In Sweden, organic steel production is already in progress
The CO₂-free production revolution is coming to heavy industry. In Sweden, SSAB, the country's leading steel mill, has kicked off this radical shift. By the end of 2029 it will produce green steel, in a compact plant with an electric arc furnace.
In partnership with the European Commission

00:00The blast furnaces in Luleå in northeast Sweden will produce steel without releasing CO2 into the atmosphere.
00:09Steel production is highly polluting and the challenge is colossal.
00:13The energy transition of this steel plant is estimated at 4.5 billion euros and has already begun.
00:20Today at SSAB Luleå, we have a blast furnace root steel production.
00:26When we are building this new plant in Luleå, we will take away all of that coal and we will use fossil free electricity instead to melt the scrap coming into the plant.
00:37We will reduce the total CO2 amount emitted to the atmosphere by 7% in Sweden.
00:43The steelworks produces around 6500 tonnes of steel per day, the equivalent of an Eiffel Tower.
00:58In 2029, the new compact electric steelworks will produce more steel without using fossil energy.
01:05It is both a technological challenge and a strategic one, training the workforce in new skills.
01:12From today and until we are up and running with a new plant, all of these 1,100 people somehow need to be educated.
01:21So first of all, we have started actually with electricians.
01:28At SSAB, the transition to CO2-free steel represents a total budget of around 4.5 billion euros.
01:36The European Just Transition Fund supports it with 71 million, part of which is used for staff training.
01:43Victoria was a machinist at the steelworks, but a year and a half ago she crossed the conversion bridge.
01:53She applied for an electricians apprenticeship and was one of ten chosen out of a total of 60 candidates.
02:00Training lasted seven months with theoretical and practical classes.
02:06I love my new job.
02:12You can use both the body and the head because in a wrong search, you first have to read the drawings.
02:18Then you can go out actively, physically, and see your eyes.
02:25According to the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, which manages these grants,
02:30Sweden is a leading example in Europe in making heavier industry greener.
02:35The green transition in Sweden is happening.
02:39We have lowered CO2 emissions by almost 30% since 2010.
02:45So the Swedish goal is to be carbon neutral by 2045.
