00:00If there's any movie genre that can be relied upon to consistently shock audiences, test their mettle, and challenge the integrity of their stomach, it's surely horror, right?
00:09That's certainly the case with these movie moments, all of which subverted our expectations, turned our stomachs, and maybe even broke our hearts just a little.
00:18With that said then, I'm Josh from WhatCulture.com, and these are horror movie moments that shocked the world.
00:23Dewey dies, scream.
00:24Despite Sidney, Gale, and Dewey being a rare trio of OG horror movie protagonists who've all managed to survive each successive installment,
00:32the fifth movie injected some unpredictability back into the formula by killing off fan-favorite Dewey.
00:37This time around, Dewey is now divorced from Gale and living out of a trailer when he's called in to help the new band of heroes bring down the latest Ghostface killer.
00:45This culminates in Dewey being gutted by one of the two killers at the end of the second act,
00:50a profoundly shocking and upsetting moment for fans who've rooted for the character for over 25 years.
00:56It was admittedly frustrating seeing Dewey effectively killed by his own stupidity though.
01:01I mean, he doesn't confirm the kill when he has Ghostface out for the count,
01:05and then goes back to rectify the mistake only to be distracted by a phone call, which gives Ghostface a window to strike.
01:11Even so, Dewey's death landed with a rare gravity and emotional impact for the genre,
01:15subverting the expectation that Scream's three leads were basically safe characters.
01:20Steve preps a human leg.
01:23Fresh
01:23Though the marketing for black comedy Fresh made it clear that something wasn't right with Noah's new boyfriend Steve,
01:29it held back from revealing precisely what.
01:32The first act of the movie then sees the two getting to know one another,
01:35with Noah seemingly finding the charming, gorgeous Steve an irresistible, improbable catch.
01:41She's then, though, drugged and awakens chained up, where Steve explains that he's actually a butcher of human flesh,
01:47and will be harvesting her for meat to sell to his high-paying clients, before eventually just killing her.
01:54Hearing Steve describe this process is one thing, but the very next scene shows him going about his business,
02:00as he dances around his kitchen with a freshly severed human leg from one of his other prisoners.
02:05Steve then lovingly cuts, tenderizes and packages it for his clients.
02:09Beyond the sheer shock value of seeing Bucky freakin' Barnes chopping up a leg,
02:14the scene is staged with all the pep of a wholesome cooking scene, and even scored like one, no less.
02:20While almost as darkly hilarious as it is completely messed up, the messed up part definitely still wins out.
02:26Melody Gets Decapitated
02:28Texas Chainsaw Massacre
02:29Netflix's Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie proved relatively divisive with fans,
02:34but it certainly went out with quite the bang, serving up an extremely gnarly final kill in its closing moments.
02:40At movie's end, it appears that sisters Lila and Melody have managed to kill or at least incapacitate Leatherface by knocking him into a pool of water.
02:48But as they escape, he actually comes back for one more scare.
02:52As they start driving away from the abandoned Texan town of Harlow,
02:56one of the cars windows is smashed in by Leatherface, who then grabs Melody and rips her out of the car.
03:01Lila then can only watch in abject horror, as Leatherface revs up his chainsaw and slices through Melody's neck, cleanly cutting her head off.
03:10While most filmmakers would cut away from this moment, director David Blue Garcia instead lingers on the horrifying bodily destruction on display,
03:18confirming that, as not great as much of the movie is, it at least committed to being refreshingly nasty where its kills were concerned.
03:26Pearl and Howard have sex with Maxine under the bed.
03:29X
03:29Is there any fear more universal than getting trapped under a bed that two people are screwing on?
03:36Well, what about if those two people were two creepy killers?
03:40Ty West's deliriously entertaining exploitation throwback X puts spunky protagonist Maxine through just such a scenario
03:46when she attempted to hide from Pearl and Howard, the murderously horny elderly couple hunting down the cast of a porn film being shot on their property.
03:55More squirm-inducing than any of the movie's brutal kills is the stomach-nodding sequence where Maxine hides under the couple's bed,
04:02only for them to enter the bedroom, have a heart-to-heart, and then start having loud, intense sex.
04:08All the thoroughly traumatized Maxine can do is slowly try to slide herself out from under the bed and flee the area.
04:13And due to the vigorousness of what's going on above, Pearl and Howard thankfully don't notice her movements.
04:19Gwen's father whips her the Black Phone.
04:22The Black Phone may be a horror movie centered around a serial killer called The Grabber,
04:26who abducts and murders children from a sleepy Denver suburb,
04:30but it's also a character piece that observes the impact of trauma upon two young children.
04:34Protagonists Finny and Gwen live with their alcoholic, abusive father Terrence,
04:39with Terrence taking most of his frustrations out on his daughter.
04:42And so the most disturbing and unsettling scene in the movie has nothing to do with The Grabber kidnapping and killing kids,
04:49but the matter-of-fact way in which it depicts Gwen's physical abuse at the hands of her dad.
04:53In one deeply unnerving scene, Gwen is whipped with a belt by her irate father
04:58after her psychic abilities cause the police to come a-knocking on his daughter.
05:02While most movies would cut away to another room while implying the beating through sound alone,
05:07director Scott Derrickson decides instead to linger on the abuse,
05:10as Gwen wails in agony while Finny helplessly watches her be beaten.
05:15Allie rips her jaw open.
05:17Hatching
05:17Finisher body horror film Hatching follows Tinger,
05:20a young gymnast who finds a mysterious egg in the woods and decides to bring it home,
05:25caring for it until it hatches.
05:27Once the egg does hatch, it reveals a skeletal, bird-like creature,
05:31which Tinger names Allie,
05:32and continues to nurture while hiding its presence from her parents.
05:36Throughout the film, Allie begins to take on a more humanoid form as it feeds.
05:40In fact, it starts to look just like Tinger.
05:43In the climax then, Allie ends up attacking Tinger's mother after she accidentally hurts her,
05:48causing Tinger to intervene and protect her man.
05:51However, Allie responds by backing up and screaming so loudly that her jawline rips wide open,
05:57and the flesh of her face is torn apart with an absolutely revolting level of detail.
06:02Brutality inflicted upon children is always a tough watch,
06:05even when it's a weird fantastical creature who inadvertently did it to themselves.
06:10Angela kills Stretch, dash cam.
06:12A frantic found footage film in which a right-wing live streamer Annie gets more than she bargained for during a night of streaming.
06:20While intercepting a delivery order intended for her pal Stretch,
06:23Annie is offered a large sum of cash to transport a sick old woman, Angela, to an undisclosed location.
06:29Annie accepts the job but quickly realizes something isn't right with Angela,
06:33as she soon enough begins exhibiting supernatural powers such as the ability to levitate into the air.
06:39Annie and Stretch ultimately spend the rest of the night running for their lives,
06:42as they're pursued by both a murderously violent Angela and others,
06:46causing them to end up in the most creepy of locales, an abandoned fairground.
06:50The pair explore the area before getting into a violent argument,
06:54at which point Angela suddenly emerges on the left-hand side of the frame, behind Stretch, and attacks them both.
07:00It's an ingeniously executed scare that comes totally out of nowhere,
07:03despite both the sublimely eerie location and our expectation that Angela will return to antagonize the two again.
07:10While Annie just barely survives the night in one piece,
07:13the same sadly can't be said for Stretch, who gets his throat torn out by Angela a few moments later.
07:19The birthing sequence, Men.
07:21The film follows Harper, a recently bereaved woman who travels to a remote countryside manor for a holiday,
07:27only to find herself antagonized by a group of men, who all resemble the same person.
07:32In the insane climax, a naked man she's been stalked by throughout the film returns,
07:37now bearing a resemblance to the folkloric figure, the Green Man, representative of Rebirth.
07:43Fittingly, the man's stomach then suddenly swells as he violently gives birth to a young boy,
07:48who Harper encountered earlier.
07:50Again, a boy with actor Rory Kinnear's face.
07:53The boy then gives birth himself to a vicar Harper met before,
07:57before the vicar then births Harper's landlord Jeffrey,
08:00and finally Jeffrey births her dead husband James.
08:04While there are many, many readings audiences could take away from this jaw-dropping ending,
08:09the four-part birthing cycle is surely supposed to be representative of the cyclical nature of abuse,
08:14and how misogyny is passed down to men across generations.
08:17For many, it's the scene that caused the movie to jump the shark,
08:20while for others, it's cemented men as a daring, bona fide horror masterpiece.
