Londres, 1957. Très solitaire depuis la mort de son époux, porté disparu au combat, Ada Harris fait des ménages pour de riches clientes. Un jour, elle aperçoit, dans la chambre d'une de ses employeuses, une robe Christian Dior pour laquelle elle a un véritable coup de foudre. Elle se met à rêver d'en posséder une dans sa garde-robe. Enchantée par sa découverte, elle décide de réunir toutes ses économies et de partir en France, direction Paris.
