00:19and also for the consolidation of regional unity in the face of imperialism.
00:24In Peru, various sectors are calling for the resignation of interim president Jose Gedi
00:33less than four months after taking office on suspicion of influence peddling,
00:39illegal sponsorship of interests and lack of transparency.
00:47And Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas
00:52during his official visit to Moscow to discuss issues of bilateral interests.
01:01Hello and welcome to From the South.
01:03My name is Belen de los Santos and from Eterso Studios in Havana, Cuba, we begin with the news.
01:08Venezuela's acting president Elsie Rodriguez called for advances in political coexistence
01:26and also for the consolidation of regional unity in the face of imperialism.
01:31During the first annual session of the Federal Government Council, acting president Elsie Rodriguez
01:37reported having held a conversation with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel where they exchanged
01:43condolences for the casualties caused by the U.S. aggression of January 3rd.
01:49In turn, Rodriguez reiterated that diplomatic dialogue with Washington is continuing to address
01:55the most sensitive differences, an action that she framed in the context of Bolivar's legacy
02:03in the face of Monroism.
02:06In addition, she mentioned upcoming announcements on policies of coexistence and tolerance
02:12and reported that by 2026, the country project a 37% increase in foreign currency resources
02:22for public management.
02:34I say this with absolute responsibility and soon, in the next few hours, we will be making
02:40an announcement in this regard on how to deal with politics, how to deal with coexistence,
02:52how we are going to face up to tolerance without hatred, without violence, to diversity and differences
02:59in opinion.
03:00But respect must prevail and the right to tolerance must prevail.
03:05It is a human right, and that is why we legislate against hatred and intolerance, because we
03:13know that it can lead to a human being being burned in a square because of the color of their
03:21skin or the partisan position.
03:24And the acting president of Venezuela, Delce Rodriguez, announced that the first national popular
03:33consultation of 2026 will be held on March the 8th.
03:39I also wish to inform you that the first popular consultation of this year will be held on March 8th,
03:49Women's Day.
03:50Women's Day so that we may go forward in the spirit of our women, our warriors.
03:57Let's go to the popular consultation, and the projects will be aimed at choosing between
04:03transformation number one, which is economic transformation into productive projects, and
04:09transformation number two, which is the human city in infrastructure, works and services.
04:15You will be able to choose projects between these two transformations.
04:18I also want to announce that this month we will be carrying out the second ObratĂłn.
04:27Since October, we have delivered 20,800 works, and this month we will deliver 8,234 works
04:35that are ready for our people.
04:39And the process of releasing detainees in Venezuela continues into its second consecutive week.
04:47The Minister for the Interior, Justice and Peace Diosado Cabello, announced that another
04:51group of people had been benefited as part of the national reconciliation process.
04:57The ministerial office had insisted that this process, promoted by the Venezuelan executive,
05:03in collaboration with the judiciary and the moral authority for the review of cases,
05:08has the fundamental purpose of ensuring peace in Venezuela.
05:12In this scenario, on Thursday, Ukraine's foreign minister confirmed the release of three nationals
05:18and expressed his gratitude for the mediation of the United States and European partners.
05:24As part of this process, the family of the far-right former presidential candidate,
05:30Edmundo González, confirmed the release of his son-in-law, Rafael Tudárez,
05:35the only detainee for whom the extremist leadership had requested.
05:40Let's remember that President Donald Trump's special envoy to Venezuela, Richard Grenell,
05:44assured that many releases from prison were delayed since his first visit to the country in January of 2025,
05:52because the leader of the violent riots in Venezuela, Maria Corina Machado,
05:57had refused to submit a list of names.
06:07And Cuban President Miguel DĂaz-Canel addressed on Thursday his recent phone call
06:12with the Venezuelan acting president, Elcio RodrĂguez, through a post on his ex-account.
06:17DĂaz-Canel shared, I reiterated our strong condemnation of the military aggression by the United States
06:23and the kidnapping of constitutional president Nicolas Maduro and his wife Celia Flores.
06:29Moreover, the Cuban president stated, I expressed our support and solidarity with the homeland of Bolívar and Chávez,
06:35its people and the Bolivarian government, as well as our decision to continue strengthening our historic relations of brotherhood and cooperation.
06:48And this Thursday marks 20 days since the kidnapping of the constitutional president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,
07:08Nicolás Maduro Moros and First Lady and Deputy Celia Flores perpetrated on January 3rd by the U.S. government
07:15in an action that openly violated national sovereignty and international law.
07:21In Venezuela, the Bolivarian revolution continues to have strong popular support,
07:26with showcases being held around neighborhoods, communes and workplaces.
07:31Across the world, citizens, political organizations and international solidarity movements alike
07:37have raised their voices in defense of freedom, self-determination and the dignity of the Venezuelan people.
07:43The demand for the return of the legitimate leaders has become a cause for unity and resistance,
07:51a collective outcry against imperial aggression, interference and the systematic violation of the rules governing coexistence among nations.
08:02In every state of Venezuela, there are calls demanding the release of constitutional President Nicolás Maduro and his wife,
08:13First Lady and Deputy Celia Flores, after they were abducted by the United States through an illegal operation on Venezuelan soil.
08:22From Miranda State, our colleague Andrea Romero with the details.
08:25At Bolivar Square in Guarenas, the mobilization began with a forceful demonstration.
08:32Kidnapping is not justice, it is plunder.
08:35The demonstrators point to oil as the true objective of the U.S.
08:39It is plunder.
08:40The demonstrators point to oil as the true objective of the United States.
08:46Honestly, we know why the kidnapping happened.
08:51The kidnapping is about oil.
08:53The oil belongs to the Venezuelans, Mr. Trump.
08:56At this moment, we Afro-descendants, the indigenous peoples, the Wahyu people, the indigenous Gwache Porro, Black Philippe.
09:05We are now in the streets.
09:06Our spirits, our ancestors are here, demanding that you return our president.
09:12The people of Miranda reaffirm that resistance is both spiritual and political.
09:21The call for peace becomes the driving force of the march.
09:24It's for the Patria. It's for the peace. Venezuela needs Nicolás. It's for the Patria. It's for the peace.
09:37I made cultural performance, symbolizing Venezuelan roots and bonnets, displaying images of the presidential couple.
09:50The grassroots sends messages to the president, the first lady, and also to the United States.
09:56Cecilia Flores and Nicolás Maduro, have strength, for here is an angry people waiting for you to return to Venezuela.
10:04And I tell Trump to respect the Venezuelan people, because on Venezuelan soil we are ready to do anything for our homeland, because this is our land.
10:11In the main streets of Guarenas, a human wave move, aware of the rupture of international order caused by the fateful attack of January 3rd,
10:24who are affirming their support for the continuation of the revolution in the country.
10:28Our constitutional rights have been violated. We have a president who is a prisoner of war.
10:36We also want to tell acting President Delce Rodriguez that we are here, standing firm, to continue fighting for Venezuelans and to achieve the release of our president, Nicolas Maduro.
10:47The people of Guarenas are in the streets in support. We want the president back.
10:51For Venezuelan, loyalty is a daily commitment, and in the states of Miranda as throughout the country, the mobilizations continue until the president returns.
11:04President, here you have your people, supporting you more every day since that January 3rd when you were kidnapped. Here we are in solidarity. Here you have your people of Guarenas, always combative and committed to the revolution, and to you, my president. We want you back in Venezuela.
11:23Guarenas didn't march just for a leader, but for Venezuela's right to decide its own destiny without foreign interference.
11:32From Miranda, in the camera of Marcos da Silva for Telesur, Andrea Romero.
11:39Now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English where you will find news in different formats, news updates and much more. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
11:49We continue, and from the south, Colombia has described Ecuador's recently imposed 30% tariff as an economic aggression, describing it as a punishment for an alleged liability.
12:18For an alleged lack of security cooperation. The president of Ecuador, Daniel Novoa, has imposed a 30% tariff on Colombia, which, according to Novoa, will remain in place until there is a quote-unquote real commitment from Bogotá to combat drug trafficking at the border.
12:35In this regard, Colombian President Gustavo Petro highlighted that more than 200 tons of cocaine have been seized at the border, in addition to hundreds of operations by sea, air and land.
12:48Petro also assured that they will respond according to the principles of reciprocity.
12:54Meanwhile, the president of the Foreign Trade Association has urged both governments to engage in dialogue and reach a consensus.
13:05Colombia has a commercial partner in Ecuador, particularly for its manufactured goods and electric power.
13:18To think that we are entering a tariff retaliation war, I believe, is not convenient, I repeat, for either of the two countries.
13:26The call, therefore, is for the authorities of both countries to engage in dialogue.
13:31And in Peru, various sectors are calling for the resignation of interim President José Geri, less than four months after taking office on suspicion of influence peddling, illegal sponsorship of interests and lack of transparency.
13:47The controversy began after evidence was revealed of private meetings not recorded in the official agenda with a Chinese businessman in this regard.
13:56The prosecutor's office has opened a preliminary investigation into alleged influence peddling and illegal sponsorship of interest.
14:03The unofficial meetings of the interim president also compromise him with a businessman linked to illegal logging.
14:11In this context, the so-called Generation Z has called for protests to demand his removal, despite the fact that on Wednesday, the head of state dismissed the seriousness of these allegations in a meeting with the press.
14:24And we go now to Honduras, because on Wednesday, the National Electoral Council of the Nation, the CNE, presented the presidential credentials to Nasri Asfura, considered by much of the population to be at a facto precedent imposed by the interests of the United States and drug traffickers.
14:48Despite denunciations being made about the transparency of the elections results, the elections of November 30th of last year, the CNE ratified the controversial victory of the now-elected president.
15:02The exclusion of the media during the delivery of the document has fueled allegations about the legitimacy of this new term, which will follow the government of Xiomara Castro.
15:15On January 27th, with a divided Congress and a majority of municipalities under the control of the right-wing National Party, the country is preparing for a transition marked by popular rejection and foreign interference.
15:32And in the United States, a new poll reveals that a growing majority of citizens believe the country is out of control under President Donald Trump's leadership.
15:44The latest YouGov Economist survey conducted between January 16th and 19th shows that 71% of the people that were surveyed think that the United States is out of control under Trump,
15:58while only 18% think that the country is out of control, while only 18% think that the country is under control.
16:03The survey showed that this view spans most demographic groups, about 70% of white respondents, 79% of black respondents, and 70% of Hispanic respondents as well,
16:16said that the country was, quote-unquote, out of control.
16:20Also, similar views were recorded across age groups, including 70% of those aged 18 to 29 and 74% of those 65 and older.
16:32The findings were also notable among Republicans, with half saying that the country is under control.
16:39By contrast, 38% said the contrary, and 12% said that they were unsure.

17:10Final short break, don't go away.
17:20We continue, and from the South, we have more information.
17:34On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump launched the Board of Peace on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
17:43This is a new international structure that was presented as a mechanism supposedly to promote stability and ensure peace in areas affected by armed conflicts.
17:54The official White House statement regarding the creation of the Board of Peace links it to Trump's comprehensive plan for a ceasefire and the reconstruction of Gaza.
18:06However, the organization's statute does not limit its activities to Palestinian territory.
18:11The U.S. head of state presides over the board, defines its memberships, and has broad powers to veto decisions and remove members.
18:21In a geopolitical scenario of U.S. imperialism, Trump suggested that this Board of Peace could eventually assume the functions of the United Nations
18:30or render the world institution obsolete.
18:36And let's take a closer look at the structure of the Board of Peace that will be chaired by U.S. President Donald Trump.
18:46Membership is limited to states invited by the chairman in the sense member states are represented by heads of state or senior government officials
18:54and must contribute to operations in line with their domestic laws.
18:58While general membership terms last three years,
19:02this limit does not apply to states contributing more than $1 billion in the first year, which would grant them a permanent seat.
19:11Members of the executive board include former United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair,
19:17U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
19:21And on Thursday, Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Heili Feng made one of the most important announcements at the Davos Forum in Switzerland,
19:36speaking of his country's determination to become the world market.
19:41The Deputy Prime Minister assured that boosting domestic demand is a priority on the economic agenda,
19:48as reflected in Section 15 of the Chinese government five-year plan.
19:54In this way, Beijing has made it clear that its plan is to replace the United States as the world's main consumer market.
20:01In this context, the Deputy Prime Minister also reaffirmed China's commitment to trade and investment
20:07as strategies for promoting global development.
20:16And on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas
20:22during his official visit to Moscow to discuss issues of bilateral interest.
20:28During the meeting, the leaders discussed economic, commercial, cultural and humanitarian development,
20:33as well as the situation in the Middle East and the Gaza Strip in particular.
20:39Russian Head of State Vladimir Putin emphasized his willingness to allocate at least $1 billion from funds blocked by the White House
20:47to U.S. President Donald Trump's Peace Council for the Reconstruction of the Palestinian Enclave.
20:55In this scenario, Putin also highlighted that trade between Russia and Palestine continues to grow every day.
21:03Russian President Donald Trump's Peace Council for the Reconstruction of the U.S. President Donald Trump's Peace Council for the Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
21:10You have already heard that we are prepared to allocate $1 billion to this new structure,
21:15the Peace Council, primarily to support the Palestinian people and to use this fund for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip,
21:22and more broadly, for resolving the Palestinian province.
21:25As I've already said, with the assets frozen in the United States under the previous administration,
21:31I think this is entirely possible.
21:33We've discussed such options previously with the representative of the U.S. administration,
21:38and a meeting and discussion on this topic is planned in Moscow today.
21:42And in this context, the Palestinian president also highlighted the resilience of his people amid the ongoing Israeli aggression.
21:55Mr. President, we suffer a lot within the Palestinian land.
22:06You know this very well.
22:09During the Israeli occupation, which carried out a great deal of destruction in the Gaza Strip,
22:19as well as in the West Bank of Jerusalem.
22:22The Palestinian people insisted that they would not leave their country, no matter the cost.
22:31The people of Gaza are now living in tents.
22:35These tents are subject to rain, destruction, and flooding.
22:40Yet, people are determined to remain in their land.
22:46We will not leave it.
22:47What we want is peace.
22:52And in other news, on Thursday in Japan, the Kashigasa-Wikariwa nuclear power plant,
22:59the largest in the world, was shut down by the Tokyo electric power company TEPCO,
23:05after an alarm was triggered in the monitoring system of reactor No. 6, one day after its reactivation.
23:12The alert occurred during the removal of the reactor's control routes,
23:16which are essential for regulating its power and ensuring its safety.
23:20Although TEPCO tried to solve the problem by replacing electrical components,
23:25the situation reportedly persists and an investigation has been launched.
23:30In this regard, the company assured that the plant is in stable condition
23:34and does not pose a radiation risk to the outside world.
23:37The Kashigasa-Wikariwa nuclear power plant was meant to make its return to operation
23:43after 15 years spent at all after the Fukushima disaster
23:48prompted a nationwide shutdown on 2011.
23:57And with this information, we have come to the end of this news brief.
