00:01January can feel long and gloomy. Many notice their mood dip after the festive season, but there are plenty ways to lift your spirits from getting active in the city's parks to exploring Liverpool's museums and galleries. Health professionals say some more changes can make a real difference and local initiatives are helping residents stay connected and supported.
00:21I think you've got to look at it glass half full, haven't you? In some ways, I think probably the third Monday in January is less miserable in a way than the third Monday in November when people are probably stressed out about Christmas coming and the cost.
00:38I go to a lot of lunch clubs. They are, you know, I mean, the people I've met at lunch clubs, they're really, really, you know, marvellous people, genuine people.
00:53Best to join a choir or other stuff like that, like groups to get through January.
01:05The start of the year can be challenging with shorter days, colder weather and the end of the festive season. Experts say this can contribute to low mood, sometimes called the January blues, but there are practical ways to improve well-being.
01:21Exercise is one of the most effective tools. Liverpool's plenty of outdoor spaces from Sefton Park to the waterfront where residents can walk, cycle or jog.
01:29The NHS highlights that even 20 to 30 minutes of moderate activity each day can boost energy and mood. Local leisure centres also offer indoor options for those colder days.
01:41As long as you physically can and understand some people can't, if you can physically just move, exercise, it releases endorphins.
01:49Engaging with culture is another way to lift spirits. The city's museums, galleries and theatres, including the Walker Art Gallery and the Everyman Theatre, provide experiences that can spark joy and inspiration.
02:02Liverpool Libraries also run reading groups and workshops designed to help residents stay mentally engaged during the winter months.
02:09I think museums have an awful lot. The one with the brown streets.
02:14Self-care routines like maintaining regular sleep patterns, eating well and limiting alcohol are recommended by mental health organisations, including MIND.
02:24Experts say small changes, such as taking a lunchtime walk or scheduling a weekly catch-up with friends, can make a noticeable difference.
02:32You can have nice walks around town and you're not far from being in the open fields as well.
02:38Whilst the January blues are common, Liverpool offers a wide range of resources and opportunities to help residents feel supported and energised.
02:52Taking advantage of these can turn the bleakest month into a fresh start for body and mind.
