00:00On this day in space. On January 13, 1978, NASA selected its 8th and most diverse class of
00:08astronauts yet. The astronaut class of 1978, also known as the 35 New Guys, included the first six
00:15female astronauts. One of those women, Sally Ride, became the first American woman to fly in space
00:21in 1983. That same year, Guy Bluford became the first African-American man to fly in space.
00:26Their classmate, Judith Resnick, became the first Jewish American in space in 1984, and Ellison
00:33Onizuka became the first Asian-American in space in 1985. This astronaut class was unlike any that
00:39came before it and kicked off a new era of diversity in space exploration. And that's what happened
00:44on this day in space.
