BMW's all-wheel-drive technology reaches a historic milestone after more than 40 years of continuous evolution. What began in 1985 with the BMW 325i "Allrad" has transformed into the intelligent xDrive system, a technology that defines the dynamics and safety of the current range, adapting precisely to the new era of electric mobility.
From Pure Mechanics to Proactive Intelligence
The pioneering system of 1985 based its effectiveness on a fixed power distribution (37% front, 63% rear) via a mechanical transfer case, although the true revolution would come with electronics.
In 2003, with the introduction of the 'xDrive' name in the BMW X5 and BMW X3, the system evolved using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. This configuration allowed the vehicle to anticipate loss of traction before it occurred, distributing torque variably and continuously between both axles to maintain the agility inherent to the brand.
