00:00A leader on and off the basketball court.
00:04Tonight, a young Fisk University student-athlete remembered for his infectious smile, loving personality, and just an ability to bring warmth to any room.
00:1320-year-old Andre Bell's life was cut short after someone shot him along Interstate 65 Sunday night.
00:19Good evening, everyone. I'm Rory Johnston.
00:21This tragedy has left so many within Andre's Fisk family, just shocked and saddened.
00:26Tonight, our Kelsey Gibbs talked with one of Andre's teammates, who says it's still hard to believe.
00:35We're going to miss him being just a great brother.
00:40Andre Bell was a sophomore at Fisk University, a men's basketball player, a teammate, a brother.
00:48He was the quiet person, but everybody needs to quiet on their team because then that's how you know that they're listening to you.
00:54That means they mostly care about you and everything like that.
00:58Michael Ashley was Andre's teammate last year.
01:02I was his other team captain. He was my freshman.
01:05Michael says Dre, as many people called him, always wanted to be in the gym playing basketball.
01:11Just days ago, 20-year-old Dre played his final game.
01:16On January 3rd, he scored a high seven points, his teammates cheering as he hit a three-pointer.
01:21He was waiting for that moment, and I wish I was there, but I was watching online, and I love watching him play.
01:31Moments now frozen in time.
01:34Sunday night, Metro Police say Dre was driving back to campus with two friends after volunteering at a Fisk Gymnastics meet at the fairgrounds.
01:41They were heading north on Interstate 65 near the I-40 interchange when investigators say a dark-colored sedan pulled alongside them.
01:50Dre's friends told police they were briefly distracted, then heard multiple gunshots.
01:56Dre was shot in the head.
01:58I couldn't believe it. I was like, not Dre. Not Andre Bell.
02:03Friends say Dre was known for giving back, often volunteering, feeding the homeless, and helping families in need.
02:10We did Bible study together all the time. We would always help out. We would go feed the homeless.
02:15We would help the people out in their apartments, give them food, Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas baskets.
02:20As detectives search for answers, and a suspect, the Fisk family is leaning on each other.
02:26Everybody at Fisk, please just keep your heads up. Prayers to Andre's family. Gone too soon. That was the wrong person to take.
02:38I know we all say, when it's your time, it's your time, but this one's hard.
02:45And remembering a young life taken far too soon.
02:49I'm going to miss my little bro.
02:50So many will miss this young man. He sounded like an outstanding person.
02:57All right. We know, Kelsey, that police are looking for a motive, but they do have maybe a little bit of a clue suggesting that the shooter's car had some windshield damage.
03:07That's something.
03:07That's something.
03:08So, yeah, they're asking anyone with information or dash cam video from that area.
03:12After 8 p.m., they are urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
03:16And the university athletic director, Valencia Jordan, calling this a senseless act of violence.
03:20So, of course, justice is so, so important, and counseling is being offered for the basketball team.
03:26And I'm sure they hope that there's justice in this case, too.
03:29Kelsey, thanks.
