00:00The presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates every six months
00:04with each member state setting the priorities for the EU agenda.
00:08The presidency plays a key role in driving the EU's legislative agenda
00:13and facilitating agreement between member states.
00:16In this context, the presidency also plays an important role
00:19in advancing our collective foreign policy objectives.
00:23The Cypriot presidency comes in a year which will be remarkable
00:26for EU-KUVEIT relations as we celebrate this year the 40th anniversary
00:31of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kuveit and the European Union.
00:37The EU-KUVEIT relations are developing in many sectors.
00:42We are also looking forward to engaging with Kuveit
00:44to negotiate a bilateral strategic partnership agreement
00:47which will further elevate our bilateral relations.
00:51Cyprus is taking over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union
00:56during the first six months of this year, from January till June 26.
01:01And the current Cypriot presidency is its second term
01:05following the first one back in 2012.
01:09It's a fact that Cyprus presidency will act as a responsible and honest broker
01:13in full respect of institutional propriety
01:17and in close cooperation with the European Parliament
01:20and the European Commission.
01:22We have to build on the work of our trio partners
01:24which in the case of Cyprus is started with Poland,
01:28continued with Denmark, Danish presidency
01:31and finishes with the Cyprus presidency,
01:34ensuring the continuity and coherence,
01:36adapting as necessary to geopolitical and geoeconomic developments.
