00:00This infrared image taken by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope depicts
00:05X. El Gordo, a cluster of hundreds of galaxies that existed when the universe was six-point
00:10two billion years old.
00:12This view displays a clear assortment of unusual
00:15distorted background galaxies that were suggested in previous Hubble images of the area.
00:20The El Gordo Galaxy
00:25is a classic example of gravitational lensing, where the cluster's gravity bends into space
00:30and starts light from far away objects behind it.
00:34Due to El Gordo's lensing,
00:35distant galaxies become brighter and appear larger,
00:38allowing us to see parts of the universe
00:40that would otherwise be too faint to observe.
00:43This lensing effect can often
00:45also cause galaxies to appear duplicated or mirrored.
00:48One of the most prominent
00:50features is the bright red arc.
00:52Nicknamed El Enzuelo, or the Fish Hook, the light
00:55from this galaxy traveled for 10.6 billion years to reach Earth.
01:00It's unique red color is the result of dust from within the galaxy.
01:05The galaxy itself, as well as cosmological redshift, which refers to the redder hues from light
01:10waves.

01:11due to their extreme increasing distance from us.
01:15The long pencil thin line is known as la flaca, or the thin one.
01:20It is another lensed background galaxy whose light also took nearly 11 billion years
01:25to reach Earth.
01:27Not far from la flaca is another lensed galaxy.
01:30Containing an image of a single red giant star, nicknamed Coyer.
01:35It is literally impossible to see lensed red giant stars without the infrared technology
01:39and sensitivity.
01:40Coyer is the first individual red giant star observed at a stage.
01:45It is a staggering distance of over 10 billion light years from Earth, and is the first
01:48of its kind spotted by one of the stars.
