En 1959, Alfred Hitchcock jouit d'un succès incontestable. Son dernier film, "La Mort aux trousses", a fait un véritable tabac, et le réalisateur songe à adapter au cinéma un roman de Robert Bloch, qui raconte par le menu les crimes d'un tueur en série. Si l'entourage de Hitchcock manifeste peu d'enthousiasme face à ce nouveau projet, son épouse et fidèle collaboratrice Alma, elle, accueille chaudement l'idée et accepte de l'aider à la mettre en oeuvre. Ensemble, ils s'attaquent à l'élaboration du vertigineux "Psychose", un thriller controversé appelé à devenir un grand classique du cinéma...
