Adam, atteint de leucémie et au plus mal, a besoin d'une transfusion sanguine. Mais ses parents, témoins de Jehovah, refusent. Fiona Maye, une juge expérimentée, doit statuer sur ce cas compliqué, une question de vie ou de mort. Elle veut savoir si Adam a été manipulé par ses parents et si sa décision est bien la sienne. Elle consacre tout son temps à cette affaire, au point de négliger son mariage avec Jack. Jack l'aime toujours mais, délaissé, envisage de la quitter.
