00:00The protests are not just economic, they're also political at this point, with protesters
00:09that are out on the streets really expressing anger, frustration, and just deep grievances
00:18against the Islamic Republic. And the political nature of the protests are really evident
00:23in the size, but also in the chants that you hear on the streets.
00:28Well, it points to the widespread nature of anger, frustration, and grievances across
00:34Iranian society. This is not just one cleavage. This is not just a Gen Z protest or a bazaar-led
00:43protest. It brings together constituencies from across the country, including in provinces that
00:49are dominated by ethnic minorities. So it speaks to something quite bigger and perhaps more serious.
00:57These protests could become serious and significant really because people are very fed up and it
01:05appears that policy reform has reached a dead end as well. What I'm seeing now is fearlessness,
01:16perhaps, among the protesters. People are really fed up and we have to watch and see if security
01:23forces break ranks. That has not yet happened. And regime unity and consolidation has been an
01:31important element that has kept protesters at bay in the past. I think Venezuela is, of course,
01:39a cautionary tale, both for Iranian protesters as well as for the Islamic Republic. For protesters,
01:46are very, of course, of course, of course. It shows that the United States is really seeking to enhance
01:50and advance its own interests and a cosmetic sort of movement of pieces on a game board is perhaps
01:59what the U.S. is seeking and not really a meaningful democratic change in Iran. What is abundantly clear
02:08to me is that the system at large in Iran, the political establishment is at a dead end. And so without
02:14accommodation, without change in policy, but also in its position vis-a-vis protesters and perhaps
02:23the structure of governance in Iran, things are going to deteriorate.
