00:50:12Right after around
00:50:13That first record came
00:50:14Joel drove me out
00:50:15I don't have
00:50:16Great fun memories
00:50:17Of that time
00:50:18It got really complicated
00:50:21There was this
00:50:22Sense of
00:50:23Well who's going to
00:50:25Call it
00:50:25When's the penny
00:50:26Going to drop
00:50:26I think if Joel
00:50:31Had to come to me
00:50:31At one point
00:50:32And said I'm out
00:50:33There may have been
00:50:34Pushback
00:50:34But I may have gone
00:50:35Okay I mean
00:50:36You know I kind of get it
00:50:37You know it's been
00:50:38Pretty hard
00:50:39And we haven't really
00:50:40We haven't really
00:50:41Done anything
00:50:42Because I don't think
00:50:43At that time
00:50:44Luke saw it
00:50:46As his
00:50:47Lifelong
00:50:48Job
00:50:50There was something
00:50:51In him
00:50:52I think that believed
00:50:53That his presence
00:50:54Didn't matter
00:50:55And he would
00:50:56Say to me
00:50:57A lot
00:50:57But if you think
00:50:59This is not
00:51:00The right path
00:51:00For me
00:51:01Or like
00:51:02Who are we kidding
00:51:03Like tell me
00:51:04Like almost tell me
00:51:05To be done
00:51:06We had to break through
00:51:14That as a writer
00:51:15And really find his voice
00:51:16First song I ever wrote
00:51:27That I was proud of
00:51:28Was a song called
00:51:30Crave
00:51:30And it was a song
00:51:32That I just wrote
00:51:32With Sean
00:51:33It came out
00:51:35Of a direct exercise
00:51:36That I had him do
00:51:37To try to get
00:51:38Into some pain
00:51:39And into some
00:51:40Compassion
00:51:41And into some
00:51:42Empathy
00:51:42And we'd been
00:51:43Studying lyrics
00:51:44And I was
00:51:46Looking at
00:51:46A U2 song
00:51:48And I was like
00:51:48Man at the end of the day
00:51:49Like we all crave hope
00:51:51Like look at these lyrics
00:51:52And immediately
00:51:53He was like
00:51:54That's a song I do
00:51:56That's what we were
00:52:01Always trying to find
00:52:02It was like
00:52:03Luke is turning a corner
00:52:05And becoming an artist
00:52:06Hope is what we crave
00:52:08And that will never change
00:52:11I kind of came to the conclusion
00:52:19That I wasn't going to do this
00:52:21One foot in
00:52:21One foot out
00:52:22Where I was like
00:52:23I got to give it everything
00:52:24To find out
00:52:25What this actually looks like
00:52:26As a result
00:52:30With him showing up
00:52:31His voice
00:52:32Has been a really important
00:52:34And crucial part
00:52:35Of
00:52:36For King Country
00:52:37Really the heart
00:52:37In some ways
00:52:38And we had spent
00:53:00That first year and a half
00:53:01Two years
00:53:01Working on their songs
00:53:03And we were getting there
00:53:05So then what we needed to do
00:53:07Was just start booking
00:53:08Our first showcases
00:53:10We would fly out to LA
00:53:12And Nashville
00:53:12And perform
00:53:14For different labels
00:53:14We played showcases
00:53:17For all the major record labels
00:53:19In America
00:53:19You know
00:53:20Showcase after showcase
00:53:21Warner Brothers
00:53:22Universal
00:53:23We did one for Sony
00:53:24They always sort of
00:53:27Saw some of the interest
00:53:28They saw some of the uniqueness
00:53:29But didn't see
00:53:30What they felt like was
00:53:31We're really going to
00:53:32Connect with people
00:53:33They're always looking
00:53:34For something quite narrow
00:53:37And you kind of got to be
00:53:40Right in that lane
00:53:41Joel and Luke
00:53:42Were so artsy
00:53:43I just wasn't sure
00:53:45That was going to happen
00:53:46But
00:53:48We had this shining beacon
00:53:50Of hope
00:53:51We had gotten this call
00:53:55From Atlantic Records
00:53:56In New York
00:53:57That we were
00:53:59Going to have the opportunity
00:54:00To play a showcase
00:54:00For their president
00:54:02And a few of their A&R folks
00:54:04Going up there
00:54:06With this like
00:54:07We're going to go
00:54:08And conquer the world
00:54:09In one of the great cities
00:54:10In America
00:54:10We thought we'd made it
00:54:13We rented a bus
00:54:15We were on a tour bus
00:54:17And we had rented a club
00:54:20And we brought our brother
00:54:21Daniel
00:54:21Did our lighting
00:54:22Like we had stacked the deck
00:54:24We were like
00:54:25Man we're good to go
00:54:26They walked in
00:54:28We were so nervous
00:54:29Great sky
00:54:37Tear in your eye
00:54:39Giving the light
00:54:40While the world
00:54:41Is watching
00:54:41Oh no
00:54:42Pull at your soul
00:54:44Say it's just a game
00:54:46Oh it's making me crazy
00:54:49Trying to save me
00:54:50Stay with the baby
00:54:51Wake up
00:54:53Staring for some
00:54:54Don't forget your name
00:54:56Welcome to a brand new world
00:54:59When no one knows
00:55:00A name
00:55:01A name
00:55:02Cutting you
00:55:04Through the static
00:55:05Static
00:55:06All I remember afterwards
00:55:13Was the evacuation
00:55:15It was like
00:55:16These people are out
00:55:18Like hardcore out
00:55:19They don't give a rip
00:55:20It was a low moment
00:55:25I remember riding back
00:55:27On the tour bus
00:55:29Crawling into the bunk
00:55:34And the sinking feeling
00:55:37Of like
00:55:38Is this the beginning
00:55:40Of the end
00:55:40I remember calling
00:55:42Mariah
00:55:43Knowing
00:55:45That I really wanted
00:55:46To marry this girl
00:55:47And just this feeling
00:55:48Of like
00:55:48What
00:55:48What am I going to do
00:55:50Like
00:55:50Where do I go from here
00:55:52I don't know if she knew
00:55:54It on the call
00:55:54But I remember crying
00:55:55I think that was
00:55:57One of the first times
00:55:58I remember
00:55:59Seeing this man
00:56:00That I thought
00:56:01Was very
00:56:02Indestructible
00:56:03And
00:56:03Just a
00:56:04Force
00:56:05I saw a crack
00:56:06I saw
00:56:07Rejection
00:56:08And pain
00:56:09Wondering
00:56:12If everything
00:56:13He had just
00:56:14Invested in
00:56:15And believed in
00:56:16Was all for nothing
00:56:17I think from the beginning
00:56:20I had
00:56:21Maybe more belief
00:56:22In him
00:56:23Than he had
00:56:24In himself
00:56:25He would ask me
00:56:26How can you be
00:56:27Confident
00:56:27That this will work
00:56:28I just
00:56:30Think it will
00:56:31Something special
00:56:32Is developing
00:56:33And this is
00:56:34What you're
00:56:35Supposed to do
00:56:36I just felt like
00:56:40It was important
00:56:41For him to know
00:56:42That no matter
00:56:43What the circumstances
00:56:44Looked like
00:56:45He was going to
00:56:46Make it
00:56:47That something
00:56:48Was going to click
00:56:49And it was just
00:56:49About the right timing
00:56:50And the right opportunity
00:56:51Yeah I've just
00:56:56Always believed
00:56:57I just knew
00:56:58It was going to happen
00:56:59Without Mariah's
00:57:04Belief in me
00:57:06Courtney's
00:57:07In Luke
00:57:07It just wouldn't
00:57:09Have happened
00:57:10Nothing's going to
00:57:11Take me down
00:57:13Nothing's going to
00:57:15Take me down
00:57:17Nothing's going to
00:57:19Take me down
00:57:20Today
00:57:21She believes in me
00:57:30She believes in me
00:57:38There was no going
00:57:42Back at that point
00:57:43It was such a
00:57:46Vulnerable
00:57:46Time
00:57:48Because everything
00:57:50Was hanging in the
00:57:50Balance
00:57:51We were really
00:57:56Able to
00:57:57Rally
00:57:58It was thick or thin
00:58:01We were going to
00:58:02Make it through
00:58:02And so we get back
00:58:05The dust kind of
00:58:05Settles and
00:58:06Just go right back
00:58:07At music
00:58:08Writing songs
00:58:09And trying again
00:58:11There were these
00:58:15Moments when we
00:58:15Think this is
00:58:16This is going to
00:58:17Work
00:58:17And at first
00:58:19They were few
00:58:19And far between
00:58:20But then they
00:58:20Started getting
00:58:21Closer together
00:58:22Slowly
00:58:23And then
00:58:26Mark Bright
00:58:26Took over word
00:58:27One day we're
00:58:29At the studio
00:58:30And a guy named
00:58:30Mark Bright
00:58:31Called and said
00:58:32I've heard some
00:58:33Of your music
00:58:34I want to sign you
00:58:36I was just
00:58:39Completely floored
00:58:41By the music
00:58:41I really decided
00:58:43In that moment
00:58:43That I'm going to
00:58:44Sign this band
00:58:45I don't care who
00:58:46Has passed on it
00:58:47I don't care about
00:58:49Anything
00:58:49I love it
00:58:50I said okay
00:58:51I need to meet the
00:58:53Manager
00:58:53David was like
00:58:55A lion in the
00:58:57Protective aspect
00:58:58Of it
00:58:58Making sure
00:59:01That this thing
00:59:02Would succeed
00:59:03And that they
00:59:04Would get the
00:59:04Right deal
00:59:05The right situation
00:59:06Be around
00:59:07The right people
00:59:07About to head upstairs
00:59:11And sign the next
00:59:13Decade of our lives
00:59:15Like
00:59:15Exciting but
00:59:18Nervous
00:59:19I think that
00:59:23There's this feeling
00:59:24From a lot of
00:59:24Young bands
00:59:25That if you can
00:59:26Get the record deal
00:59:27That you've arrived
00:59:28I think because
00:59:29Of our experience
00:59:30With Rebecca
00:59:30We knew that
00:59:32When you get the
00:59:32Record deal
00:59:33That's just the
00:59:33Beginning
00:59:34We had to figure
00:59:37Out a band name
00:59:37Because nobody
00:59:38Liked Joel and Luke
00:59:39Who wanted to go
00:59:40With Joel and Luke
00:59:41For days we were
00:59:42Just running through
00:59:43They would come
00:59:44With these big
00:59:44Lists of band names
00:59:45I mean every
00:59:46Road sign
00:59:47Every newspaper
00:59:49Article
00:59:49Every word I would
00:59:51See would become
00:59:52A potential band name
00:59:53Originally when
00:59:56Luke and I
00:59:57Started working
00:59:57Together
00:59:58Or writing together
00:59:59People would call us
01:00:00The boys
01:00:01And we
01:00:02We had a bit
01:00:03Of a problem with it
01:00:04We didn't really like it
01:00:05So we sat down
01:00:05At this meeting
01:00:06And we thought
01:00:07We're gonna come up
01:00:07With some band names
01:00:08I came up
01:00:09With the idea
01:00:09Of calling us
01:00:11All the king's men
01:00:12Like the Humpty Dumpty
01:00:13All the king's horses
01:00:15And all the king's men
01:00:16Didn't really have
01:00:17The right tone to it
01:00:18So our producer
01:00:19Said
01:00:20No
01:00:21It's for king and country
01:00:22You are for king
01:00:24For god
01:00:24For country
01:00:25For people
01:00:26It is you
01:00:27So from this time out
01:00:28We're gonna be called
01:00:29For king and country
01:00:30The live show
01:00:55Has always been
01:00:56One of our favorite
01:00:57Things to do
01:00:58It's been one of our
01:00:58Strengths
01:00:59And so
01:00:59It was always
01:01:00The label's always like
01:01:01If we can get you
01:01:02In front of people
01:01:02If we can get you
01:01:03In front of people
01:01:03Well winter jam
01:01:04Is that ticket
01:01:04So the first thing
01:01:06That I ever heard
01:01:07Was them on winter jam
01:01:09What I thought
01:01:10They did so brilliantly
01:01:11Was they gave you
01:01:13No reasons
01:01:14To not love their show
01:01:15Something special
01:01:17Happened when
01:01:17For king and country
01:01:18Got on stage
01:01:18Even if they
01:01:20Weren't headlining
01:01:21Everybody walked away
01:01:23From the show
01:01:23Like
01:01:23They probably
01:01:25Should have though
01:01:26They had all the drums
01:01:29And all the drama
01:01:30And all the
01:01:31King Arthur of Camelot
01:01:33Stuff
01:01:33There is no reason
01:01:35Not to love this
01:01:36It's just so
01:01:38Exciting
01:01:39Winter jam
01:01:41Is a
01:01:42Sort of plug and play show
01:01:43You do the same show
01:01:45Every night
01:01:46For three months
01:01:47It wasn't like that
01:01:49For them
01:01:49And every night
01:01:50Was a new group
01:01:51Of people
01:01:51Where can we tweak
01:01:52This just if it's
01:01:53A percent more
01:01:54To be better
01:01:55Than it was last night
01:01:56And I watched them
01:01:57Do that consistently
01:01:58Okay we're practicing
01:02:00About to go out
01:02:02And visit the people
01:02:03Waiting in line
01:02:04For the winter jam experience
01:02:06This is Boston Haan
01:02:07And so from about
01:02:17Like 3pm
01:02:19Till almost midnight
01:02:20We were doing
01:02:21Some kind of
01:02:22Show like thing
01:02:23For winter jam
01:02:23We really celebrated
01:02:26That moment
01:02:27Because it felt like
01:02:29The belief
01:02:31And the hope
01:02:31And the investment
01:02:33That everyone made
01:02:35Is becoming something
01:02:36They were all hands
01:02:40On deck
01:02:40In that season
01:02:41I was pregnant
01:02:42With our first child
01:02:43Jude
01:02:43We had two
01:02:4515 passenger seat vans
01:02:47One had a hole
01:02:49In it
01:02:49So that was exciting
01:02:50There is a certain
01:02:52Drive you have to have
01:02:54Or you more than likely
01:02:55Are never going to make it
01:02:56You're going to have
01:02:58To get in the van
01:02:59And you're going to have
01:02:59To drive the van
01:03:00Yourself all night long
01:03:01And then you're going
01:03:02To have to show up
01:03:03At that radio station
01:03:03And you don't even
01:03:04Hardly have a voice
01:03:05But you are there
01:03:06To do whatever you can do
01:03:08Because you don't think
01:03:09You deserve it
01:03:10Nobody could ever say
01:03:11That King and Country
01:03:12Was not willing
01:03:13To put the blood
01:03:14Sweat and tears in
01:03:15And even if they were
01:03:16Their dad wouldn't
01:03:17Have let them
01:03:17You get out there boys
01:03:21David's not messing around
01:03:23None
01:03:23I remember it was raining
01:03:27And so we put
01:03:28All their show flyers
01:03:29In Ziploc baggies
01:03:30And put them on
01:03:31Car windshields
01:03:32And parking lots
01:03:33And tried to get people
01:03:35To come out to this show
01:03:36And like people
01:03:36Actually showed up
01:03:43We had released a song
01:03:44It was our first single ever
01:03:46And it was a song called
01:03:47Busted Heart
01:03:48We were in New Mexico
01:03:50And people were singing it
01:03:52A little song that I wrote
01:03:54In a tiny little room
01:03:55It had gotten to New Mexico
01:03:56And it meant something to them
01:03:58The first moment I had ever seen
01:04:01A group of people
01:04:02That I wasn't like my family
01:04:03Sing my songs
01:04:05I just want to hear this band
01:04:07On the radio
01:04:08Because if people are going to get it
01:04:10They're really going to get it
01:04:11And you know they did
01:04:13People got it
01:04:15So we released the first record
01:04:20And kind of charge
01:04:22Into the music world
01:04:24And at that point
01:04:24It had been seven years
01:04:26Of development
01:04:27And there was so much
01:04:29Kind of triumph
01:04:31This was the result
01:04:37Of many years
01:04:39Of faithfulness
01:04:41Hard work
01:04:41Strategy
01:04:42And execution
01:04:43That even proceeded
01:04:44For King of Country
01:04:45It was a great tour
01:05:06It was a lot of stress
01:05:08For Luke
01:05:08Midway through that tour
01:05:10He started feeling ill
01:05:12He started losing weight
01:05:14We were doing a lot of crazy hours
01:05:16Of like driving
01:05:18Till three in the morning
01:05:20Napping in a hotel
01:05:21For two hours
01:05:22Getting back in
01:05:23You know
01:05:24The food's not great
01:05:24At gas stations
01:05:25But it kept getting
01:05:26Progressively worse
01:05:28I think I tried to pretend
01:05:30As if it wasn't real
01:05:31You know
01:05:32It's kind of like
01:05:32I've seen some symptoms
01:05:33Of my body's not quite right
01:05:35But I just
01:05:35It was like
01:05:35Man you just tough it out
01:05:37And you just keep going
01:05:37I had my wedding day
01:05:40And he was
01:05:41Skin and bones
01:05:43And this contrast
01:05:48Of that
01:05:49I found my life partner
01:05:51And I'm so happy
01:05:52To be married to her
01:05:52And then my
01:05:53You know
01:05:54My brother
01:05:54And my vocational partner
01:05:56Is not wanting
01:05:57To steal anything
01:05:58But is just
01:05:59Deeply unwell
01:06:00And we'd fought through
01:06:02So much at this point
01:06:03And it was finally clicking
01:06:05And I was like
01:06:06I'm getting married
01:06:07And you're married
01:06:08And you just have
01:06:09Your new child
01:06:10And you're
01:06:11Really ill
01:06:13Joel was still on a honeymoon
01:06:17And
01:06:19Luke's wife calls us
01:06:23And says
01:06:24I don't know what to do
01:06:28Luke won't eat
01:06:29Technically I still have
01:06:31A disease called
01:06:31Ulcerative colitis
01:06:32So sick
01:06:39I got down to about
01:06:40125 pounds
01:06:41And I
01:06:41I stopped weighing myself
01:06:43After that
01:06:43Because it was so depressing
01:06:44My hair was falling out
01:06:46Because it just was
01:06:47That
01:06:47Malnourished
01:06:49The doctor
01:06:50Was frightened
01:06:51When he saw him
01:06:52And said
01:06:52You
01:06:52You
01:06:53You get so weak
01:06:54Your muscles get so weak
01:06:55At that point
01:06:56That your heart
01:06:57You go to cardiac arrest
01:06:58His heart
01:07:01Was just going crazy
01:07:02All the time
01:07:03I would just
01:07:04Be in bed
01:07:05And pray
01:07:06Lord
01:07:06Cover his heart
01:07:07Tonight
01:07:07Like let everything
01:07:08Keep working
01:07:09And I stayed with them
01:07:12For three weeks
01:07:12Just cooking meals
01:07:14And supporting
01:07:14In whatever way
01:07:15I could
01:07:16And that held us
01:07:17Through that
01:07:18Very scary time
01:07:19We went to
01:07:21Luke and Courtney's house
01:07:23Luke
01:07:24Weighing less than me
01:07:25At that time
01:07:26Was just so
01:07:28So fragile
01:07:30Jude started crying
01:07:33And Luke
01:07:34Wanted to comfort
01:07:37His own son
01:07:38But he was too weak
01:07:39To pick him up
01:07:40I kind of dragged him
01:07:42Across the bed
01:07:43And really struggled
01:07:44To just
01:07:45Get his baby
01:07:47Into his arms
01:07:47So he could hold him
01:07:48He was bedridden
01:07:51And couldn't even
01:07:52Go on walks
01:07:54Outside the home
01:07:54There was family members
01:07:56That were having dreams
01:07:56About him dying
01:07:58I mean it was just
01:07:59Extremely sobering
01:08:00Extremely sobering
01:08:00Extremely sobering
01:08:01He was
01:08:03Really death warmed up
01:08:04And we didn't know
01:08:06What the future was
01:08:07For the first time
01:08:10In raising our family
01:08:12Both David and I
01:08:13Actually had to
01:08:14Contemplate
01:08:15That this may be
01:08:16A terminal illness
01:08:17That we might lose him
01:08:18And it's not a
01:08:19Not a place
01:08:20Any parent should need
01:08:21Should visit
01:08:22It's a hard place
01:08:24But it was
01:08:27An intense
01:08:28Few months
01:08:29Of just
01:08:30Around the clock
01:08:31Care
01:08:31And around the clock
01:08:32Worrying
01:08:34You know
01:08:35You never
01:08:35You never quite
01:08:36Plan for a moment
01:08:37When
01:08:38The person that you
01:08:40Love the most
01:08:41Says to you
01:08:41You know
01:08:43Just don't leave me
01:08:44And um
01:08:45And you know
01:08:47You say the things
01:08:48That you
01:08:48You can say
01:08:50And that is
01:08:50You know
01:08:52It's going to be okay
01:08:52I'm going to be fine
01:08:53And I didn't know
01:08:55If it was going to be okay
01:08:56I don't want to live
01:09:01Without you
01:09:04I'm not ready to live
01:09:08Without you
01:09:11So let's dance a little
01:09:15Laugh a little
01:09:17And hope a little more
01:09:19And yes let's dance a little
01:09:22Laugh a little
01:09:23And hope a little more
01:09:26Cause I don't want to live
01:09:28Without you
01:09:31Without you
01:09:35So I flew to a performance
01:09:46Where
01:09:47We played
01:09:49For the first time ever
01:09:51Without
01:09:51My brother
01:09:52And I got my wish
01:09:56Like I was
01:09:56I was in the stadium
01:09:57Doing the show
01:09:59Without him
01:10:00I was tuned in
01:10:03Live
01:10:04Watching that performance
01:10:04I remember that feeling
01:10:07Very very clearly
01:10:08The road does provide
01:10:10Some sort of like
01:10:11Band of brothers
01:10:12Mentality
01:10:12You know
01:10:13You're meant to be there
01:10:14And I couldn't be
01:10:15It was a strange night
01:10:20Performing
01:10:22Without him
01:10:24Knowing
01:10:25That he was actually watching
01:10:28It is brilliant to be here
01:10:31With you tonight
01:10:32It's a bit of a sad day for us
01:10:35As some of you might know
01:10:36My little brother Luke
01:10:38Who makes up the other part
01:10:40Of the king and country
01:10:41Is absent this evening
01:10:43He is ill
01:10:44We ask for your prayers
01:10:46And your support
01:10:48He actually turned away
01:10:49From the TV
01:10:51It kind of wept
01:10:52As a younger brother
01:10:53You still want
01:10:54Your older brother's approval
01:10:55And so
01:10:56I could see that
01:10:58I meant something to him
01:11:00And I could see
01:11:01A void on stage
01:11:02And it was
01:11:05The great solidifier
01:11:06Of our partnership
01:11:07Because I was like
01:11:08I don't want this
01:11:09All those years
01:11:12Of
01:11:13I didn't choose this
01:11:15I didn't want this
01:11:16To this place of going
01:11:19Not only do I want him here
01:11:22But I need him here
01:11:24Set everything aside
01:11:25Set family of origin aside
01:11:27Set our history aside
01:11:29Let's choose each other
01:11:32And we did that night
01:11:33Not only I think
01:11:40Relationally was that
01:11:41Moment in 2013
01:11:43The great solidifier
01:11:44For Luke and I
01:11:45But I actually think
01:11:47It was a great solidifier
01:11:48As artists
01:11:49Because
01:11:51Pain will find us all
01:11:54In life
01:11:54Suffering will find us all
01:11:55But for us
01:11:56In our dynamic
01:11:58Of childhood
01:11:59And growing up
01:12:01We had not been
01:12:02The frontrunner
01:12:04Of pain and suffering
01:12:05That was mum and dad
01:12:06And
01:12:07I think in many ways
01:12:09It gave us
01:12:09A song to sing
01:12:11We locked in
01:12:14As partners
01:12:15And as brothers
01:12:16We started to see
01:12:19Who each other was
01:12:20Individually
01:12:21It was the beginning
01:12:23Of this deep well
01:12:25Gushing forth
01:12:28And their music
01:12:29That was it
01:12:30That was when
01:12:31It started to blossom
01:12:32It was shocking
01:12:33To see it go
01:12:34So quickly
01:12:34It just almost
01:12:35Never happens
01:12:36The Lord
01:12:37Used all of that
01:12:38Hard work
01:12:38And gave them
01:12:39A much larger platform
01:12:41Please welcome
01:12:42For King and Country
01:12:43Knowing that I'm
01:12:44Very excited about it
01:12:45And I'm looking forward
01:12:47This song just came
01:12:48Through my office
01:12:49And they started
01:12:50Playing it
01:12:50And I went
01:12:50I can't believe it
01:12:52I thought it was
01:12:53One of the best songs
01:12:54I'd ever heard
01:12:54For King and Country
01:12:56Has reached number one
01:12:57On both billboard
01:12:58And Christian charts
01:12:59For King and Country
01:13:01Have exceeded
01:13:02Their wildest dreams
01:13:03With a chance
01:13:03To take home
01:13:04Two Grammys
01:13:05On Sunday
01:13:05The Grammy goes to
01:13:08God Only Knows
01:13:09No matter how hard
01:13:17Those trials
01:13:18You might face
01:13:18Might be
01:13:19There is always hope
01:13:20And that's the reason
01:13:22Why
01:13:22We do music
01:13:24Joel and Luke Smallbone
01:13:27Are one of the biggest
01:13:28Duos
01:13:29In the music business
01:13:31Two time
01:13:33Grammy award winning
01:13:34Rock group
01:13:34For King and Country
01:13:35For King and Country
01:13:37For King and Country
01:13:38Let's go
01:13:39It's just a sweet
01:13:46Triumph for everyone
01:13:47For their family
01:13:49For the band
01:13:50For fans who believe
01:13:52King and Country
01:13:53Have amassed
01:13:53Millions of fans
01:13:54They've scored
01:13:54Four Grammys
01:13:55Four
01:14:22So let them match
01:14:24Leave the post
01:14:25Put the ships
01:14:27And don't shine back
01:14:29And don't shine back
01:14:39Make no mistake
01:14:58This is not just a story
01:15:00About Luke
01:15:01Or me
01:15:02Or the band
01:15:02That we're a part of
01:15:03Not a story
01:15:05About record sales
01:15:06Or tours
01:15:06Accolades
01:15:07Or awards
01:15:08It's a human story
01:15:10About the people
01:15:11That persevered
01:15:12Through struggle
01:15:13Well decades later
01:15:15I saw the boys
01:15:16In one of their concerts
01:15:18As I was watching them
01:15:20Joel said
01:15:21There was a lady named Kay
01:15:23That helped them
01:15:26And I was just sitting there
01:15:27And I just thought
01:15:28Look what God has done
01:15:30Look what God has done
01:15:33It's record label executives
01:15:35And publishers
01:15:36Who gave us a chance
01:15:37When no one else would
01:15:38It's a story of faith
01:15:43That guided and provided
01:15:45During those dark nights
01:15:47And really long days
01:15:48If there's a legacy
01:15:51For Helen's
01:15:52In my life
01:15:53Is that we
01:15:54As a family
01:15:55Have encouraged people
01:15:57To take Jesus seriously
01:15:59It's a story about those
01:16:02Who believed in us
01:16:03And our friends
01:16:04Who showed up
01:16:05At our performances
01:16:06And encouraged us
01:16:06To keep pressing forward
01:16:08Helen, I'm sorry
01:16:11Life through life
01:16:12My hero
01:16:13Life
01:16:13It's a story about our siblings
01:16:16These sisters and brothers
01:16:19Who rolled up their sleeves
01:16:21And rallied
01:16:23To give their gifts
01:16:24And talents
01:16:26And hard work
01:16:27To partner with us
01:16:28For something greater
01:16:29Than themselves
01:16:30It's a story about our wives
01:16:33Courtney
01:16:34A mother
01:16:34Writer
01:16:35Speaker
01:16:36And my darling wife
01:16:38Mariah
01:16:38An actor
01:16:39Producer
01:16:40Latin
01:16:40Country
01:16:41Artist
01:16:41These great women
01:16:43Who stood for us
01:16:44When we could not
01:16:45Stand for ourselves
01:16:46I never dreamed
01:16:52That we would be able
01:16:53To be involved
01:16:54In impacting people's lives
01:16:56As a family
01:16:56Like we have
01:16:57It's only God
01:17:00Who can do that stuff
01:17:01This is not a story
01:17:10About the band
01:17:11We're a part of
01:17:11It's a great story
01:17:14Of a father
01:17:15Who never gave up
01:17:16I saw him as a boy
01:17:18Getting out of bed
01:17:20Every morning
01:17:21When he'd been rejected
01:17:22By everyone in this town
01:17:23To him
01:17:24Believing in his daughter
01:17:26And then believing in us
01:17:28It's a story
01:17:33About a powerful mum
01:17:34Who stood by her husband
01:17:36When it made
01:17:36Absolutely no sense
01:17:38It's a story
01:17:41About our elder sister
01:17:43Who cared for her family
01:17:44And allowed these two
01:17:45Ragamuffin brothers
01:17:47To place behind her
01:17:48On stage
01:17:49To find their own voices
01:17:51To story about her
01:17:52Finding love
01:17:53And a fulfilled dream
01:17:55Of family
01:17:55Using her voice
01:17:56Now stronger and brighter
01:17:58Than ever
01:17:59Alongside her partner
01:18:00Both in life
01:18:01And yes
01:18:01On the stage as well
01:18:02And lastly
01:18:04It is also a story
01:18:06About a pair of brothers
01:18:07Who honestly
01:18:08Didn't quite get along
01:18:09Growing up
01:18:10But chose through
01:18:11Injury, illness
01:18:13Failure and desperation
01:18:14To not only set aside
01:18:16Their differences
01:18:17But to find a common voice
01:18:18In music
01:18:19To band together
01:18:20With no plan B
01:18:22And no turning back
01:18:24I used to be a beggar
01:18:52Down on careless knees
01:18:56Till I got an invitation
01:19:02Into the courts of a king
01:19:06I'm moving on
01:19:11I'm moving on
01:19:12I'm moving on
01:19:14Keep moving
01:19:15I'm moving on
01:19:16I'm moving on
01:19:17I'm moving on
01:19:19You gave me my freedom
01:19:21Now I'm free indeed
01:19:25I'm marching out of the doubt
01:19:31Into trust
01:19:32Out of the me
01:19:33Into us
01:19:34I'm falling head over heels
01:19:40Into love
01:19:41Leaving regret in the dust
01:19:44No turning back
01:19:46No turning back
01:19:49No
01:19:51And if I'm caught in the crossfire
01:19:56I will stand my ground
01:19:59And even if I were to lose my life
01:20:06Your arms are where I'll be found
01:20:10I'm marching out of the doubt
01:20:14Into trust
01:20:15Out of the me
01:20:17Into us
01:20:18I'm falling head over heels
01:20:24Into love
01:20:25Leaving regret in the dust
01:20:28I'm falling head over heels
01:20:29No turning back
01:20:33Oh, oh no
01:20:35Turning back
01:20:38Oh, oh no
01:20:40Turning back
01:20:43Oh, oh no
01:20:45Turning back
01:20:48Oh, oh no
