00:00Amanda, just given portions of your remarks, sir, and we appreciate you taking questions very much.
00:06Maggie Vespa from NBC News.
00:07We have reported multiple times in-depth quoting DHS's statements saying that Liam Ramos is being held with his father in Texas.
00:16With that context in mind, we still have people saying that they're outraged at the idea of little kids being held in custody at all.
00:24So what do you say to those people, and what kinds of conditions are young children being held in?
00:31As far as that family has not been separated.
00:36So it goes back.
00:37We reported that.
00:38Yes.
00:38So even with that in mind, he's in custody, being detained in Texas with his dad.
00:42Yes, with his dad.
00:43So that goes back to exactly what I just said is many American citizens are separated when they're arrested,
00:51say, by Minneapolis Police Department or any other police department.
00:54They are separated from their children when they're arrested.
00:58So take a look at what's happening here with this particular case.
01:02They're not being separated.
01:03That child is in the least restrictive setting possible.
01:06When I say that we're experts, both Border Patrol and ICE, in dealing with immigration cases that involve children,
01:14probably the most experienced anywhere in the United States by any domestic law enforcement agency,
01:20I know that in my particular Border Patrol sector that saw thousands of individuals coming across the border during that last demonstration,
01:30including hundreds of children, I remember our agents in the back parking lot playing soccer matches with those children in the back parking lot.
01:39I challenge any other law enforcement agency anywhere nationwide to show me the fantastic care that ICE and U.S. Border Patrol provide children.
01:48Don't come across the border illegally, especially don't commit crimes or there will be consequences.
01:56And American citizens face it.
01:59So, you know, the law is fair and firm.
02:04If I may follow up, you said he's with his family.
02:07Another way of looking at that might be that we don't imprison or detain American children,
02:14penalizing them for the actions of their parents.
02:16So what do you say to those who are troubled by the contrast?
02:18They see a child in custody.
02:20American kids don't ignore that.
02:22Well, I don't think there's a contrast.
02:24And the child could be without his parents somewhere, perhaps in social services care somewhere.
02:30And that's what we see oftentimes by children that are trafficked across the border.
02:36It's heartbreaking.
02:37They're not with any family.
02:38They're with social services or Office of Refugee and Resettlement.
02:44So the child is in the least restrictive setting with a family member.
02:47I don't think it gets any better than that.
02:50And as far as the care, the best care that I've seen is ICE, U.S. Border Patrol,
02:56and the way we treat those illegal aliens that come across the border.
03:00I don't think you have any details as to what that is.
03:02I don't think you have any details as to what that is.
