Synopsis : Californie, 1968. Le pasteur Chuck Smith est inquiet : ses paroissiens sont de moins en moins nombreux. Il a conscience que la jeune génération déserte massivement les églises, mais ne sait pas comment l'attirer vers la foi. Un jour, sa fille Janette lui présente Lonnie Frisbee, un jeune hippie qu'elle a pris en auto-stop. Celui-ci dit être un prédicateur itinérant, ce qui suscite d'abord des doutes chez Chuck. Mais le pasteur finit par sympathiser avec Lonnie et l'accueille chez lui, puis ouvre sa porte à d'autres jeunes hippies, parmi lesquels Greg Laurie, un adolescent un peu paumé qui a fui son lycée militaire et un foyer en difficulté....
