00:00Proximus from my kingdom.
00:05Ok, my first question is, why did you want to be in this movie?
00:10I've been a fan of these films since I was a child.
00:15When I was six years old, my mother would reluctantly...
00:20I put it on the TV because she knew I would hide behind the couch.
00:25Tear up, and I was terrified, and yet I couldn't look away.
00:30I just have always been just...
00:35Had this...
00:37I don't know...
00:40To the franchise, and then the last...
00:45I couldn't understand why they wanted to make another one.
00:48Because I thought it was a perfect...
00:50The trilogy, and then when I read the script, I saw that they...
00:55I went about it the right way.
00:57I was like, good God, what an amazing...
01:00edition, so the fact that I was being asked to be a part of it was like...
01:05Katrina.
01:06Yeah.
01:07Yeah, so you are a sci-fi lover?
01:09Which one are your...
01:10favorites?
01:11Out of...
01:12Out of...
01:13Out of the Planet of the Dave's.
01:15Out of all three of them.
01:16It's...
01:17I...
01:18I...
01:19I have no idea how...
01:20I...
01:20I remember the impact of Rise...
01:22Yeah.
01:23Uh...
01:24Because...
01:25I...
01:25I...
01:26I...
01:27...could not fathom...
01:28I...
01:29How...
01:30the...
01:30They train this chimpanzee to do all that.
01:32And then when I found out that it was this.
01:35This amazing chap Andy Serkis that was doing it.
01:38I was just blown.
01:40Yeah, it just really grabbed me hook line.
01:45And my wife and I were waiting.
01:50Just waiting for the next films to come out.
01:53And then when they stopped, we were harping.
01:55So we keep going back and watching.
01:57How many times?
01:59I don't even know.
02:00I don't even know how many times I've watched them.
02:04But the.
02:05The fact that I get to be a part of it is really.
02:10Like a really great dream.
02:13Did you talk to Andy Serkis before?
02:15I didn't have the chance to talk to him before.
02:18I met him for the first time last night.
02:20And it's funny because I.
02:23I don't often.
02:25I didn't get shy around people.
02:27But I felt very shy around him.
02:30My manager had to take me to him.
02:32And we had a really lovely chat.
02:35And I was so honored and pleased that he.
02:39I think.
02:40He likes Proximus.
02:41It's nice.
02:44Audience.
02:45I think the audience is going to see Proximus as the bad guy.
02:47The bad tape.
02:48But how would you.
02:50Describe him?
02:51I think that it depends on.
02:55Who's side you're on.
02:56Yeah.
02:57If you're rooting for the humans.
02:59And yeah.
03:00The bad guy.
03:01Because.
03:02I don't believe.
03:04Proximus believes.
03:05That humans have their purpose.
03:08And he's.
03:10Very interested.
03:11Supremely interested.
03:12In the history of homo sapiens.
03:15From their conception.
03:17He's read everything that he can about them.
03:20All the historical books.
03:22He's learned from.
03:23The winds and the lobs.
03:25He believes he can do it better.
03:29Therefore he wants.
03:30To do whatever he can.
03:31By any means necessary.
03:33To keep you humans.
03:35From getting power again.
03:37Even though you will have a place in his society.
03:40As a slave.
03:41Or something like that.
03:43Yeah.
03:43You know.
03:44You could sing.
03:45A song every once in a while.
03:46Make me laugh.
03:48And.
03:49You've said.
03:50Multiple times in the past.
03:51That you have a bit of an OCD.
03:53When you have to prepare for a.
03:55How did that affect your approach of Proximus?
04:00Did you need to spam his background or something like that?
04:04Uh.
04:05I.
04:07I.
04:08You know.
04:09Vote.
04:10OCD helps me in my work.
04:14Uh.
04:15Sometimes I have to learn.
04:18To try to.
04:19To try to.
04:20Turn the volume down a bit.
04:21Uh.
04:22But.
04:22Uh.
04:23It makes me.
04:25Obsessive.
04:26To the point where.
04:28I need to.
04:30Feel a hundred percent confident in the skin of the character.
04:35So by the time I get to camera.
04:37Uh.
04:38There's already a full.
04:40Fleshed out.
04:41Uh.
04:42Human or.
04:43The nouveau.
04:45So luckily on this one we had this incredible.
04:50Situation where they allowed us to come out and take part in apes.
04:55School and Alain Gauthier uh worked with us on movement.
05:00And taught us of the anatomical differences between the species.
05:05And how that informs the way that we move.
05:07And um.
05:09Then.
05:10Then on top of that you add the layer of like okay who is this character and and.
05:15So a bonobo moves like this but Proximus is kind of obsessed with humans so I think he's
05:19a little.
05:20More erect and I think he probably has a little bit of swag when he.
05:25Walks and um he wants the apes to be.
05:30Thrown off at how human he is how articulate how much he has.
05:35The control over the English language.
05:38Um.
05:38He understands that.
05:40Language is such an incredible tool and weapon.
05:45So uh all of it just fed into this.
05:50Wonderful experience uh to where I could watch it on the show.
05:55Screen last night and just feel you know maybe prouder than I have ever felt.
06:00I'm sorry I'm really curious about this one.
06:03Uh how did you find.
06:05Proximus voice because he's an ape.
06:07You can use your normal voice.
06:10Well the way that we were studying.
06:15Anatomical differences that informed the way we moved.
06:17Uh we all.
06:20So uh I remember we were four weeks in to.
06:25Movement and Alain Gautier asked me a question and I was moving.
06:30And I was doing his proximus and I didn't know how he was going to talk yet.
06:33And I went.
06:35I don't know what it is that you want from me.
06:40And he just went whoa what's that and then we started to film it and then.
06:45Sent it to Wes and then Wes was like oh yeah okay that's great um.
06:50Now let's dive deeper into the fact that the trachea.
06:55Is different the voice box is different so how are human sounds produced through this.
07:00Whole new set of instrumentation and then that kind of.
07:05Helped me think about like he's a guy who wants to be eloquent and articulate but is.
07:10Fighting through a different a different instrumentation so uh that's how.
07:15Kind of all came about um and it just it's kind of like this place where I click in.
07:20And when I become proximus it's not just the voice the body comes to.
07:25So it's like it's like it all goes together.
07:29That's what I need to do.
07:30How to use motion capture for this picture how.
07:35Is this different from a normal performance?
07:38It's uh.
07:40I thought that I would be imprisoned by.
07:45But I was actually liberated by it um because I was fully.
07:50Fully free of my human vanity.
07:54That annoys me.
07:55That annoys me.
07:55That annoying human vanity.
07:56That you know when you wake up and you look in the mirror.
07:58Yeah.
07:59Some days you're like.
08:00Ahh.
08:01Is that me?
08:02Sometimes you go.
08:03Oh that's me.
08:04But.
08:05It depends on the day.
08:06It depends on what's happening hermetically chemically in the brain.
08:10At the time.
08:11Um.
08:12I was released from all of that.
08:14I didn't care.
08:15What I looked like.
08:16I only cared that I was the king.
08:19And.
08:20That I walked and moved like this king.
08:24And.
08:25Um.
08:26This creature with this.
08:28High intellect.
08:30With this.
08:31Vision.
08:32For the future.
08:33For Aiptum.
08:34Uh.
08:35It.
08:36It.
08:37Completely consumed me.
08:38And.
08:39I.
08:40I didn't have to worry about my.
08:40Stupid human face.
08:41Um.
08:42My.
08:43My.
08:44My.
08:45Last question.
08:46Fifteen years ago.
08:47You were in another really big movie.
08:48X-Men Origins Wolverine.
08:50Uh.
08:51What are your memories about that one?
08:53Did you just call me Blob?
08:55Um.
08:56You just call me Blob.
08:57Uh.
08:58Uh.
08:59That.
09:00Was.
09:01Uh.
09:02It was a tremendous experience.
09:03Another character I got to disappear into.
09:05Um.
09:06Yeah.
09:07So much fun.
09:08Uh.
09:09Working with you.
09:10And being a part of that.
09:10World.
09:11And.
09:12Uh.
09:13Another character where I got to create a different body.
09:14And.
09:15Different gravity.
09:16And.
09:17Uh.
09:18You know Blob was.
09:19Uh.
09:20Immovable.
09:21So.
09:22When you play with those ideas of being immovable.
09:25Uh.
09:26It really kind of informs.
09:27Who this person is.
09:30Uh.
09:31It was a tremendous amount of fun.
09:32Yeah.
09:33And.
09:34Do you think the character is still alive?
09:35Oh.
09:36He definitely is.
09:37Whether.
09:38Whether.
09:39Uh.
09:40Whether.
09:40Uh.
09:41You know.
09:42Marvel decides to.
09:43Uh.
09:44Bring him back.
09:45Uh.
09:46To fruition.
09:47Is totally up to them.
09:48I would love it.
09:49Uh.
09:50So.
09:50Uh.
09:51You got my number.
09:52Thank you Kevin.
09:53That's right.
09:54That's right.
09:55Thank you so much.
09:56Thank you so much.
09:57Thank you.
