Lors d'une promenade sur un lac, John Haloran, héritier d'une vieille famille irlandaise, apprend à sa femme Louise, une Américaine, qu'elle ne pourra bénéficier de l'héritage de lady Haloran que si lui-même, qui est cardiaque, reste en vie. Une dispute éclate. A bout de nerfs, John est victime d'une attaque et meurt. Louise pousse le corps à l'eau et fait croire à lady Haloran et à ses deux autres fils que John a pris l'avion pour New York...
