Transcript
00:00Hello there, welcome to your Wednesday evening weather update from the Met Office, which is wet outside and windy for many parts of the country.
00:09Let me take you through the bigger picture. We have low pressure sitting across towards the west there, slow moving weather fronts pushing ever northwards and eastwards.
00:18Here's that rain warning across Grampian as well as Tayside, Central and Fife and it remains in place until the end of Friday and that strong southeasterly wind delivering a lot of cloud, moisture and rain.
00:32And then we look towards the southwest as this system here will bring wet and windy conditions across the southwestern quadrant of the country through Friday and into Saturday.
00:40So this picture tells it all really, a lot of cloud, outbreaks of rain, persistent rain across central and northern areas of Scotland with that driving southeast wind.
00:50Showery bursts further west and south, perhaps some drier interludes in between, still a lot of cloud and what that means for most temperatures will hold up.
01:00So not a particularly cold end to the night with a canopy of cloud and that wind mixing things up.
01:06Even so, a fairly unpleasant start to the day if you are out and about.
01:11So that's the low pressure. This is the warning zone. Let's just zoom in here so we can see some detail.
01:17In excess of 100 millimetres of rain are likely particularly over higher ground.
01:21So some high rainfall totals over a prolonged period of time and then eventually the air becomes colder.
01:26So from Thursday night and into Friday above around 400 metres we're expecting that rain to turn to snow.
01:33Through Thursday morning you can see where the persistent rain is covering most of Scotland, England and Wales.
01:39For Northern Ireland, the west country, central and southern England, you'll see a lot of showers and they'll be slow moving.
01:45Through the day that wind will also be a feature of the weather, pushing through the North Channel to western Scotland and the rest of Scotland,
01:52particularly exposed to the southeasterly wind across more northern and eastern areas.
01:55The east coast also seeing a strong wind and outbreaks of rain. So yet again, not a great day to be out about or even travelling.
02:03Through Thursday evening that rain turns to snow, especially over the hills and mountains of the north.
02:08We could see a clearance coming in for a time across England and Wales as this system pushes northwards.
02:13But then, hot on its heels, another area of cloud and rain.
02:17And that brings some wet and windy weather across Wales, central and southern England as well as the west country into Friday morning.
02:24Again, some tricky driving conditions if you're out and about through Friday.
02:28As the rain extends very slowly towards northern England, Northern Ireland,
02:32we continue to see some sporadic bursts across central and eastern northern areas of Scotland with that wintryness over the higher ground.
02:39And that sets the scene for the weekend, unsettled and colder in the southwest, remaining wet and windy with the risk of gales
02:46and also the chance of wintry showers in the north.
02:49Stay up to date with the warnings. This week, this today, it is the 10-day trend.
02:54So check that out on YouTube and I'll see you again soon.
