00:00Online gambling is booming worldwide. Recent assessments estimate the global
00:05market to be in the 100 billion dollar range. That's comparable to the GDP of
00:10countries like Costa Rica or Luxembourg. It is a huge and growing market and
00:15that's not necessarily good. Fast game cycles, nudges in the app and 24-7 access
00:20can push people to keep betting and lose more than they plan. In some cases
00:25everything. So why is online gambling so addictive and so dangerous? And what can
00:32be done to rein in the problem? Let's start with one aspect of the whole thing.
00:36Betting a few bucks on your favorite team can seem harmless, but sports betting
00:41apps aren't old betting shops gone digital. Beware, they are carefully
00:45engineered systems designed to be addictive so that people keep spending
00:50money. One tap and you're on. And instantly you're exposed to elaborate
00:54manipulation mechanisms. The betting options are endless and often very
00:59complicated. Intentionally so. Then there are mechanisms that create time
01:04pressure. Live betting is possible up to very late in a game and the developers
01:09use all the tricks in the book. Odds flashing, timers counting down the seconds,
01:14you're pushed to decide right there and then. In case you consider yourself an
01:18expert, apps will exploit that too. You get shown stats, also expert picks and
01:24personalized tips. Betting might feel like a skill, but the house always wins.
01:29Remember the industry's revenue last year? Most of that is the money gamblers lost.
01:35When you lose, apps don't tell you to stop. They offer bonuses or free bets instead.
01:40Wins are celebrated with flashy animations. Losses are barely noticeable. Bottom line,
01:46nothing here is accidental. It's all by design and it's powerful. These apps
01:51don't just let people gamble. They push them to always bet more without thinking
01:57twice. The same is true for online casino style gambling. Casino style apps use the
02:03tricks of sports betting and take them to the next level. Here there is no half
02:07time and no next real life match. Just the next spin or the next hand. Basically all the
02:14time on your phone. What's more, most slots, roulette, blackjack and poker apps use in-app
02:21tokens or credits instead of direct cash bets. The desired effect? Players often treat
02:27these virtual currencies as play money, even when they were purchased with real money.
02:32This reduces loss awareness and can make people gamble more impulsively. And even worse,
02:38algorithms analyze player behavior in real time and use it to identify high risk or high spending
02:45users. They track data like gaming frequency, time of day, losses and session length. And then
02:51tailor bonuses or promotions to keep users engaged. This can become a trap, especially for people with
02:58a predisposition to addiction. The WHO estimates more than 1% of adults worldwide have a gambling
03:05disorder. People gambling at harmful levels generate around 60% of total gambling losses
03:11and are especially targeted by many casino apps. The mechanisms have been known for a while. Why
03:17hasn't more been done to rein them in? Online gambling and betting apps are very hard for
03:22governments to control. Many of them operate across borders, move money fast and hide behind complex
03:29tech. A lot of them use cryptocurrencies. They very often simply ignore local consumer protection
03:35laws. So why not simply ban them all together? If they are known to be addictive and harmful by
03:40design? Well, many governments make a lot of money from legal gambling. Yeah, through taxes or licensing
03:48fees. So they are more inclined to allow these apps, even though online gambling is widely regarded as
03:54a growing mental health issue. Worldwide, we see different initiatives to tackle the problem, though.
03:59Brazil has introduced mandatory face biometric verification for users of online gambling platforms
04:05to make sure only adults sign up. India has reportedly blocked nearly 8,000 illegal betting and gambling sites
04:13since a new law came into effect in 2025. And in Europe, there are initiatives for cooperation and data
04:20sharing between countries to help tackle illegal or unlicensed online gambling more effectively.
04:26Nevertheless, if you want my advice online gambling, just don't do it. But if you do it, set limits for
04:33time and money. Check if your country offers blocking tools. And if gambling is causing stress or debt,
04:39reach out to a helpline in your country. Stay cautious. Bye for now.
