À Anoeta, l’Atlético de Madrid débute l’année par un nouveau match sans victoire à l’extérieur. Face à une Real Sociedad en difficulté au classement, récente changeuse de coach et en manque de résultats, les Colchoneros avaient l’occasion de relancer une dynamique positive en Liga.  La première période est pauvre en rythme et en intensité. La Real impose son jeu, portée par un Takefusa Kubo très actif et un Mikel Oyarzabal libre entre les lignes. L’Atlético subit, manque de justesse technique et s’en remet à un hors-jeu pour éviter d’encaisser un but juste avant la pause. Julian Álvarez, peu inspiré, symbolise les limites offensives madrilènes.  En seconde mi-temps, l’Atlético ouvre pourtant le score contre le cours du jeu. Sur un centre précis venu de la droite, Alexander Sørloth place une tête piquée imparable. Un avantage rapidement gâché par un manque de maîtrise et d’agressivité.  La Real égalise logiquement grâce à une transition rapide initiée par Mendez, conclue par Gonçalo Guedes après un centre parfait de Kubo. En fin de match, les Basques se créent les meilleures occasions. Griezmann bute sur Remiro, mais l’Atlético passe surtout proche de la défaite.
