Some dirty cash and switching allegiances test Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's loyalty in Joe Carnahan's hard-boiled action thriller, that's a little less than the sum of its great cast.

00:00Nothing comes between a couple of bros like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon like money
00:04in the Netflix action thriller The Rip.
00:07Tensions are high in Damon and Affleck's Miami Tactical Narcotics team
00:11when their captain Lena Esko is killed.
00:13TNT gets a tip about a stash house occupied by Sasha Kaye
00:17and discovers 20 million dollars of cartel cash in the walls,
00:20far more than they anticipated.
00:22And with that much money comes a lot of temptation
00:26and they aren't the only ones who know it's there.
00:28Inspired extremely loosely on true events,
00:31this is the perfect car material for director Joe Carnahan
00:34in his second film in two months after Zachary Levy's rescue drama Not Without Hope.
00:38The premise of Dirty Cop certainly evokes Carnahan's breakout movie Narc
00:42but the largely single location game of Who to Trust
00:45is more reminiscent of his more recent cop shop.
00:48And for the first hour or so, the rip is genuinely quite tense
00:52with Carnahan's direction gradually turning up the heat
00:55and it's very stashly shot with lots of heavy shadows
00:57for people to hide themselves in.
00:59This isn't so much a whodunit as a who's bent
01:02as everyone is given a potential reason to take some of the rip for themselves
01:06with Damon having lost his son and acting somewhat erratically
01:09as he takes command of the situation and Affleck is out for revenge
01:12as he was in a relationship with the late captain
01:14although he's far too stoic to show much emotion about it.
01:18Nobody trusts anyone including fellow team members Steven Yeun,
01:21Tayana Taylor and Catalina Sedino Moreno and no one can be trusted
01:26as the film sometimes lays out in rather heavy clumps of exposition
01:30for the likes of DEA agent Kyle Chandler.
01:32But the rip definitely gets most of its charge from pitting real life friends
01:36Matt Damon and Ben Affleck against each other
01:38and they produce this through their artist equity company.
01:41That said, I have started to notice a bit of a pattern in their films
01:44in that they're really drawn to talky scripts where they get to cuss each other out a lot.
01:48But the film starts to fall apart in the second half where it tries to be clever
01:52but just ends up getting overly convoluted
01:54before finally revealing itself as being less than it initially appears.
01:58And then it just gets plain silly at the end
02:00where a movie so much about proper procedure ends with a big dumb chase and shootout
02:05where people find machine guns out the sides of moving cars.
02:08But probably the most criminal thing about the rip
02:10is how much it underutilizes an exceptional cast.
02:14It's hard to decide who's most squandered
02:16one battle after another standout Taylor spending most of the flick just counting cash
02:20or the inspired choice of having Scott Adkins as Affleck's FBI agent brother
02:25and then not giving him a single piece of action.
02:27For a movie about dirty cops, this wraps itself up far too clean and tidy to feel credible
02:32and while it's quite watchable, it's hard not to feel not ripped off
02:36but a little short change given the level of talent involved.
02:40If I'm going to do this, let me show you how much of the film is to go for a good idea
02:42of, as always, the film has been working with a good idea of an actor and the film is to make
02:44a record of that.
02:44In a clip of an actor, this is what I actually married at which a video of the movie is to be
02:46a film.
02:46So I think that's number one of the documentaries are just going on man
02:47and I'm going to show you how much to do it, it's far as a little bit
02:49that's why I'm going to show you how to do it.
02:49So I want to show you how to do it, and I don't have any strength
02:51that you guys say.
02:52When I am back and I look at the film's work, I'm back and I look at it
02:52and I'm back and I look at that the film on one of our heads
