En 1968, l'entreprise de Donald Crowhurst, inventeur d'un radiocompas, est au plus mal. Afin de se renflouer, l'homme d'affaires anglais laisse parler sa passion pour la voile en participant à une course autour du monde organisée par le "Sunday Times". Il trouve des financements et construit lui-même son bateau, un trimaran de 12 mètres rarement utilisé en course à l'époque. Face à des navigateurs beaucoup plus expérimentés, il est rapidement distancié. Les difficultés s'accumulent, un de ses flotteurs prend l'eau, et sa vitesse s'en trouve réduite. Parce qu'il ne veut pas faire machine arrière, il donne de fausses positions, qui induisent des vitesses record...
