Analysis of Saturday's derby clash between Celtic and Rangers
Transcript
00:00Shall we do a bit on Rangers too?
00:01Because my goodness me,
00:03like you watch the first half of that game
00:04and it's all Celtic
00:06and everything could be different
00:07if they take some of the chances.
00:09Rangers do deserve a lot of credit though, Alan.
00:11I know you've been wanting to get to this.
00:13The way they changed the game,
00:14I think Danny Rule got quite lucky
00:16because the team selection was clearly all wrong.
00:18Yeah, he did get it wrong.
00:20He remediated it.
00:21And then at the second half,
00:22obviously everything better.
00:23He did get it wrong in the first half.
00:25And I'm not going to lie, I was worried.
00:27Sitting watching it with that first half,
00:29I was worried.
00:30Because Rangers outwith this Gassama effort
00:35didn't really lay a glove on them.
00:37They allowed Celtic to create lots of opportunities.
00:41Overloads in wide areas.
00:43I thought Rangers defensively at times
00:45went all over the place.
00:46The gaps were too big.
00:47Asgard didn't offer nothing,
00:49which left Barron and Raskin
00:52to do a hell of a lot of work
00:54to get out wide,
00:55to try and stop the balls in the middle,
00:56which didn't help the back line.
00:58But that being said,
01:01Danny Rule,
01:01and you actually seen him
01:02talking to his number two
01:04just before half-time.
01:05He understood that he needed
01:06Diamandio on,
01:08Asgard off,
01:09to get another guy into midfield.
01:11And actually,
01:12it worked really well
01:13where there wasn't as many gaps
01:14for Celtic to work in.
01:16They did have opportunities,
01:17but I thought Rangers as a whole
01:19looked a lot more solid.
01:21They looked a lot more confident
01:22in what they were doing.
01:24Chamiti,
01:24I thought,
01:25his last two games
01:26have probably been his best two games
01:28in the Rangers shot.
01:29And you can see the confidence
01:30start to grow with them,
01:31obviously with the goals.
01:33But I don't think
01:35it was a perfect performance
01:36from Rangers.
01:37I think there's still
01:37a lot of work to be had there.
01:39I just feel
01:40it was a Celtic team
01:41that were that poor,
01:43especially defensively,
01:44that allowed Rangers
01:45those opportunities to score.
01:48Literally every single goal there
01:49was avoidable,
01:50really,
01:51when you look at it.
01:51If you want to really look at it,
01:53the throw-ins,
01:54the defensive mistakes.
01:56Goal-keeping.
01:57Yeah,
01:58goal-keeping.
01:59I mean,
02:00these are all avoidable.
02:02And I'm listening to everything
02:03and what's being said
02:04and the highlights,
02:05and those little situations,
02:08tactics aren't,
02:09it's right,
02:10it's not massive,
02:11it's individual errors,
02:12communication,
02:13all these things
02:14have to be better.
02:14But,
02:16I mean,
02:16Celtic,
02:17in those eight games,
02:19non-existent defensively.
02:21And anybody can see that.
02:23Anybody sitting
02:24and watching that
02:25can look,
02:26if we can get in behind them here,
02:27we're going to get opportunities
02:28to score.
02:29So,
02:30crazy game.
02:31See,
02:31when you talk about tactics,
02:33right,
02:33and it's not influenced
02:36by tactics,
02:38I'm not saying
02:40it's tactical,
02:41but it's structural,
02:42right?
02:42And I've heard other people
02:43talking about how
02:44the system was not
02:45nothing to play
02:46or not important.
02:49It didn't influence
02:49the goals that were conceded.
02:52And I've got to say,
02:53to me,
02:53that is absolute nonsense
02:55of the highest degree
02:57because,
02:58right?
02:59And I've seen,
02:59again,
03:01I'm getting to the stage
03:01where I see so many
03:02pseudo-football intellects
03:04like,
03:05you know,
03:05pontificating about,
03:06oh yeah,
03:07move this guy here
03:08and he's there
03:08and this is what
03:09Wilfred Nancey's going to do.
03:10And you're like,
03:11look,
03:12mistakes are made.
03:13See individual mistakes.
03:15Why are individual mistakes
03:16being made
03:17by people
03:18that two months ago
03:19weren't making
03:20these individual mistakes?
03:22They're confused.
03:23That is exactly
03:25because
03:25you've implemented
03:27a system
03:28and a tactical structure
03:29that is leaving
03:30these players
03:31stressed,
03:32uncomfortable
03:33and in those scenarios
03:35they're making
03:36the wrong decisions.
03:37So,
03:38you can call it
03:39directly
03:40or indirectly
03:41that tactical structure
03:43is causing problems,
03:46self-inflicted problems
03:47and the,
03:48you know,
03:49Cermity's second goal
03:50is a perfect example.
03:52You can talk about
03:53and pause it
03:53at any point
03:54and say,
03:54Austin trust
03:55he needs to slide across
03:56and yes he does
03:57but
03:58two things
04:00on this.
04:02You've got
04:03a back three in place
04:04and the right side
04:05is centre half
04:05of Celtic
04:07Tony Ralston's
04:08taking the throne
04:09and a normal
04:10back four
04:11Ralston's a right back
04:13taking that throne
04:14so you've got
04:15two centre halves
04:16who are behind them
04:18and you can have
04:19Kieran Tierney
04:20who's a bit more
04:21out on the left hand side
04:23ready to break forward.
04:24He's doing that
04:25in a back three
04:27so the gaps
04:28between him
04:28and Trusty
04:29are already
04:29too big
04:30and when Trusty
04:31He doesn't have to
04:32take the throne
04:32it's simple communication
04:34and when the ball
04:35gets
04:35and when the ball
04:36gets broken
04:37down the line
04:38and Cermitti's
04:39running through
04:40all Trusty needs to do
04:41is slide across
04:42he does
04:42but because of
04:43the confusion
04:44within the system
04:45and because Celtic
04:46are already
04:46a man down
04:47defensively
04:48he's reluctant
04:50to slide across
04:51because he doesn't know
04:53and he should be
04:53checking yes
04:54but again
04:55this comes back
04:56to the nonsense
04:56of the system
04:57he's unsure
04:59about shuffling across
05:00so these mistakes
05:02But you don't think
05:02as a player
05:03you know that
05:04Mikey
05:04that's how I get
05:05frustrated
05:05I'm like you
05:07I'm hearing everybody
05:08speak about all this
05:09stuff and a lot
05:10of it I do
05:10feels nonsense
05:11but see when you've
05:12played the game
05:13long enough
05:13you understand
05:14yourself
05:15even if that was
05:16me taking that
05:17throw in
05:17and people are
05:18talking about
05:18McGregor
05:19and this and that
05:19just speak
05:20go away
05:20move away
05:22or Trusty
05:23come over one
05:24you come
05:24as a player
05:26who's played the game
05:27and you understand
05:27you know
05:28I'm not going
05:29to throw you
05:30the ball
05:30when you're a yard
05:31away from me
05:32and there's a guy
05:33on you
05:33and there's a guy
05:33on me
05:34I'd rather just
05:35throw it down the line
05:36I just think
05:37they are confused
05:39they look confused
05:40defensively
05:41they look as if
05:41they haven't been
05:42taught what they want
05:43from the goalkeeper
05:45playing out from the back
05:46they don't know
05:47what they're doing
05:48what's their patterns
05:49look at Motherwell
05:50as a prime example
05:51that's a team
05:52that is well coached
05:53they know exactly
05:54what they're doing
05:55whoever gets in the ball
05:56where their next pass is
05:57where to be
05:58movement the whole
05:59nine yards
06:00where it just looks lost
06:01guys Mikey
06:02time's ticking on here
06:03right we need to keep
06:04on moving forward
06:05just a couple of things then
