Trump considers 'tariff-free zone' for Ukraine as US envoy Witkoff hints peace deal is close

The US has held talks with Russia as well as with Ukraine and European partners on various drafts of a plan to end the war in Ukraine but so far a deal has remained elusive.

00:00Speaking at a breakfast meeting on the future of Ukraine, U.S. Envoy Steve Whitcoff said President Donald Trump is considering a tariff-free zone for the country.
00:11The breakfast meeting happened on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos in Switzerland, with panelists including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Finnish President Alexander Stub.
00:22The president has talked about a tariff-free zone from Ukraine that I think would be game-changing. You'll see industry move into that area in a huge way.

00:37Whitcoff said he was headed to Moscow later in the day before continuing his travels towards Abu Dhabi.
00:43Also speaking at the meeting, NATO Chief Mark Rutte praised Trump for his efforts to secure a peace deal in Ukraine.
00:49And he is pushing with Steve Whitcoff, with Jared Kushner, with Marco Rubio endlessly, of course with help from many European zones and power I see here and so many others in this room,
01:00working day in, day out to get the Ukraine issue solved, to get the war brought to an end, a sustainable end where Russia will never ever try to attack again.
01:09Rutte added that the EU plans to free up funds for Ukraine's defense, but said that those efforts wouldn't bear fruit immediately as Russia continues to launch attacks on Ukraine.
