00:00Welcome to Atlanta, where the Celtics play their third of a four-game roadie.
00:06Anthony Simons torch the heat for 39 Thursday in Miami.
00:10Jalen Brown had his high school jersey retired yesterday, now signing his own Celtics jersey.
00:15He's not the only star named Jalen on the floor tonight.
00:18Celtics and Hawks coming at you.
00:23Got it!
00:30And welcome to State Farm Arena.
00:38It's the first of four meetings between the Celtics and Hawks this season.
00:42The seeds have dropped four of the last five in this series.
00:45Can't wait to watch you with me alongside Brian Scalabrini and Kayla Burton.
00:48I'm Drew Carter, and Scal the Hawks just dealt Trae Young.
00:51They've got a new face of the franchise.
00:53Yeah, and his name is Jalen Johnson, and he's a versatile forward.
00:56The guy can do it all.
00:58Excellent passer, you see.
00:598.1 assist.
01:00He gets everyone involved.
01:02You see guys coming off.
01:03Cut.
01:03He plays the point of attack.
01:05He can go inside.
01:07He can drive the ball.
01:08He's excellent in transition.
01:09Hawks decided to trade their franchise for this guy, so he should be very exciting.
01:14And speaking of exciting, Inferno was in full effect.
01:17The Celtics, they were flat.
01:18No spark.
01:19Where were they going to get the energy?
01:20The fourth quarter starts, and Anthony Simon goes off.
01:25Getting to the basket.
01:26The three ball.
01:27And then even when the Miami Heat play good defense, there's no stopping the Inferno.
01:32They might need that tonight against the Hawks.
01:33Celtics basketball on NBC Sports Boston is brought to you in part by TD Bank, Bank of the Boston Celtics, member FDIC, TD Bank, N.A.
01:44Buy Toyota's official website for deals, buyatoyota.com.
01:48Buy Arbella Insurance, here for New England, here for good.
01:52Buy South Coast Health, providing exceptional care from people who care.
01:56South Coast Health, advanced medicine, more care.
01:59Buy your New England, Boston Celtics.
02:02All right, Joe, obviously, Hanferny Simons in Miami goes off, has 39 points.
02:05It's a Celtics record for points off the bench on the road.
02:08When he's got it going like that, are you just hands off, or you still run all your normal sets, or you just let him go?
02:13I mean, you obviously want to put him in position to be successful, whether it's to play against the right coverage or play against the right matchup.
02:19But obviously, a lot of it just has to do with who he is as a player.
02:23It's something that he's done his entire career.
02:24And so, it's a credit to him being able to do that in a different role.
02:28And it obviously wasn't just him the other night.
02:29You guys had 31 second chance points against a team that plays the fastest in the NBA.
02:33You're playing another high-tempo team tonight in Atlanta.
02:36How do you balance that crashing versus getting back?
02:38I mean, crashing is the beginning of getting back, and so they're connected.
02:41You know, you have to be able to crash in order to have great transition defense.
02:45You have to be able to get guys out of the corner.
02:46You have to get five guys behind the line of the ball.
02:48You have to be able to get second-chance points.
02:50You have to be able to get offensive rebounds.
02:51So, they're not their own entity.
02:53They're connected.
02:54Crashing, transition, defense are one and the same.
02:55Last thing with Atlanta, you're seeing them for the first time this year.
02:58You've played some close games against them the last couple of years.
03:00What kind of challenges do they provide?
03:01Yeah, I mean, they're obviously a high-transition team, and they look to get the first shot.
03:06So, they do a great job of getting out and running and getting a first shot.
03:08Their spacing is great.
03:09They're five out.
03:10And they've got guys that can create off the dribble and force you into one-on-two.
03:13So, we've got to be great crashing.
03:15We've got to be great in our transition defense.
03:17We've got to be great in our individual defense so we don't get in two-on-ones.
03:20We've got to have great closeouts.
03:21We've got to protect the paint.
03:22We've got to rebound.
03:23All right.
03:23Good luck.
03:23Thank you, Joe.
03:24Thanks.
03:24Well, coming up, we just saw Anthony Simons go nuts in his home state of Florida.
03:28Had 39 against the Heat on Thursday.
03:30Now, Jalen Brown trying to do the same in his home state of Georgia.
03:33Tip-off next.
03:34I always say, I make a couple.
03:40You know what I mean?
03:41It's home.
03:41Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
03:44Anthony Simons.
03:45Oh, man.
03:47Chopping him up, driving.
03:49Scores again.
03:50You can't cool down the Inferno.
03:52Be able to come back against a team like that and get a big win.
03:56Let us know that we can do it each and every night.
03:58We've got to start off playing the right way, start off playing like we want it.
04:09It's on.
04:12Yes, it is.
04:13I've used that line before.
04:14It's on.
04:15He stole it from you.
04:16Starting lineups are brought to you by Jordan's Furniture.
04:19Update your home with 15% off all furniture and mattresses going on for a limited time.
04:24No Peyton Pritchard.
04:25So Baylor Shireman slides into the starting five for the Celtics.
04:29For the Hawks, C.J. McCullough makes his first start here in Atlanta.
04:32Played three games all off the bench, and he's been really good since the trade from D.C.
04:37Key matchup is presented by Subaru of New England.
04:39Fall in love with a brand new all-wheel drive Subaru.
04:41Two faces of the franchise.
04:44You might not know one of them.
04:45Jalen Johnson has had an excellent season.
04:47Look at his assist number.
04:488.1.
04:50Look at the rebounding.
04:51He is a walking triple-double threat.
04:53And then Jalen Brown, jersey retired.
04:56He's back home.
04:57We expect a big-time show from J.B. today.
05:00It's going to be a great matchup.
05:02A busy weekend for J.B.
05:04He was at his high school in Marietta yesterday.
05:06Now playing in front of his hometown tonight.
05:11Amish Keda and Onyeka Okonwu for the opening tap.
05:14And the Celtics control it wearing their City Edition uniforms again.
05:18Mark Lindsay's our crew chief.
05:19Fennessey Ransom, the Atlanta native, along with Brandon Adair.
05:23Those are our officials tonight.
05:25Here is that matchup.
05:26Jalen on Jalen.
05:27Good one to start.
05:29Fade away off the front of the rim for Jalen Brown.
05:31Has not been shooting the mid-range jumper as well as he did at the start of the year.
05:36Still near the top of the league and makes on the season about 45%.
05:40Hawks coming off a four-game West Coast road trip.
05:44They've played 25 games on the road.
05:48And the fewest amount of home games in the Eastern Conference.
05:50Even better on the road than in this building.
05:53C.J. McCollum playing his first home game as a Hawk.
05:55You wonder the dynamic that he's going to bring.
05:59He was excellent for the Wizards right when they traded him.
06:02He's won some games for them.
06:04They're looking for him to do the same thing with his Hawks team.
06:08There's Brown again trying to kick it out.
06:10Threw it to the sideline.
06:13It'll be Hawks ball.
06:14Well, someone's got to be in that window.
06:16Check the health report by South Coast Health.
06:18Providing exceptional care from people who care.
06:21It's a long one.
06:22Peyton Pritchard missing his first game of the season for the Celtics.
06:24Her old friend Kristaps Porzingis missing his fifth in a row
06:27with an Achilles tendonitis issue.
06:30Kayla's going to have an update on that later on in the show.
06:33Johnson missed the three.
06:34Here's Shireman off the rebound.
06:38Brown, and that slot drive hasn't knocked out of bounds.
06:41It'll stay here.
06:44Celtics at 25-15, which means this is game 41.
06:48Represents the halfway point of the season.
06:50What a year it's been.
06:51Celtics were second in the East, still ahead of the Knicks,
06:54and second in the entire NBA in net rating.
06:58Shireman, the no-dip three.
07:00It's good.
07:01How about that to start the scoring?
07:02Got to love that.
07:03He didn't have any space to dip that ball.
07:08He and Sam Hauser both do that so well.
07:11Okongwu drives.
07:12Hauser the rebound.
07:15Hawks have won four of the last five in this matchup.
07:17The Celtics, last time they came to this building, beat them by 30.
07:24White trying to pocket pass.
07:25It was kicked by Okongwu.
07:2714 to shoot.
07:27All right, Baylor Shireman from the nice feed from Jalen Brown gets his body set underneath that ball.
07:35Make it a wrist.
07:37By the way, he told me the upside-down shaka that he does is a celebration.
07:41Jalen Brown started it.
07:42It's supposed to be a J for juice.
07:44Nice.
07:46What is the deal with Shireman stealing people's cellies?
07:49Stealing everybody's cellies.
07:50Well, he had to Jason Tatum last year when he would, you know, like, hold his wrist.
07:53Yeah, shotgun that wrist.
07:54Whoa.
07:56I thought he came up with that.
07:58Shireman's going to be called for the foul.
07:59Oh, he did and Tatum stole it?
08:01I doubt Tatum's stealing cellies from Shireman.
08:04No disrespect, but I'm just saying.
08:07We'll have to do some investigative journalism and find out who came up with that first.
08:17I don't know why he steals either.
08:18Why can't he come up with his own?
08:19He was a quarterback.
08:20Come up with your own cellies.
08:21Shireman?
08:22Yeah.
08:23Let's give him a touchdown.
08:26Oh, Brown stop and pop.
08:28Off the rim.
08:29Kato right there to clean it up.
08:31Kato continues to improve his rebounding as the season goes along.
08:35He went from a below average to an excellent rebounder.
08:40The Celtics, you see, for the season, about 18 second chance points a game, which is second in the league.
08:45They had 31 of them Thursday in Miami.
08:48Yeah.
08:49We're not winning without Anferno.
08:51We're not winning without the run.
08:52We're definitely not winning without those second chance points.
08:56McKeel Alexander-Walker feeds Okongwu.
08:58Three to shoot.
08:59McCollum will try it.
09:01Rattles out.
09:02Kato with another rebound all over the glass early.
09:06A lot more point guard responsibilities today for Derek White with no Pete Pritchard out there.
09:11Here is White off the handoff.
09:13Oh, wow.
09:14Oh, ridiculous passing.
09:15Jalen Brown just missed the shot.
09:18That might have been an early candidate for the FW web assist.
09:22White creates the steal.
09:23Tommy point for Derek White.
09:24He does it every game, it feels like.
09:27He gets one of those steals and a block.
09:29Brown floats and scores.
09:31Hard drive to the right.
09:32Found a gap.
09:33Getting to the left.
09:35Jalen Brown so good on that attack.
09:37Atlanta just one for five from the floor.
09:42McCollum's got the only two points.
09:45Okongwu.
09:46Fancy.
09:46Yeah, excellent move by Okongwu.
09:48USC guy.
09:49Your boy.
09:51Yeah, no one knew what kind of player he was going to be coming out of high school because
09:54he played with the Ball Brothers.
09:55They never passed him the ball.
09:58Tino Hills.
09:59You guys won a lot of games, but it was all about the Ball Brothers.
10:03Hauser left alone in the corner.
10:05Never a good idea for the defense.
10:07Quinn Snyder's got to talk this out.
10:09It's Sam Hauser, folks.
10:11I'm pretty sure he's making the scouting report.
10:13You might want to guard 30.
10:16Get a hand up.
10:17Timeout Hawks.
10:19Welcome back inside State Farm Arena.
10:21Celtics are leading early in this one, 10 to 4.
10:23Here's to the doers presented by Honeydew.
10:25Mocha Madness is always a fan fave.
10:28Another fan fave locally in this area.
10:31Jalen Brown, who paid a very special visit back to his roots here in Georgia.
10:35He was honored back at Wheeler High School in Marietta, where he and multiple students and
10:40teachers just bursted out in cheers as he got to see his number zero jersey retired.
10:46A very special moment for JB, a 2015 graduate.
10:50And I asked him, what was that moment like to go back home, to go see kids and students
10:55who were you back in 2015?
10:58Because it was so surreal, so incredible to see not only how far I personally come,
11:03but to see the place that shaped me.
11:05He said it was important for me to speak words of wisdom to these guys and gals, because
11:09going to a public school, everyone, is not that easy.
11:12He said, quote, sometimes the system is betting on half of those kids not to succeed.
11:16So he wanted to make sure he would encourage others to use his platform, use their platform
11:21and beat the odds.
11:22But just a surreal, amazing moment for both JB and his community.
11:27JB's a great guy to kind of center what your focus should be.
11:31You know, he's obviously a basketball player, but he's so much more than that.
11:34And he tries to always, when he communicates with people, to be more than just one thing.
11:40Yeah, he is a very well-rounded guy.
11:44There was a funny moment at that jersey retirement as Brown is stripped.
11:49Alexander Walker over white.
11:51That is not easy to do.
11:52But they were going to use a rope to unveil it with that banner, take the cover off, and
11:58the rope apparently snaps.
11:59So someone had to go up there and do it by hand.
12:01JB said, that's kind of my high school experience in a nutshell.
12:04Wasn't always smooth.
12:06But of course, ended with a correct result as Brown fights through contact and scores.
12:10I like Jalen Brown playing off two feet.
12:14I think it's one of his greatest strengths when he does get to the paint.
12:19There is Jalen Johnson probing.
12:21Shireman almost intercepted the pass.
12:23Now it's McCollum.
12:25Missed the shot.
12:26CJ McCollum, a guy who's averaged 20 points a game every season for the last 10 years.
12:31A full decade of doing that.
12:32Brown uses the off-arm, creates some space, and scores it.
12:37Love that fadeaway.
12:39It's not really fading away.
12:40It's kind of drifting left as he elevates.
12:43Six points for JB.
12:46He's three for five, three for six inside the arc, 0 for two from downtown.
12:52Jalen Johnson blocked by Houser.
12:55Sam Houser says, don't come in here.
12:58Now Shireman.
13:02Alexander Walker running the floor.
13:06Jalen Johnson averaging 23, 10, and 8, which puts him in some elite company.
13:11Alexander Walker hits a three.
13:14Well, Celtics in this game so far, I know it's a small sample size,
13:18it's six minutes into the first quarter,
13:20but they seem to be plugging gaps a lot better today than they have recently.
13:25Houser, a great find, but better defense from Jalen Johnson.
13:29Blocked the dunk attempt by Kata.
13:31Here is Johnson, hooks it outside.
13:34Alexander Walker gave it up this time, and White deflected it right to Okonwu,
13:38and he drops it home.
13:40Timeout, Joe Mazzula.
13:41Yeah, that's the second floater for Okonwu.
13:44Looks like my man's been working on his game.
13:47Three-point lead for the Celtics mid-first quarter.
13:50Timeout sees.
13:51A spot to watch a Celtics game with friends.
13:56Come hang with us in Corona at Jake and Joe's in Waltham on Saturday, January 23rd,
14:00for an epic Celtics watch party starting at 7.
14:03They'll have giveaways, tickets, and plenty of Celtics spirit to go around.
14:06It's all brought to you by Corona, the official cerveza of the Boston Celtics.
14:10All right, let's take a look at some of these plays from Jalen Brown.
14:14Just talking about him getting his jersey retired.
14:16Now he's getting downhill, playing off two feet.
14:19It's the ball away from the defense, lays it up.
14:22Here's the shot I really like, and I feel like he's improved this a ton this year.
14:26See that kind of drifting left?
14:27Just a sweet flick of the wrist as it shows off the touch.
14:31The ball drops.
14:32It was a good look from the dunk and cam.
14:34It's all about the dunk.
14:40Jimmy with six to lead the way for the Celtics.
14:44Does the Hawks supply a little light pressure?
14:46How about our two step-up guys check in at the same time?
14:50Yep, and Bernie Simons and Hugo Gonzalez, as well as Luka Garza,
14:54and Jordan Walsh all in there.
14:55Jalen Brown, the lone starter on the floor right now.
14:58Five seconds to shoot.
15:00McCollum picks him up.
15:01Jalen Brown, the big step back off the side of the backboard.
15:06Rebounded by Mohamed Gay, who's in the game for Okonwu.
15:12McCollum blocked.
15:14I think it was Brown.
15:15Garza providing the rim protection as well.
15:18JB on the move.
15:19Kick it out.
15:19Ugo Gonzalez.
15:22Garza nearly had the offensive rebound.
15:24One last touched by him.
15:28They might correct this.
15:30Yep.
15:31Brandon Adair comes over.
15:32Fantasy Ransom tells the Celtics bench.
15:34Simmer down, and it is Celtics ball.
15:37Sam Cassell was up in arms about that one.
15:40Yeah, Garza, as soon as that shot, forget that,
15:42as soon as the pass was made out to Ugo,
15:45Garza started working for offensive rebound position.
15:48Again, it's Jalen on Jalen.
15:56Johnson defends Brown.
15:58Around the Garza screen, mid-range again, and this one's good.
16:01That's going to be another screen assist from Luka Garza.
16:04Good job getting Jalen Brown free.
16:06If you're looking at screen assist per 36 minutes,
16:09Luka Garza, best in the NBA in that category.
16:12We call him the king of the screen.
16:14I can get down with that.
16:18I prefer Garzilla, but it's a secondary choice.
16:22It's not bad.
16:24King of the screen.
16:25There it is again.
16:27Look at that.
16:27Yep, Walsh.
16:28Make a playoff.
16:29Oh, it rattles out.
16:30He almost had a regular assist.
16:33Walsh just missed the three.
16:36Celtics going to that bench unit early.
16:38They've been so impactful really over the last few weeks.
16:43McCollum into Walsh, got the contact, not the basket.
16:46Two free throws coming for C.J. McCollum.
16:48That's tough.
16:49That's a tough call.
16:51I thought Jordan Walsh had good position.
16:53Walsh-J. McCollum throw his shoulder in and just elevate.
16:58That's a tough call.
17:03McCollum is a big-time plus in terms of net rating since joining Atlanta.
17:07Here's a message from FanDuel.
17:12Kicks it out.
17:13Steps back.
17:14Puts it up.
17:17Bet all your favorite player props on FanDuel.
17:20New customers bet $5 and get $300 and bonus bets if you win.
17:26McCollum is a plus 11.7 on.
17:29Minus 10.2 off.
17:30A difference of about 22 points per 100 possessions.
17:33Now, small sample size.
17:34He just got here.
17:35But he was a winning player for the Wizards this year.
17:38Brown walks into it.
17:39Sticks a triple.
17:40His first of the night.
17:41It's weird.
17:42It's like Atlanta is not prepared to face Shielan Brown right now.
17:46They're not blitzing him on screens.
17:49They're not aware when he's getting downhill to send two.
17:53Walsh moving his feet.
17:57Johnson trying to get free.
18:00Walsh trying to hound McCollum.
18:02Three-pointer is no good.
18:03Keaton Wallace the rebound.
18:05Knocked away with Simons with the good hands.
18:07Now, Johnson.
18:09Kennard was open.
18:10He missed him.
18:11And missed the shot.
18:14Mark Lindsay will make the call.
18:15It's going to be Hawks ball.
18:18Joe's not going to be happy with this.
18:19He wants these guys on the glass.
18:21He feels like they can rebound the ball.
18:24Get more shots.
18:25It's going to be in great shape to win this game.
18:26Atlanta 28 in offensive rebound rate this season.
18:33Hawks are second in pace behind only Miami.
18:37Behind Quinn Snyder, who doesn't rock the red frames anymore on his glasses.
18:41Yeah, why'd you ask him that?
18:42Because I hadn't seen him without the red frames.
18:43I was wondering what happened to him.
18:45He did not like that.
18:46It was like I was asking Joe a question.
18:50He didn't want anything to do with it.
18:53That's out of bounds.
18:56And Celtics ball this time.
18:59I like the red frames.
19:01I thought so, too.
19:02That was his signature look.
19:03Yeah, I thought it showed team spirit.
19:06That's all magic.
19:08They're not wearing any red today.
19:09Maybe that's why.
19:12JB is 5 for 11 from the field.
19:14One more field goal attempt.
19:16He'll match a season high for his first quarter.
19:18As Garza instead gives him the assist and a chance at an and one.
19:23Good job by Jalen Brown.
19:27And Garza is going to make himself available right there.
19:31Two guys come.
19:32Hands are ready.
19:33Look at the touch.
19:38So just to be clear, this is my step-up guy.
19:42And I got him going for a double-double.
19:45Dang it.
19:46Come on.
19:46I need those.
19:47I got a big double-double for Garza tonight.
19:51Little 15 points, 10 boards.
19:58There is Okonwu for two.
20:03Echo Okonwu, year six from USC.
20:07Brown on the rip-through.
20:09Whistle, and he was in the gatherer, so two shots coming for Jalen Brown.
20:17Jalen Brown is so good at seeing gaps.
20:19Comes off that screen.
20:20You see the gap right there.
20:21He tacks it.
20:25Cannot believe that he missed it.
20:26First trip to the line tonight for Jalen Brown.
20:34Taylor told you about his ceremony at Wheeler High School yesterday.
20:40Of course, grew up in this area.
20:41They went out to Berkeley for one year playing with the Golden Bears,
20:46following in the footsteps of Sharif Abdul-Rahim,
20:49who also went to high school at Wheeler.
20:51Busy first quarter for J.B.
21:00Two boards, two assists, and now 13 points.
21:09He's playing in his 28th career game against the Hawks, 17-10.
21:14So far, Luke Kennard, a dangerous three-point shooter.
21:19Simons knows it.
21:20Guarding him closely.
21:24Mohamed Gay over Garza.
21:26Missed it.
21:26Okonwu, offensive rebound.
21:28He was fouled by Walsh.
21:31Remember, our bench group did such a great job against Miami.
21:34They went in.
21:35They provided a spark.
21:37They're not doing bad right now.
21:39They're just not getting that on the boards.
21:42Joe wants these guys to prove the shot margins,
21:45get on the glass.
21:46That's a tough call.
21:47That's twice that's happened to Walsh.
21:51He's got the two fouls.
21:55See Okonwu, their top scorer in the loss Thursday at Portland.
21:58He took 15 threes, made five of them.
22:01Comforts of home is presented by Bernie and Phil.
22:03Save up to 20% on great furniture at Bernie and Phil's.
22:07For Quinn Snyder's team, the travel schedule's been pretty brutal.
22:1125 games on the road, just 18 at home.
22:14But they're good on the road.
22:21I know.
22:22It's like, you know, them saying, hey, we'll be at some home games.
22:25We'll be all right.
22:26No, you won't.
22:28You guys are awful at home.
22:29A lot of Celtics fans in the house tonight.
22:36Six-point lead inside of two minutes in the opening quarter.
22:40Brown for three.
22:41He's fouled again.
22:42Three more free throws coming as Mo Gay got him on the arm.
22:46I'd like to see this one again.
22:48So this one last year for sure would not have been a foul,
22:51but he might have followed through.
22:52Yeah, I think he did.
22:57He goes, shot is off.
22:59Oh, yeah, that's a foul all day.
23:00That's a foul last year, 100 years ago.
23:03Doesn't matter, that's a foul.
23:05A foul's a foul.
23:06No, that's a foul.
23:12What a first quarter for Jalen Brown.
23:14Homecoming, gets the jersey retired.
23:18Just a few shots early, but wasn't discouraged.
23:22If he makes this free throw, he'll have 15 points in the opening quarter.
23:26We should clarify the Baylor, Shireman, Jason Tatum, Selly.
23:30I did kind of throw him under the bus.
23:33I guess Shireman told Jason Tatum,
23:36this is a good Selly because your wrist is hurting.
23:39And Tatum took it and gave him credit.
23:44So shout out to the person that texted me that.
23:46I want to make sure I get these things right.
23:48It's important.
23:49It's a team effort.
23:50Where a guy, what country he's from, not as important.
23:55But Selly's and where they originated from, we got to get those right.
23:59That's critical for you.
24:01What a first quarter for Jalen Brown.
24:0316 points on his return to Atlanta.
24:06Alexander Walker averaging more than 20 points a game this season, his first year with the Hawks.
24:14Luke Kennard turning the corner, stops on a dime.
24:18Missed the Mid-Ranger.
24:20We have got to get on the glass.
24:24Quinn Snyder campaigning for that to be a shooting foul.
24:27It was on Ugo Gonzalez.
24:32But Atlanta did a good job of moving around.
24:36Look at Jalen Johnson comes from the other side.
24:40But ultimately, Joe's not going to care about those excuses.
24:42He wants guys on the glass.
24:44Yeah, I don't think that was the right announcement.
24:46That should have been called on Jordan Walsh.
24:48He had two fouls already.
24:49There's Ugo, and that is the foul on the rookie.
24:53Let's see what they called it.
24:59So you got him in the elbow.
25:00Let's take a look.
25:03Oh, man, that is tough.
25:07I mean, think about our trip.
25:09Indiana, super physical.
25:11They even go to Miami, up middle of the road.
25:14And this one they seem to be calling super tight.
25:23Jalen Johnson just a tick below 80% from the line this year.
25:27He's got seven triple doubles this season,
25:29which is tied for second most in the NBA with Josh Giddey.
25:32You can probably guess who's first in triple doubles.
25:36This guy's not even playing right now, Nikola Jokic.
25:45Brown, not done yet in this opening quarter.
25:48The up fake, the and one.
25:49Yeah, Okwongu can't guard him.
25:53So he went out to hedge the screen,
25:56and Jalen Brown did a good job of stretching it out.
25:59And all of a sudden now, Okwongu's on Brown,
26:02leaves his feet, no help at all from Jalen Johnson.
26:09That's Brown having an excellent first quarter.
26:12This is his first free throw of the game.
26:23He had made his first five.
26:25But it's a ten-point Celtics lead,
26:26first double-figure lead of the night.
26:29Hawks will be in Boston in a couple of weeks.
26:33Alexander Walker for three.
26:36Good player.
26:37They have an excellent signing for Atlanta this offseason.
26:40He's top ten in the league,
26:44and three-pointers made this season about 38% on the year.
26:49Corey Kispert in there defending Ugo Gonzalez,
26:52and my step-up guy has two points.
26:54Yeah, great drive.
26:56Getting that shoulder down,
26:57getting to the front of the rim.
26:58Kispert stripped.
27:06Simons playing good defense.
27:08Now he goes straight up.
27:09Kispert gets it to roll home.
27:11Simons has played five minutes in the first quarter.
27:22He hasn't taken a shot yet.
27:24Coming off 39 at Miami Thursday.
27:28He was the spark that helped the Celtics
27:29snap that two-game losing streak.
27:32Three seconds left.
27:33It's Brown rising fire.
27:35Doesn't get the roll.
27:36Jalen Brown takes 13 shots in the opening quarter
27:40in this homecoming game.
27:4118 points, a couple rebounds, and two assists.
27:47Celtics and the Hawks play for the first time this year.
27:49First of four meetings.
27:52And a good start for Jalen Brown.
27:54Seven-point lead for the Seas after 12 minutes.
27:57Welcome back to Atlanta.
28:03The road trip continues for the Celtics.
28:05On top by seven over the Hawks.
28:07On the scoreboard brought to you by
28:08Toyota's official website for deals.
28:11Buyatoyota.com.
28:13Come on back inside State Farm Arena.
28:15Drew Scowl and Kayla with you.
28:17It's time to check the stats by Jason Stone Injury Lawyer's
28:20official injury law firm of the Boston Celtics.
28:23Injured?
28:23Better phone stone.
28:24If I'm being critical, it's just about the rebounding.
28:26Atlanta had a few offensive rebounds.
28:29But everything else, I like what we're seeing from the Seas.
28:34Now shooting them by 13%.
28:37Both teams took 23 shots in that opening quarter.
28:42Here's Baylor Scheimer trying to deal with the center.
28:44Okonwu.
28:45Kata came over on the help.
28:47Okonwu saved it.
28:49Nikhil Alexander-Walker, five to shoot.
28:51Plenty of time for him.
28:54I don't know if that'll go down
28:55to the second chance point.
28:56Some of them did a good job of blocking shots being at the rim.
28:59But securing that ball will allow them to get out and run.
29:02Here's our snap action.
29:05Kata sets the screen.
29:06Simons just pops it and sticks it.
29:10Takes a few shots before he turns into Inferno.
29:13That's his one.
29:14Kinnard from the mid-range.
29:23Luke Kinnard has the third best three-point percentage in NBA history.
29:28Steve Kerr and Hubert Davis, the only guys ahead of him.
29:35There is White.
29:36Nice pocket pass, Kata drives, went for the Statue of Liberty, couldn't throw it down.
29:44No look pass and a beauty from Alexander-Walker to Mogey.
29:48That was a great pass.
29:50I was looking up the floor to see the trailer guy.
29:53Really good court awareness.
29:56McKeel Alexander-Walker.
29:58Hawks lead the league in assists, about 31 per game.
30:01Simons, no space.
30:03Doesn't get the bounce.
30:05And here comes Alexander-Walker.
30:08Kispert will try.
30:12White with the rebound.
30:14Over to Hauser.
30:15Relocates.
30:17And scores on a triple.
30:18Hauser has all the moves to get another, like, pass up on a three and still get a three.
30:27Alexander-Walker is fouled on his journey to the basket.
30:34Everybody's looking up the floor.
30:37There's Gay at the basket.
30:41Alexander-Walker has increased his scoring average by more than 11 points a game,
30:47which is the highest in the NBA this season.
30:50Career highs across the board.
30:53And it's just opportunity.
30:55And I don't know how much opportunity he would have got if Trae Young didn't get hurt.
30:59He still would have played a lot.
31:00More than he played when he was in Minnesota.
31:04Hey, folks, weeknights at 6.30.
31:05Tune in for Arbella Early Edition with Trenny.
31:08Trenny Casey takes a deep dive into the biggest sports stories of the day.
31:11It's presented by Arbella Insurance.
31:14Here for New England sports fans.
31:15Here for good.
31:16Of course, Trae Young was injured and now traded to the Washington Wizards.
31:21Hasn't played for them yet.
31:22Sounds like he's not going to play for a while.
31:24Jalen Brown looks on.
31:26The Hawks were 2-8 with Trae Young in the lineup.
31:29And an 18-15 without him in the lineup this season.
31:34They decided it was time to move on.
31:36Got McCollum and Kispert for him.
31:39Five-point lead for the Seas.
31:40Five seconds to shoot.
31:42Simons finds White.
31:43Shireman's open in the corner.
31:44And he cashes out.
31:45Good ball movement.
31:46Great patience by the Celtics.
31:51Shireman moving the feet.
31:53Alexander Walker missed it.
31:54Kata was there to challenge at the rim.
31:57Houser moving with a purpose.
32:02White inside.
32:04Kata puts it home.
32:06That is picture-perfect ball.
32:08That's when you run offense in practice 5-on-0.
32:11And it never works like that in a game.
32:13Celtics dicing up the Hawks defense.
32:15Welcome back inside State Farm Arena.
32:19The Seas up 10 here in the second quarter.
32:22Ah!
32:23Everybody, it's the end of an amazing streak for Derek White.
32:26But a start of a new one.
32:27Up until Thursday against the Heat, D. White has had the most consecutive games.
32:3277 total with a 3.
32:35Made 3 in Celtics history.
32:36You see those numbers there.
32:37D. White beating the next guy.
32:39And that's Isaiah Thomas by 20.
32:40He had an incredible streak.
32:42And I asked him this morning.
32:43I said, one, how does it feel to even get to 77 consecutive games?
32:47And he said, man, that's pretty cool.
32:48He actually shouted out our girl, Abby Chin.
32:51Because he didn't even know that he had that many consecutive games with those many made 3s.
32:55Tonight, he hasn't really gotten going yet from downtown.
32:58Waiting to see if he's going to attempt a shot from there.
33:00But he said he's really proud of that streak.
33:02And hey, he's sad it ended.
33:04He's mad it ended.
33:05But he said, today's the start of a new one.
33:07So maybe he can get past 77 this time around.
33:10I like that mentality as Steph Curry's got the longest active streak in the league.
33:18As Simons is called for the foul.
33:19And by the way, you might have noticed on the graphic, Jason Tatum is at 56 and counting.
33:24Live.
33:25So when he comes back, whatever that is, the streak is still alive.
33:30So Steph has the streak.
33:33And then he missed it.
33:35Now he has a new streak going?
33:36Yeah.
33:36I think it's 81 now.
33:38Maybe 82.
33:38But the other one's like 170 something.
33:40Maybe a thousand.
33:42I don't know.
33:42I believe anything.
33:43It's like Will.
33:44I believe anything when it comes to his three stats.
33:52Corey Kispert at the line.
33:54Hair still flowing.
33:55We saw him before the game.
33:56I said, wow, the new team, same hair.
33:59So that's one thing that will never change.
34:01Is the hair.
34:01Came over from Washington.
34:05Now Atlanta, his second NBA team.
34:10My daughter calls him Ken.
34:13He's just Corey.
34:15I wonder if he's seen that movie.
34:19Have you seen Barbie?
34:21I have not.
34:22I know you have.
34:23I actually have not.
34:24Oh, wow.
34:25I have not.
34:28Seven-point game.
34:31See if Simon can catch fire again.
34:34Up top for Kata.
34:36Couldn't handle the hot pass.
34:37Kata gets it back and stuffs it.
34:40What a play from Kata.
34:41Tommy point.
34:43Kata.
34:46Here's Kata with six points, three rebounds.
34:51Kispert finds Muhammad Gay cutting.
34:53And Kata there to bother the shot.
34:55Simons hits it ahead.
34:57Shireman finds White the trailer.
34:59A new streak has begun.
35:01He's now gone one consecutive game, making a three-pointer.
35:10After a streak of 77 in a row, just ended.
35:14Here's Johnson from the elbow.
35:16Jalen Johnson still quiet in this opening half.
35:200 for 4 from the floor.
35:25Simons navigates.
35:27Tough step back.
35:28Footwork.
35:30Supreme.
35:31Keep running action for Simons.
35:36That's a 7-0 run in under a minute for the Celtics Shiremen.
35:39The good double team on Johnson.
35:42Hauser ahead to Simons.
35:43You don't need to run action sometimes.
35:45That guy can find a shot.
35:47Anthony Simons carrying over the heat from Miami.
35:50Do we dare call him?
35:53Do we wait?
35:55Let me wait.
35:56On Wednesday, you can score seats or book a suite.
35:58Bring the hometown energy to TD Garden.
36:00Visit celtics.com slash ticks to find tickets.
36:05Electric Moment is presented by Audi.
36:07Bits of your New England Audi dealer today.
36:09Kata misses the jam.
36:11But look at the hustle.
36:12Give me that.
36:13And he throws it down.
36:14Gets the Tommy point.
36:15Here we go on the other side.
36:18Derrick White rises and fires.
36:21Gets that streak alive.
36:22A little step back from Simons.
36:24And we love this from the bench.
36:26Play a little defense.
36:27Even though they're starters today.
36:29And they get out and run.
36:31Anthony Simons with the sidestep.
36:33Three.
36:33Of course, the Atlantic called timeout.
36:39And the Celtics feeling good here on the road.
36:42On top by 17.
36:45And the first meeting with the Hawks this season.
36:49Simons with eight points.
36:50He's three for four from the floor.
36:52Two for three from downtown.
36:53He's now made 108 three-pointers off the bench this season.
36:58Tops in the NBA.
37:04Johnson finds the cutter.
37:06It's the rookie ace at Newell.
37:0723rd pick in the draft this year out to beat Preachy.
37:11Missed the shot.
37:12Three Celtics in the vicinity.
37:13Hawks will have another chance.
37:15Got to get on that glass.
37:16Hawks going with a small lineup.
37:18Newell playing at five.
37:19Johnson can play pretty much every position.
37:25Preachy has to fire.
37:26And hits it late shot clock.
37:29Preachy, good shooter.
37:30Not going to miss two in a row like that.
37:33Preachy on the year is almost 44% from downtown.
37:37He has been pulled just five for 25 in his last five.
37:43Oh, Simon's time.
37:46It's Simon's time.
37:47One, two, three.
37:49Better pull out the extinguisher here at ATL.
37:53The Inferno's coming for you.
37:55Just heating up, you know.
37:57Feel the temperature rising.
38:01Johnson comes up short.
38:03Jalen Johnson now 0 for 5 from the floor.
38:05He's got three rebounds and two assists.
38:11Hauser fires.
38:13And hits from downtown.
38:16Celtics unleashed.
38:16Let's go, Hawks!
38:18Sam Hauser 3 for 4 from distance tonight.
38:25It has been all C's in the second quarter.
38:32Newell fires that lefty stroke.
38:34And he hits the three.
38:36Yeah, Atlantic is going with five guys that can all shoot the ball.
38:39He hits the three-point shooting from the Celtics, almost 59%.
38:47Garza can't add to it.
38:49Johnson secures the rebound.
38:51Gisper tries.
38:55Gisper tries.
38:56That one's good.
38:57And Joe Mazzula's seen enough.
38:58Back-to-back threes for the Hawks to make this a 14-point game.
39:03Timeout Celtics.
39:04We've already had both media timeouts in the second quarter, so this is a shorter one.
39:08Yeah, in these types of situations, you've got to know, with five guys that can all shoot the ball, you can't overhelp.
39:16Because eventually you're going to be in rotation and you're going to find open shooters.
39:19A small lineup doing wonders for the Hawks.
39:22And here's a message from our sister station, NBC10 Boston.
39:26Hey, Celtics fans, there's another big game happening tomorrow.
39:29The Patriots are going head-to-head with the Texans.
39:32Join us on NBC10 Boston for team coverage live throughout the day at Gillette.
39:37And the winner of that game knows where they're headed next week.
39:42If anyone has taped the Broncos-Bills game and doesn't want to be spoiled, go ahead and mute it for three seconds.
39:47Three, two, okay, the Broncos, one.
39:51All right, now welcome back if you've taped it.
39:52I don't know if anyone still does that, but that's how it is.
39:56Hey, folks, your journey to becoming a season ticket member starts here.
39:59Head to Celtics.com slash waitlist to learn more about joining the season ticket member waitlist.
40:04It's presented by TD Bank.
40:07Dick Light points out.
40:08Go ahead, Scott.
40:09Yeah, Celtics is kind of unlocking offensively.
40:13A lot of it has to do with the Luka guards' screens and giving you some space.
40:16And then Anthony Simon just watched the footwork.
40:20Look at the snap.
40:21Unreal, unreal speed of those hands.
40:25And speaking of, Simon, Stick Life says the Celtics' record for points off the bench in back-to-back games.
40:30Oh, oh.
40:31Belongs to Larry Bird.
40:3476.
40:35What was he doing in the bench in back-to-back games?
40:37In April of 1985.
40:38He had 47 and 29.
40:40He had 47 until they're thinking, you know what, let's try it again.
40:43Yeah, it worked last time.
40:45And then he had 29.
40:46He's like, hey, man, enough of that.
40:48So, Simons is at 50 in the last game and a half as White puts it in from the mid-range.
40:54Here's McCollum hitting the gas into three Celtics defenders, and he threw it to the cameraman on the baseline.
41:05Newell was supposed to take that 45 cut.
41:08That was open.
41:09Game C. team of calm.
41:10It's a very few options on that play.
41:14Newell was a DNPCB in their last game at Portland.
41:18Hugo Gonzalez back in there, as is Jalen Brown.
41:22JB, a prolific and busy first quarter.
41:2418 points.
41:26Six of 13 from the floor.
41:28White comes up short on a three.
41:30Jalen Johnson has his fifth rebound.
41:33Four assists, just one point.
41:37Good ball movement here from the Hawks.
41:39McCollum with the air ball.
41:40Kispert all over White.
41:43Inside of five minutes until halftime.
41:45Brown going to work.
41:48McCollum quick hands.
41:51White gives it up.
41:52Hauser cashes out again.
41:55Sam Hauser is four for five playing with house money tonight.
41:58And I really like the patience of the Celtics just continuing to look for their shot,
42:02but also make the extra pass to the teammates.
42:06Fouls called on Veet Krejci.
42:09First one on Atlanta here in the second quarter.
42:11First, first, two, first, seven.
42:15Watch the Celtics right here.
42:18Jalen Brown gets the ball back.
42:20Two on one on the weak side.
42:22Hauser locked and loaded.
42:26Sam shooting 42% since the beginning of December.
42:30Above 45% in his last 13 games.
42:34He has found that stroke.
42:36Our producer, I mean, our director, Jim Edmonds, said,
42:40I'm going with Sam Hauser as my step-up guy.
42:44He's right so far.
42:45We're going to get Jim Edmonds on the animation before Tom Giles.
42:49Hauser again.
42:50He's catching fire.
42:52Five long balls in the first half.
42:55I mean, Jim Edmonds is 84 years old.
42:57I better start listening to him.
42:58Yeah.
42:58He's been around.
43:06McCollum can't answer.
43:07Gonzalez the rebound.
43:09Oh, this is a nice time to push it.
43:11Got to find Hauser.
43:12He has the hot hand.
43:15Brown going to work on the big man, Okongwu.
43:17Create some contacts and a chance at free throws.
43:20And if you watch this play, Krejci does not want to help
43:23because he's guarding Hauser.
43:25And this is how you support star players.
43:29Krejci's just, I'm not going to get off the body.
43:33So watch Krejci as Jalen Brown is going to work.
43:36He doesn't want to leave Hauser.
43:38That's a gap.
43:39And Jalen Brown, or you can say all the elite players,
43:42Kate Cunningham, Jalen Brown, Shea Gillis-Alexander.
43:47Once they have space, they're good to go.
43:49All they need their teammates to do is help them provide space.
43:54And it's interesting, too, because you think about what I just said,
43:57like, Hauser's got the hot hand, got to find 30,
43:59but it's not always like that, right?
44:00Sometimes you want to use it.
44:01No, Hauser did his job on that, for sure.
44:03Like, we talk about screen assist.
44:04That's a, I'm a good shooter assist.
44:07A gravity assist, if you will.
44:08Gravity assist, great call.
44:09We're looking at the game leaders brought to you by Arbella Insurance.
44:11Here for New England, here for good.
44:19Yeah, like, when you build a team around supporting star players,
44:22and everyone has a role,
44:24and that role is to knock down shots when you get them.
44:27Sometimes that role is to bring your guy away from the star player
44:29so that star player has a one-on-one opportunity.
44:34Johnson's pass deflected.
44:36Okongwu tries it from the corner and sticks a three.
44:40That's improved offensively.
44:43His first three-point attempt of the night mentioned
44:45he took 15 of them in their last game at Portland.
44:47Brown off glass for two more.
44:49Yeah, Krejci has no chance of guarding him.
44:51If they're going to send a guy, they can't send a guy off Hauser,
44:54but they do need to send a second guy to Jalen Brown.
44:57Celtics are piping hot in the second quarter.
45:0014 of 19.
45:01McCollum came up short.
45:03Volleyball tap out to Okongwu.
45:05Couldn't make it two threes in a row.
45:06Kata cleans up the rebound.
45:08Celtics on top by 23 points.
45:14Brown on the attack.
45:16Flips it up and in.
45:18Jalen Brown putting on a show in his hometown.
45:26All right, Jalen Brown gets the dribble handoff
45:28and watch him attack.
45:29Krejci fouls, but Jalen Brown with the focus.
45:34JB looking like MJ.
45:38Heard a little bit of an MVP chant here in Atlanta.
45:55Jalen Brown with 25 in the first half.
45:58He's already scored 50 once this season.
46:00Final three minutes of the second quarter.
46:05Celtics are all over the Hawks.
46:08Alexander Walker, no dice on a three.
46:10Gonzalez with another rebound.
46:1472 points, two and a half minutes left in the first half.
46:17Trying to find Jalen Brown.
46:18Hauser smoking hot.
46:25Oh, I love that.
46:27All action, including my eye, way up here.
46:29We're looking at Jalen Brown.
46:32Derek White does a good job of looking to the right side of the floor.
46:35Hauser comes off that screen.
46:36Money from three.
46:38Kata almost had the block.
46:39Bothered the shot from McCollum.
46:41Brown in transition.
46:42He has 25.
46:43Hauser has 18.
46:44There you go, there you go, there you go.
46:48Brown again.
46:49Mid-ranger is good.
46:51Jalen Brown cooking him up.
46:54JB putting on a show here in Atlanta.
46:5920-3 in the last three and a half minutes.
47:03McCollum lays it in.
47:07Good cut by McCollum.
47:08We talk about it with the Celtics.
47:10Coming home from a West Coast road trip is tough.
47:12That's what the Hawks are doing.
47:13Oh, yeah.
47:13They are just getting bombarded tonight.
47:16But I'm watching their schemes.
47:19Their schemes aren't good.
47:20It's like they're not really prepared to guard what the Celtics are doing.
47:25Jalen Brown came up short.
47:27That would have given him 30.
47:29Hauser takes it away.
47:30Yes, sir!
47:32Look at Hauser.
47:33Look what I found.
47:36The Howitzer will not miss tonight.
47:39That matches the Celtics' season high for a first half.
47:47Did it against Orlando in November.
47:50Still a minute left in this first half.
47:55Gonzalez secures the rebound.
47:57They should play two for one here.
48:01Take a shot around 33, 32 seconds.
48:05A 32-point first half lead.
48:11White into Krejci.
48:12No shot is the call.
48:15But it is a foul.
48:16First and the last two.
48:19Three fouls on beat Krejci.
48:21Hey, stay tuned for Celtics' halftime live with Tom Giles and Eddie Haust.
48:27It's presented by DraftKings Sportsbook.
48:39No two for one for the Celtics here.
48:44Brown, four to shoot.
48:45Jalen Brown in the lane.
48:47Walks through and scores.
48:49Flex on him.
48:50Treat McCollum like his little brother.
48:56Hometown Brown, 29.
48:59Celtics have a new season high in the first half.
49:0382.
49:05Lead by 34.
49:08Johnson, last shot of the half is good.
49:11Jalen Johnson's first field goal of the game.
49:14Hauser, it's good if it goes.
49:16Ooh.
49:18And it's a heave, so it doesn't affect his shooting percentage.
49:23It would be seven of eight in the first half.
49:25What performance from the Celtics' first half.
49:29Again, I think it sparked starting with Anthony Simon,
49:32and then everyone carried over.
49:34Three balls flowing in Atlanta.
49:37Inferno is contagious.
49:3931-point lead for the Celtics at halftime.
49:42It'll be a fun halftime show.
49:43Stay tuned for it.
49:44Stay tuned for it.
49:47Stay tuned for it.
49:48I'm going to stay tuned for it in the second half.
49:50Don't forget to leave it at home.
49:51I ain't love it.
49:52I ain't love it, boy.
49:53I ain't so I'm out.
49:53I'm going to keep it going strong.
49:55I don't even know.
49:56I just been up in my zone.
49:57I want to get my shot at the bear.
49:59Get right to the bear.
50:00After all, I need to be pretty good.
50:04See the boy.
50:09I just gave it to beca Bomb.
50:09I do the best.
50:10I was playing.
50:10I was playing with Casey.
50:11I waited for class on a play.
