00:00As central administration for the protection of the national economy, East Germany's first
00:10secret police is established in 1949. In 1950, it is transformed into the Ministry for State
00:21Security, commonly known as Stasi. No spies were found here at all. Instead, only politically
00:28undesirable East German citizens were being scrutinized the entire time.
00:3215 district administrations and over 200 local offices blanket the whole country. This focus
00:43on monitoring its own people requires a massive expansion of the Stasi. By the 1980s, the Stasi
00:52has over 90,000 full-time personnel. In the late 70s and early 80s, it was primarily former
00:58Secret Service employees, especially Stasi personnel, who were condemned to death here in Leipzig.
01:04The Stasi files still hold much that waits to be discovered.
