00:00Does the European Parliament have a MEP blacklist?
00:06Virginie Giron, a member of the European Parliament from the Conservative Patriots for Europe group,
00:11has claimed she is a target of a disinformation campaign.
00:15On X, she announced her plan to file a complaint against several media outlets
00:19for supposedly intentionally spreading defamatory claims about her.
00:23This includes the allegation that she was placed on a blacklist by the European Parliament,
00:27which she qualifies as completely false.
00:30According to Giron, these claims are part of a bid to discredit her head of France's local elections in March,
00:36where she plans to run for mayor in the city of Strasbourg.
00:40So where do these accusations come from?
00:42Well, in 2021, the EU Observer published an investigation
00:46claiming that the European Parliament has sanctioned Giron and seven other MEPs
00:50for allegedly taking part in irregular election observation trips.
00:54According to the report, five MEPs from France's national rally, including Giron,
00:59were accused of organizing so-called sham observation missions
01:03during foreign elections held notably in Russian-occupied Crimea.
01:07In reality, no formal blacklist was ever established.
01:11But Giron, and along with the MEPs listed in the investigation,
01:15were handed sanctions banning them from participating
01:17in European Parliament observation missions until the end of 2021.
01:22They were also warned that if they took part in other unofficial election observation activities,
01:28they could face suspension for the remainder of their term.
