In a small village, there lived a wealthy family. The family consisted of the mother-in-law, father-in-law, their son Ramu, and his newly married wife Sita. Sita was a very hardworking and obedient daughter-in-law. She would wake up early every morning and do all the household chores—sweeping, mopping, cooking, and spending the most time washing clothes.
The mother-in-law was very strict. She would always say to Sita, "Daughter-in-law, the family's respect depends on the clothes. All the clothes must be spotless and shining. If even one stain remains, what will the neighbors say!"
Poor Sita would go to the riverbank every day to wash the entire family's clothes. Whether it was summer or winter, rain or sunshine—she never complained. But the mother-in-law was never satisfied. She would say, "Oh daughter-in-law, these clothes still look dull. Work harder!"
One day, a big fair was organized in the village. The whole family was supposed to go to the fair. The mother-in-law had gotten new clothes stitched. But the day before the fair, it rained heavily, and all the clothes got covered in mud. The mother-in-law shouted, "Daughter-in-law! What have you done? What will we wear to the fair now? You don't even know how to wash clothes properly!"
Sita quietly took all the dirty clothes and went to the river. It was still raining, but she sat there for hours scrubbing the clothes. Her hands turned red, she was shivering from the cold, but she washed all the clothes until they sparkled.
In the evening, when she returned home, the mother-in-law saw the clothes and was pleased. But she still didn't say anything. Everyone went to the fair. There, a neighbor asked the mother-in-law, "Sister, your clothes are the shiniest! How did they get washed so clean?"
The mother-in-law said proudly, "Our daughter-in-law washed them. She's like a washing machine!"
The neighbor laughed and said, "Sister, don't call your daughter-in-law a machine. She's a gem. My daughter-in-law tries to avoid washing clothes altogether."
On the way back home, the mother-in-law hugged Sita for the first time and said, "Daughter-in-law, today I realized how hardworking you are. I always used to scold you—forgive me. From now on, you rest; I'll do some of the work too."
Tears welled up in Sita's eyes. From that day on, love grew in the house. The mother-in-law started washing clothes herself and began treating Sita like her own daughter.
Moral: Hard work and patience can melt even the hardest heart. Respect your daughter-in-law, because the happiness of the home comes from her. Good deeds are always appreciated, even if it takes time.
