00:00Ukrainian refugees have been wrongly blamed for the Swiss bar fire in a fake video.
00:10This looks like a standard, trustworthy Euronews report about the fire that tore through a bar
00:15in the Swiss ski resort of Grandmontana on New Year's Day, doesn't it?
00:20In reality, though, it's a manipulated video that uses a real Euronews report as a basis
00:25to spread misinformation and wrongly blame Ukrainian refugees for the blaze, which officials
00:31say killed 40 people.
00:33The fake video has spread over Russian telegram channels and has the hallmarks of being part
00:38of a propaganda campaign designed to discredit Ukrainians under the guise of legitimate news
00:43outlets.
00:44Looking at them side by side, the real Euronews report and the fake video start off in the
00:49same way, talking about the number of casualties at the Le Constellation Bar, their ages and
00:55nationalities.
00:56But things start to get questionable when the fake video mentions that the tragedy could
01:01have been the result of jealousy-driven arson.
01:04It launches an unfounded accusation against a Ukrainian refugee called Oleg Kay, who it
01:09claims allegedly started the fire after arguing with his girlfriend the day before over her
01:14involvement with other men.
01:16She supposedly died in the fire.
01:18Oleg Kay worked at Le Constellation and was familiar with its communication system, the video
01:23says.
01:24But there is absolutely no evidence for any of these claims and all of the official announcements
01:29from the Swiss authorities refute them.
01:32The only people currently under investigation for the fire are the bar's owners, French couple
01:37Jacques and Jessica Moretti, for suspected manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence
01:43and arson by negligence.
01:45They deny wrongdoing.
01:46There have been no reports of Ukrainian involvement and official numbers say that there were no Ukrainian
01:52casualties or injuries.
01:54.
