La célèbre poétesse américaine Emily Dickinson, femme enjouée et rebelle, s'est battue contre les conventions de son milieu, au XIXe siècle. Ce film de Madeleine Olnek explore un aspect méconnu de sa vie, qui se lit dans ses poèmes : sa relation amoureuse avec Susan Gilbert, son amie d'enfance et belle-sœur, qui durera toute sa vie.
