00:00:00This is a Christmas story, though it doesn't really start out like most Christmas stories.
00:00:10For one, it's not Christmas or even winter.
00:00:14It's summer. I read it's winter down in Australia during the summer here in the States,
00:00:18which means it'll be their summer when we visit this winter.
00:00:22Oh, whoops, I'm getting way ahead of myself, sorry.
00:00:25I should probably start again.
00:00:30My name is Andy, and this van is taking my folks and me and some other people to a resort near Pismo Beach,
00:00:37which is on the coast between Los Angeles and the Bay Area.
00:00:41And our driver Mike said he knows every back road in the area.
00:00:48And that's Mike.
00:00:50At least he thought he knew every back road, because we drove through this really super strange patch of fog,
00:00:56and when we finally came out of it, Mike was totally lost.
00:01:01So when we all saw the first house we'd seen in like an hour,
00:01:04we stopped even though I knew it wasn't the resort we were supposed to be going to.
00:01:08There's nothing that makes people of action crankier than being stuck in a slow-moving van.
00:01:13And that's how the story began.
00:04:37Yeah.
00:04:37I didn't think it would be this hot.
00:04:40Molly, can you stop taking pictures for just a minute, please?
00:04:43Sorry, Connie.
00:04:45This place is so charming.
00:04:47Wow, this is very grand.
00:04:49What do you think, Andy?
00:04:51Andy, it's time to ask you a question.
00:04:54This isn't the place in the brochure.
00:04:56What's that, honey?
00:04:56This isn't the place in the brochure?
00:04:57This isn't the place in the brochure.
00:04:59This isn't the place in the brochure.
00:05:00You've got to be kidding me.
00:05:02An hour van ride through Backhouse Twisterama, and this isn't the right place?
00:05:06No, this isn't the resort.
00:05:07No, this isn't the resort.
00:05:10This is...
00:05:12I don't know what this place is.
00:05:14I should know.
00:05:15I have no idea.
00:05:18Are you having an episode, or are you just simple?
00:05:21Excuse me.
00:05:22Uh, Mike, right?
00:05:24So do you think you can get us to the right resort, or maybe you need to ask directions
00:05:28from somebody here?
00:05:28I suppose.
00:05:30This is just weird.
00:05:31I'm telling you, that fog back there, I've never seen anything like it.
00:05:35He's having an episode.
00:05:37You know, that's really not helping.
00:05:38Neither is broiling in the sun.
00:05:40Connie, please.
00:05:41What?
00:05:45Can I help you?
00:05:46Um, yes, please.
00:05:48I was on my way to the resort up the road.
00:05:52At least, I think it was up the road.
00:05:55He's lost.
00:05:56Oh, well.
00:05:57That isn't good, is it?
00:05:59Would anybody like some cookies?
00:06:01Fresh baked from the oven?
00:06:02Uh, directions.
00:06:04Kalita's needs directions.
00:06:05This is exactly why I never leave the city.
00:06:09Maybe the country just doesn't want you.
00:06:13Should we follow her?
00:06:14I mean, she probably has a phone.
00:06:16I don't have any reception.
00:06:16No, I haven't had any bars for, like, the past hour.
00:06:20We got rooked.
00:06:21I'm going to tear your boss and...
00:06:23Cookies!
00:06:32Andy, seriously?
00:06:34Mmm.
00:06:35This is the best cookie I've ever had.
00:06:37I'm so glad to hear you say that.
00:06:39You're welcome.
00:06:40Anybody else?
00:06:41Try one, Mom.
00:06:42Are they organic?
00:06:43We're trying to stay away from processed foods.
00:06:45It's not good.
00:06:53No, thank you.
00:06:57See?
00:06:58It's all year ago.
00:07:00Yes, very good.
00:07:02You're welcome, dear.
00:07:03Fresh cookies are just what you need to get your wits about you.
00:07:05That's what my husband always says.
00:07:07All right, fine.
00:07:16Mmm.
00:07:18We're pretty good, I guess.
00:07:19The resort you're looking for is just down the road.
00:07:23Turn right at the junction and then a couple miles down.
00:07:26That's what I keep thinking.
00:07:28But then I hit this fog, ma'am, and, well...
00:07:33Hmm.
00:07:35Just call me Nana.
00:07:36That's what everybody does.
00:07:38Mighty kind of you, Nana.
00:07:40I'm Mike.
00:07:41You all look so exhausted.
00:07:43Why don't you just get your things from the van and come in and freshen up a bit?
00:07:47And then Mike can go find the resort and give me a call when he gets back.
00:07:50I do need to use the facilities.
00:07:53Good.
00:07:53When you get to the resort, just tell him to comp us on a night or two and just come back and get us.
00:07:59Okay.
00:07:59Sure.
00:08:00If that's what everyone wants.
00:08:03Yeah, why not?
00:08:04Sounds good.
00:08:05Sure.
00:08:05I'll just have to tell my husband.
00:08:07I'm sure he won't mind.
00:08:08Please, everybody, come in.
00:08:10Great.
00:08:11It's settled then.
00:08:13You clearly need it, buddy.
00:08:14Mike, let's get the bags.
00:08:17I have a card for you, Mike.
00:08:21I appreciate you helping me out.
00:08:23I'll call you as soon as...
00:08:28This is you?
00:08:30Drive safe, Mike.
00:08:31I'll have some cookies for you when you get back.
00:08:44We really appreciate your hospitality.
00:08:57Oh, it's no bother at all.
00:08:59I'm sorry.
00:09:00I'm not good at remembering names.
00:09:02My husband, he's the one that has the knack for remembering.
00:09:05Uh, well, I'm Dean Johns, and this is my wife, Sadie.
00:09:08And over there is our son, Andy.
00:09:10Oh.
00:09:11Fine young man he's turning out to be.
00:09:13We're trying our best.
00:09:15Nana, do you happen to have Wi-Fi here by any chance?
00:09:18I really need to check in with my office.
00:09:20No, I should do the same.
00:09:22I've got all these reports I have to approve of.
00:09:24Oh, no, we don't have Wi-Fis here.
00:09:27This is our summer house.
00:09:29We try to keep work to a minimum.
00:09:31You know, relax, exercise, enjoy nature.
00:09:35Oh, really?
00:09:37Hmm.
00:09:37This was supposed to be a working vacation.
00:09:39A working vacation?
00:09:42Isn't that one of those oxymorons,
00:09:44like jumbo shrimp or good grief?
00:09:47All I know is I spend more and more time at the office these days.
00:09:51Yeah, we have to stay busy just to keep treading water.
00:09:53Yeah, and Andy's off to college soon, so...
00:09:56It's just the way it is.
00:09:58I see.
00:10:04Hey.
00:10:06I'm Constance.
00:10:08Brian.
00:10:10What do you do?
00:10:12You really want to know?
00:10:14I asked, didn't I?
00:10:16I'm an engineer,
00:10:18specifically for non-traditional propulsion systems
00:10:20and their potential uses
00:10:22in the meteorological and aerospace sector.
00:10:26So, you're a...
00:10:29Rocket scientist.
00:10:30It's true.
00:10:31I have a meeting at JPL on Monday.
00:10:34The Jet Propulsion Laboratory?
00:10:36Is there any other place worth visiting
00:10:38in this granola state?
00:10:41I don't think so.
00:10:42I actually own a catering company with my sister, Molly.
00:10:46I have to admit, I'm a huge science...
00:10:48I'm going to get some more lemonade.
00:10:52I was still talking.
00:10:59What are you, a photographer?
00:11:02No, just a hobby.
00:11:04I work at my parents' catering company with my sister.
00:11:07I make chicken on a stick.
00:11:09Oh.
00:11:10Too bad.
00:11:12Do you like zombies?
00:11:14I can't say I've thought about it that much.
00:11:16I'm Molly, by the way.
00:11:18I'm Andy.
00:11:20So, uh, do you go to college?
00:11:23No, maybe one day.
00:11:25Are you?
00:11:26Still in high school.
00:11:28What do you want to do?
00:11:30Know what my parents do.
00:11:32What do they do?
00:11:33Honestly,
00:11:34I have no idea.
00:11:36That must be Mike.
00:11:40Made it to the resort.
00:11:51Hello?
00:11:53Hi, Mike.
00:11:54How are you?
00:11:56You have a lot of curious people here.
00:11:58So, what's the good word?
00:12:00You made it to the resort, like I said.
00:12:02Good.
00:12:03Of course you did.
00:12:06What?
00:12:07The resort double booked for the weekend?
00:12:09And now your van won't start?
00:12:11Oh, dear.
00:12:13Oh, give me a break.
00:12:15I'm so going to sue these people.
00:12:17Brian, please.
00:12:19No, it's okay, Mike.
00:12:20Don't fret.
00:12:21Hang on a second.
00:12:21Why don't you guys all stay with us for the weekend?
00:12:25We have plenty of room, and we have all the amenities that resorts have.
00:12:29No use in delaying your vacation any longer.
00:12:32Yes.
00:12:32I wouldn't stay at the other place now if you would pay me, and trust me, they will pay.
00:12:37We wouldn't want to be any trouble, Nana.
00:12:39Oh, it's no trouble at all, like I said.
00:12:42Sounds okay to me.
00:12:43I guess we can make the best of this mess.
00:12:45Dean?
00:12:46Sadie?
00:12:47We'd love to, Nana.
00:12:49Wonderful.
00:12:49I'm so pleased that you're going to stay, and I know my husband is going to be so excited
00:12:53that you came to town.
00:12:55Mike?
00:12:56Your guests are going to be staying with us for the weekend.
00:12:59Yeah, now what I want you to do is go get that van fixed, and give me a call on Sunday
00:13:03when you're going to pick up your guests.
00:13:06Wonderful.
00:13:08You're welcome.
00:13:09Bye.
00:13:13Well, I guess I should show you all to your room.
00:13:15Okay.
00:13:16All right.
00:13:16Let's go.
00:13:25Listen, I love you.
00:13:30Yeah.
00:13:32She's very nice.
00:13:33Way better than the picture of that other place.
00:13:36Um, I don't suppose you have cable.
00:13:38We have a flat screen with a global satellite DVR downstairs in the family room.
00:13:43You're welcome to sleep on the couch if you'd like.
00:13:46I'm so moving in here.
00:13:47My husband just loves winter sports, and I love the Italian cooking shows.
00:13:52Oh, speaking of cooking, I was going to make pasta tonight.
00:13:55Is that okay?
00:13:56Okay.
00:13:58Sounds perfect.
00:14:01Great.
00:14:01Well, make yourselves at home.
00:14:03You saw the family room downstairs, but whatever you do, do not delete any of Pop's TV shows.
00:14:10It gets a little bit cranky if you can't watch a luge.
00:14:13Okay.
00:14:14See you guys.
00:14:18Just a little I'm playing spontaneity.
00:14:20Pretty natural.
00:14:23I hope this will suffice.
00:14:24You have your own bathroom, and there's little soaps underneath the counter.
00:14:30The shampoos, feel free to take them if you like.
00:14:33That's what I do.
00:14:35But don't tell.
00:14:37Dinner will be ready in a dip.
00:14:39Just let me know if you need anything.
00:14:40We will.
00:14:44I kind of thought this vacation was a bad idea.
00:14:48I wonder if she'd part with that cookie recipe.
00:14:50You know how big those would go over with our clients?
00:14:53That they would.
00:14:54I'm glad it meets your approval.
00:15:03Of course we'll be having to charge you a standard room rate and expect payment before dinner.
00:15:10But I thought we'd...
00:15:14Gotcha.
00:15:15Kidding, Brian.
00:15:17You really do need to loosen up a bit.
00:15:19Dinner will be ready in an hour.
00:15:22Thanks, Nana.
00:15:23Please, everyone.
00:15:44Just sit wherever you'd like.
00:15:46I'm just waiting for the pasta.
00:15:48It'll just take a minute.
00:15:49Hey, Pop!
00:15:59Dinner's ready.
00:16:00I'm sure our guests want to meet you.
00:16:02Coming here.
00:16:04Has anyone met the Lord of the Manor yet?
00:16:06He's been locked in the study all afternoon.
00:16:10What?
00:16:10The TV room's right next door.
00:16:13Hey, maybe he reads romance novels like Uncle Ted.
00:16:16Uncle Ted can read anything he'd like to.
00:16:18Yeah.
00:16:19Except he likes to act out the parts of the bug.
00:16:22Andy, not now, please.
00:16:24I just hope he's not a crank.
00:16:26Hello, cattle.
00:16:28Welcome, everyone.
00:16:31Sorry I didn't introduce myself sooner, but I had a problem at the workshop I had to take care of.
00:16:36Even in the off-season, there could be challenges.
00:16:38Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
00:16:41So, how is everyone doing?
00:16:45Good.
00:16:46Good.
00:16:46Well, I hope we show you a good time.
00:16:49Oh, my name's Pop.
00:16:52Oh, good.
00:16:53You finally came out to meet our guests.
00:16:55Just give me two more minutes.
00:16:58I hope everybody's hungry.
00:17:00Well, I am.
00:17:01How about you, Brian?
00:17:03How do you know my name?
00:17:03Well, I know everyone's name.
00:17:06Nana gave me a list.
00:17:09Let's see.
00:17:13Checking it twice.
00:17:17Brian, Constance, Molly, Andy, Sadie, Dean.
00:17:20Wow.
00:17:22Perfect.
00:17:24Wonderful.
00:17:25Well, I know you're all disappointed you didn't get to go to your resort, but we have beautiful
00:17:30grounds here you're welcome to take advantage of.
00:17:32And if you'd like, we could set up some activities.
00:17:36You mean like games we can all join in?
00:17:38Oh, yes.
00:17:39Will some be excluded if their noses are too bright?
00:17:43You'll have to excuse Brian.
00:17:45Apparently, he thinks he's funny.
00:17:46Hey, I can speak for myself, lady.
00:17:48You can speak for yourself badly, sure.
00:17:51And I am no lady.
00:17:52I will kick your...
00:17:53Meatballs and sauce.
00:17:55I separated the meatballs from the sauce.
00:17:58I thought maybe some of you don't eat meat.
00:18:01Oh, thank you.
00:18:02You're very kind.
00:18:03Indeed.
00:18:04Now, would anybody like some wine?
00:18:06Yes.
00:18:06Yes, I need it.
00:18:10Please.
00:18:11Excuse me, Pop.
00:18:13Yes, Andy.
00:18:14Has anyone ever mentioned what kind of looked like?
00:18:16Santa Claus?
00:18:18If he was younger and thinner?
00:18:19And Nathaniel John.
00:18:21Please, be kind to our host.
00:18:23I thought I was, Mom.
00:18:25Well, Andy, the truth is, in the off-season, Santa gets to swim lots of laps in his pool.
00:18:33Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:18:34I'm kidding.
00:18:35Ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:18:37Ha, ha.
00:18:37Who would care for Brad?
00:18:39Yes, please.
00:18:42Mm, it smells delicious.
00:18:46Mm, it smells delicious.
00:18:47Mm.
00:18:48Mm.
00:18:49Mm.
00:18:49Mm.
00:18:50Mm.
00:18:51Boy, that was so good.
00:18:59And no, I was so hungry.
00:19:01Thanks for helping me clean up, ladies.
00:19:03You're welcome.
00:19:04It was our pleasure.
00:19:04After a meal like that, it was a least week of dill.
00:19:07There's a man who can clean up tomorrow.
00:19:09I suppose.
00:19:10I thought about making a special feast tomorrow.
00:19:14I couldn't even think of eating again right now.
00:19:17Sounds good to me.
00:19:18I like it here.
00:19:21Well, if we're going to have a special meal, maybe we should make it a special night.
00:19:26What do you have in mind, pup?
00:19:27Well, everyone seems to have Christmas on their mind.
00:19:31Why don't we exchange gifts?
00:19:33Put names in the hat.
00:19:34Like Secret Santa?
00:19:35Yes.
00:19:36No, no, it's kind of, but it has another name.
00:19:41White Elephant.
00:19:42That's it.
00:19:42We'll exchange gifts, but no trading.
00:19:45It's been my experience that that's best done quietly after a holiday.
00:19:51Wait a minute.
00:19:52We're not exactly near a mall here.
00:19:55What am I supposed to get someone?
00:19:56A fistful of sticks?
00:19:58Maybe an evening with your sparkling personality.
00:20:00It's a gift that keeps on giving.
00:20:04Why don't we just make each other stuff?
00:20:06Like arts and crafts.
00:20:08Oh, please.
00:20:10I like that idea.
00:20:11It's like summer Christmas.
00:20:13You know, it is a thought that matters, right?
00:20:16Very true.
00:20:17And to that end, I'm going to disqualify myself in the sense that I am going to give a present to everyone.
00:20:25That's awfully generous, so...
00:20:26Yeah.
00:20:27Well, not really, Dean.
00:20:27You see, I consider myself something of an expert on giving the perfect gift.
00:20:34Of course you do.
00:20:36So, Christmas summer it is.
00:20:39I will tear up the names list.
00:20:41I put your name on it, Nana.
00:20:43And you'll put them in the hat.
00:20:45This is going to be so much fun.
00:21:02Perfect.
00:21:03Oh, you got me then.
00:21:06Huh?
00:21:07I prefer cash or gold coins.
00:21:10It's not you.
00:21:11Which means my summer Christmas wish already came true.
00:21:15Problem?
00:21:25Problem?
00:21:28Uh, no.
00:21:30It's going to be easy.
00:22:01What about me?
00:22:09Very funny.
00:22:13Well.
00:22:17That's everyone.
00:22:31We'll exchange gifts before dinner.
00:22:33And if anyone needs any gift advice, I'm available.
00:22:39Cause you have a sack full of ideas.
00:22:51Good night, ladies.
00:23:07Good night, Nana.
00:23:07I'm just down the hall if you need anything.
00:23:09Thanks for a lovely evening.
00:23:14I picked Nana's name for the not-really-white elephant thing.
00:23:18Who'd you get?
00:23:20Brian.
00:23:21Oh, I'm sorry, sis.
00:23:23Maybe you could get him a tool, since he has one.
00:23:26Really?
00:23:27He seemed to like you.
00:23:29Me?
00:23:30Uh, one, how could you tell?
00:23:32And two, are you kidding me?
00:23:34I'm just saying.
00:23:38Well, maybe you could help me make some Dutch apple pies for dinner.
00:23:41We could make extra and they could freeze them.
00:23:43There's a tree out back.
00:23:44They'd be fresh.
00:23:46I actually thought I might take some pictures.
00:23:49Come on, Molly.
00:23:50Give it a rest.
00:23:51We've got a huge fall season coming up, and I need your help.
00:23:54I know, Connie, but...
00:23:54Yeah, we have a responsibility to mom and dad's dream.
00:23:57I can't do it by myself.
00:23:59And you going off on some pipe dream,
00:24:01thinking you're going to make a living as a photographer,
00:24:02it's just crazy.
00:24:04I know.
00:24:04I'll just take a few, and then help you with the pies.
00:24:07You're sure you didn't have anything to do with bringing them here?
00:24:29It is what it is, dear.
00:24:30Regardless, I'm glad they're here.
00:24:33They all seem very nice.
00:24:35I don't know.
00:24:39I've come to see.
00:24:40This is the surprise.
00:24:41Once we just open it in the end of the show,
00:24:43we have a new picture.
00:24:44It had this list.
00:24:45...up.
00:24:45...down is tonight with a load of 7.
00:24:47Increasing cloudiness tomorrow.
00:24:49Sticking and dealing with a high.
00:24:516.
00:24:52Hello, Andy. Anything good on TV?
00:24:55You have channels I've never even heard.
00:24:59What can I say? I'm a world traveler.
00:25:02I dig those crazy Bollywood movies, though.
00:25:05They sing and dance to everything, even the fight scenes.
00:25:08I love the colors myself. Do you mind?
00:25:12And I love these modern conveniences.
00:25:14Curling World Championships are on today.
00:25:17Do you, uh, like curling?
00:25:19Broompuck.
00:25:22That's what I called it when I was a kid.
00:25:24Oh, I see.
00:25:28Alright. Mom and Dad and I, we took a trip to Canada one Christmas.
00:25:33And it was the best time I ever had.
00:25:35Like, I really thought it was cool being there with them.
00:25:39I mean, how dumb is that?
00:25:41Doesn't sound dumb at all.
00:25:44It was my decision, too.
00:25:46Dad said we were going somewhere.
00:25:48And for me to close my eyes and point out a map.
00:25:51Winnipeg, Canada.
00:25:53It's a bit chilly up there, isn't it?
00:25:55I've never been so cold in my life.
00:25:57But I didn't care. We were on an adventure.
00:26:00Well, I know this weekend won't be much fun.
00:26:03Oh, no, it's great. This is the first time my folks have done anything like this.
00:26:08And I don't even know.
00:26:11And I might as well be the last.
00:26:15Hang in there, Andy.
00:26:17You know, maybe we can get in some Broompuck this weekend.
00:26:21That'd be cool.
00:26:25Good night, Andy.
00:26:26Good night, Pop.
00:26:47I hope he wasn't in trouble.
00:26:49Nope. Sorry. Your boy is clearly a menace.
00:26:52What did he do? I'm so sorry.
00:26:54I'm kidding. I'm kidding, Sadie. He's lovely.
00:26:57So, coffee is brewing in the kitchen.
00:26:59Pop and I, we get up really early, so please make yourself at home.
00:27:03Okay.
00:27:05Relax, dear. You're on vacation.
00:27:17Good morning, Molly.
00:27:18Morning, Pop.
00:27:19Morning, Pop.
00:27:23Oh, I didn't know you had a dog.
00:27:25Kenyon. He's a bit wolfy, a bit laid back.
00:27:29Takes it easy during the summer like Nana and I do.
00:27:31Or try to, anyway.
00:27:33Sounds lovely.
00:27:34It is. You're up early.
00:27:36I was just taking some pictures before my sister got up.
00:27:39I have to help her later.
00:27:40She doesn't like pictures?
00:27:42Not when I take them, no.
00:27:44Are you that bad? Get your thumb in the picture?
00:27:46I've ruined many shots with these button pushers.
00:27:49No, it's not like that.
00:27:51Could I see some? You have them in the camera, don't you?
00:27:53Yeah, of course.
00:27:57Very nice.
00:27:59Oh, I like that. Could I have a copy of that one?
00:28:01I have a photo printer in my office if it's not too much trouble.
00:28:04Oh, of course not. It's the least I can do.
00:28:07You really like it?
00:28:09You're very gifted, Molly. You really are.
00:28:13You know, I was just struck with a thought.
00:28:16You might be able to help me.
00:28:18You'd have to keep a secret. Are you up to it?
00:28:20You bet, Pop.
00:28:27Morning.
00:28:28Morning, Connie.
00:28:30Oh, that coffee smells divine.
00:28:33It is.
00:28:35So I'm probably not supposed to tell you this, but I'm your secret Santa.
00:28:38And I was thinking about making a few Dutch apple pies for you.
00:28:40Notice the trees out there, did you?
00:28:42I did. And I also was kind of looking around and it looks like you have everything me and my sister would need to make with you.
00:28:46That sounds lovely. And I promise, I won't tell anybody.
00:28:50Tell anyone what?
00:28:54Uh, the coffee. It's great.
00:28:55Oh, I see.
00:29:01Is that all your recipes?
00:29:02Indeed. I saved the best recipes since, uh, well, let's just say it seems like a very long time.
00:29:10You think I could borrow one? Your chocolate chip cookies?
00:29:14I'd use them for good and not evil.
00:29:16I'm sure you would, but I really hate to be mean, but my grandmother gave me this recipe and it's kind of like a family heirloom.
00:29:26I understand. They're just really good. No problem, dear.
00:29:30Need a few things for dinner.
00:29:35Ouch!
00:29:37How does it feel to be shut down at Flives?
00:29:40I'm positive you know better than I do.
00:29:50Sorry.
00:29:51Croquet.
00:30:02I haven't played this in forever.
00:30:04I thought it would be fun.
00:30:06What kind of games do you like, Dean?
00:30:08Tennis, badminton, chess. I have a garage full of things I don't get to take out very often.
00:30:12Man, I used to love all that stuff.
00:30:14Used to?
00:30:16Yeah, but now with work and the economy being what it is.
00:30:20Things are tough.
00:30:22Feels like I have to work twice as hard to get half the reward.
00:30:26With the economy and corporate culture.
00:30:29You know, there's this kid in my office.
00:30:33Well, I say kid, he's 25 years old.
00:30:36He has no family, he works weekends, he can travel at a moment's notice.
00:30:39If I want to make VP before I retire, I've got to compete with him.
00:30:45And what if you don't?
00:30:47Well, I'll either lose my job or I'll be scrubbing out his executive bathroom.
00:30:53Take some advice from someone with a little success in global corporate identity.
00:30:59Take some time up for yourself.
00:31:01If you don't, you'll never be satisfied and neither will those around you.
00:31:05I hear what you're saying.
00:31:07But I've been running on this hamster wheel so hard for so long.
00:31:11I don't think I could get off even if I wanted to.
00:31:14Ah, it's easier than you think.
00:31:16You have a great son and wife to help you.
00:31:18Yeah.
00:31:20But we're both struggling right now and Andy's about to go off to college.
00:31:24The only reason we're here is because this conference I was supposed to go to in Santa Barbara was cancelled last minute.
00:31:29Due to some kind of freakish weather incident.
00:31:32Well, I would take that as a sign, Dean. I really would.
00:31:36I hope we have a chance to relax while you're here.
00:31:39Thank you. I appreciate that.
00:31:41You mind me asking what it is that you do?
00:31:44Oh, I'm in distribution.
00:31:47Nana! What's all this?
00:31:49Just a few people that expressed an interest in a spirited game of croquet.
00:31:54No, I didn't.
00:31:56Right. Where's my racket?
00:31:59The rules are very simple.
00:32:00You hit your ball through the gates to the post at the end, and then back to this post.
00:32:04First ball in, their team wins.
00:32:06And if someone hits your ball, you can totally hose them and bash their bonds next week.
00:32:11I believe the word is roquet, Andy, but I admire your flair for the language.
00:32:15Now, I'll be a referee, so you choose the teams.
00:32:17How about boys against girls?
00:32:20If you think you can handle the embarrassment.
00:32:21I was born to be embarrassed. I mean, that's not what I meant. Whatever. Care to make it interesting?
00:32:27What do you have in mind?
00:32:28A little wager?
00:32:29You're on.
00:32:31Gambling? Really, guys?
00:32:33Come on, Dad. It's just for fun.
00:32:34Andy, don't contradict your father.
00:32:35All right, all right. We'll keep it simple for the genteel among us. How about loser does the dishes?
00:32:43Well, I'm doing the cooking, so I don't do them either way.
00:32:46Okay. I don't know. I mean, Dean's got a point, but I guess it's up to him.
00:32:52I don't know about this, guys.
00:32:54Come on! Don't chicken out on me. You're on my team.
00:32:57Yeah, come on, Dad. Let's go, then. It'll be fine.
00:33:01Hey, yeah, why not? Loser does it.
00:33:04Come on, Andy.
00:33:05Ladies and gentlemen, start your mallets.
00:33:09All right.
00:33:12Go, go, go, go!
00:33:15Yeah!
00:33:16Yeah, you have two shots to get it through the center.
00:33:25Oh, now I gotta go to the center. All right.
00:33:27So, here we go.
00:33:29Oh, this one's a little hard.
00:33:31Oh, this one's a little hard.
00:33:32Go, Nana.
00:33:33Well, you have two.
00:33:34I got two.
00:33:36Knocking up a little bit on the first one.
00:33:38There you go, right there, right there.
00:33:39Right in the center.
00:33:40And...
00:33:43Ah!
00:33:47There you go.
00:33:48Good setup.
00:33:49Step high to target.
00:33:53Nice.
00:33:54I can roll over there.
00:33:55One more.
00:33:56I didn't hit you over there.
00:33:57Hey, come on.
00:33:59Why don't you get a shot?
00:34:00Three, two.
00:34:02Oh!
00:34:03Nice!
00:34:07You get another shot.
00:34:08To the center.
00:34:09Okay.
00:34:10Come on.
00:34:11Don't mess up.
00:34:12I'll try and do as good as you, Brian.
00:34:14I know.
00:34:15But I haven't excused my stick drum.
00:34:18I've heard that one more.
00:34:19That's right.
00:34:21It doesn't work.
00:34:28Yay!
00:34:30Yay!
00:34:31Come on!
00:34:33Now, good.
00:34:34Next.
00:34:35One more shot.
00:34:36One more shot.
00:34:37One more shot.
00:34:38One more shot.
00:34:39Two shots.
00:34:40Yeah.
00:34:41That's one.
00:34:42One more shot.
00:34:43One more shot.
00:34:44One more shot.
00:34:45All right, next.
00:34:46She missed it.
00:34:47Next.
00:34:48All right.
00:34:49That's right.
00:34:50That's right.
00:34:51All right.
00:34:52We can look right out of the way.
00:34:53From here.
00:34:54Daniel.
00:34:55You know what?
00:34:56You go first.
00:34:57Okay.
00:34:58You go first for us, okay?
00:34:59Yeah.
00:35:00All right.
00:35:01Off the score.
00:35:02Come on, Brian.
00:35:03What happens when you go faster?
00:35:04Yeah.
00:35:05You have to get around?
00:35:06You have to go.
00:35:07You have to go around.
00:35:08Oh, good.
00:35:09Because you have two.
00:35:10How many goes this time?
00:35:11Just one.
00:35:12Just one.
00:35:13Oh, that's right.
00:35:14Sorry, man.
00:35:15I'm sorry, girls.
00:35:16Oh, wow.
00:35:17You're shorter anyway.
00:35:18Oh, wow.
00:35:19You're shorter anyway.
00:35:29The umpire.
00:35:30The umpire says he can.
00:35:31Oh!
00:35:32What?
00:35:33I don't want it.
00:35:34I don't want it.
00:35:35Oh, we were friends.
00:35:40All right.
00:35:41So what I do now?
00:35:42Go back here and hit it through here.
00:35:43Yep, yep.
00:35:44How many shots?
00:35:45What?
00:35:46Bend it.
00:35:47Curl it.
00:35:48What do you think?
00:35:49Bend it.
00:35:50All the way.
00:35:51Go into position.
00:35:52Don't hit the blue.
00:35:53Not the blue one.
00:35:54Oh!
00:35:55Yay!
00:35:58Okay, go ahead.
00:35:59I can't move my ball because I'm going away.
00:36:01No.
00:36:02I can't go back and forth here.
00:36:03I think what you have to do is move it right over here so you can not get to where it is.
00:36:08No, I...
00:36:12No, that wasn't good because now you've got a good shot right there.
00:36:15Here's orange.
00:36:16This looks good.
00:36:17Okay.
00:36:18It's your turn, I think, Andy.
00:36:21Come on, son.
00:36:22Tell me what you made of.
00:36:24I want to see the way you like this.
00:36:26I want the stronger.
00:36:27Did you all...
00:36:28Did you...
00:36:29Nod.
00:36:30Nice!
00:36:31Nice!
00:36:32Nice!
00:36:33Nice!
00:36:34Nice!
00:36:35Nice!
00:36:36Okay, so...
00:36:37Up.
00:36:38So after the back...
00:36:39I just, like, hit it to about here.
00:36:41You want to hit it to the other way, didn't you?
00:36:42And then that's about it.
00:36:45Woo!
00:36:46There you go!
00:36:47Oh, it's in the hole.
00:36:48Oh!
00:36:49Oh, boy!
00:36:50Don't be like me!
00:36:51Don't be like me!
00:36:52Don't be with me.
00:36:53Thank you so much.
00:37:01All right.
00:37:03You go through to the right.
00:37:04To the right.
00:37:05To the center.
00:37:06To the right.
00:37:07To the far post.
00:37:08To the far post.
00:37:08Come back.
00:37:09Come back.
00:37:10To the right.
00:37:11Okay, and then to the right.
00:37:11Our left.
00:37:12Our left.
00:37:12Center.
00:37:14Here.
00:37:14Holy cow.
00:37:15I have to do all that?
00:37:16All that.
00:37:17Good luck.
00:37:17Come on, Sadie.
00:37:18All right.
00:37:18Let's go.
00:37:19Let's go.
00:37:20For the girls.
00:37:21No.
00:37:22Do I hit it sideways?
00:37:24Any way you want.
00:37:25Any way.
00:37:26Oh.
00:37:26Cheating.
00:37:27You usually hit it with the end.
00:37:28Come on.
00:37:29That's cheating.
00:37:30That's yes.
00:37:30What?
00:37:31Woo!
00:37:32It's perfect.
00:37:33Thank you very much.
00:37:34You get two shots now.
00:37:35All right.
00:37:37Let's see here.
00:37:41That's the way.
00:37:43Out.
00:37:44Good.
00:37:44Next.
00:37:45One more shot.
00:37:46One more shot.
00:37:46I got one more.
00:37:47One more.
00:37:52Two more guys.
00:37:57Whoo!
00:37:58Oh, yeah.
00:37:59Oh, yeah.
00:38:00I love it.
00:38:00Wow.
00:38:01Bye.
00:38:01Bye.
00:38:01Bye.
00:38:01Bye.
00:38:02Bye.
00:38:14Bye.
00:38:14I'm not very good at this.
00:38:15Hey, I got to get it back around.
00:38:16Yeah.
00:38:16Yeah.
00:38:17You can do it.
00:38:17You can do it.
00:38:18No, I think the red one belongs to a little boy.
00:38:20You know what they say?
00:38:21Well, one shot.
00:38:27Come on, son.
00:38:28Show them what you're made of.
00:38:29How about me?
00:38:30Show them what you're made of.
00:38:31Okay, okay, that was good.
00:38:33High five!
00:38:34That was pretty nice.
00:38:37How about a little?
00:38:44Do you love doing dishes or what?
00:38:47There, I know what you're talking about.
00:38:49Knock it away.
00:38:50All right, let's do it.
00:38:51After seeing Brian's display, I would not hit it too hard.
00:38:57No!
00:38:58Ow!
00:38:59Oh, my God!
00:39:00Oh, no!

00:39:45You hit it.
00:39:46I sneezed.

00:40:05But look, if I hit her ball, it's gonna go in, so...
00:40:18Go for it, man.
00:40:19Hit the side of it.
00:40:20Come on.
00:40:21Do your mom a favor.
00:40:22Go ahead.
00:40:23Hit it in.
00:40:24Do your mom a favor.
00:40:25That's not in.
00:40:26That's not in.
00:40:27That's not in.
00:40:28That is not in.
00:40:29You get a free hit.
00:40:30That's okay.
00:40:31It's close.
00:40:32What do I do?
00:40:33I hit the ball.
00:40:34The red one.
00:40:35You get to take her ball and put yours anywhere around it.
00:40:38Aww.
00:40:39You put your foot on your ball and hit your ball.
00:40:42He's announcing.
00:40:43The concussion.
00:40:44Oh, my God.
00:40:45I know what you're talking about.
00:40:46The concussion.
00:40:47Knocks it away.
00:40:48All right.
00:40:49Let's do it.
00:40:50And you can knock it any direction you want.
00:40:52She's my mom.
00:40:54Come on, Dad.
00:40:55We can win this thing.
00:40:56Yeah.
00:40:57Just don't choke.
00:40:58Take your time.
00:40:59Don't jinx him.

00:41:29You have it.
00:41:30My chance is my chance.
00:41:31Okay, come on, Dean.
00:41:32Something happened.
00:41:33Yes, go, go, go.
00:41:34This was your shot.
00:41:35No, leave him alone.
00:41:36You had it.
00:41:37Come on.
00:41:38Whoa.
00:41:39Whoa.
00:41:40Whoa.

00:42:11Got it.
00:42:12Awesome.
00:42:13I'm your secret Santa.
00:42:15Wow.
00:42:16I threw the game for you.
00:42:18I hope you like your gift.
00:42:20Mmm.
00:42:21Mwah.
00:42:22There's sandwiches in the kitchen if anybody's hungry.
00:42:25Mmm.
00:42:26Starving.
00:42:27Kicking your behind made me hungry.
00:42:28Ouch.
00:42:29Yeah, I'm famished.
00:42:30I'm gonna get some food.
00:42:31Here.
00:42:32Alright.
00:42:35Alright, Mom?
00:42:36Yeah.
00:42:37I'm okay.
00:42:38You gonna get a sandwich?
00:42:40Um, in a minute.
00:42:42Alright.
00:42:46Good game.
00:42:47Thanks.
00:42:50Did you get any good pictures?
00:42:51I did.
00:42:52Can I see them?
00:42:53Sure.
00:42:55Wow.
00:42:56It's cool you're a photographer.
00:42:58Oh, I'm not a photographer.
00:43:01You could afford me.
00:43:03You know, my sister, she's not that...
00:43:07Runs, runs your life?
00:43:09No.
00:43:12There you go.
00:43:17Hi, Pop.
00:43:18Do you mind if I sit down?
00:43:19Oh, please do.
00:43:21Um.
00:43:22I guess I need some help with this whole, uh, gift-giving thing.
00:43:25That's my specialty.
00:43:26I'm supposed to get Dean a gift.
00:43:27That's sweet.
00:43:28Yeah, well, he already got me his.
00:43:30He did?
00:43:31Yeah.
00:43:32I guess I need some help with this whole, uh, gift-giving thing.
00:43:37That's my specialty.
00:43:39I'm supposed to get Dean a gift.
00:43:41That's sweet.
00:43:43Yeah, well, he already got me his.
00:43:45He did?
00:43:45Yeah. He threw the croquet game.
00:43:48He said that was his gift to me, and he did it on purpose.
00:43:53Well, that's...
00:43:55Thoughtless. Self-absorbed. Patronizing.
00:43:59This isn't necessarily about the croquet match, is it?
00:44:03No, we're... we're not the people we used to be.
00:44:06Um, or even wanted to be.
00:44:08All we do is work, or think about work, or talk about work.
00:44:12I'm sick of it.
00:44:14Oh, you're both too hard on yourselves.
00:44:16I saw you out there having fun together.
00:44:18Yeah. Yeah, that was fun.
00:44:21And I miss that. I miss it a lot.
00:44:25I was just struck with an idea.
00:44:27Yeah. Okay.
00:44:29I'm going to tell you something.
00:44:31You don't have to do it, but please, think about it.
00:44:37Okay. You can't hurt.
00:44:38It really is beautiful here.
00:44:52I'm jealous.
00:44:54Pop and I are sure lucky.
00:44:56I'm just glad that we could share it once in a while.
00:45:01Molly, I need your help in the kitchen.
00:45:04I know. Connie, if you knew, you would stop wasting time taking pictures.
00:45:08We owe it to our hosts. Come on.
00:45:10It's lovely just having you both here.
00:45:12If you could just get your head in the game, that'd be great.
00:45:16Okay.
00:45:17We'll be done in a minute.
00:45:18I helped raise her when her parents passed away.
00:45:28Well, I'm sorry.
00:45:30That couldn't have been easy.
00:45:31It wasn't.
00:45:33But we have their catering business that they started.
00:45:36It was their dream.
00:45:38And it's really successful.
00:45:40It's just so much work.
00:45:41And I have all these ideas to grow the business.
00:45:44But...
00:45:45Well, I'm sure your parents are very proud.
00:45:48I just...
00:45:49I wish Molly appreciated everything I've done for her.
00:45:51Oh, she does.
00:45:53Everybody has to find their own way.
00:45:55She just has a lot of growing up to do.
00:45:59Don't we all?
00:45:59Don't we all?
00:45:59Don't we all?
00:46:01Don't we all?
00:46:03Don't we all?
00:46:09Don't we all?
00:46:11Hey, Molly.
00:46:21You want to go swimming in the hot tub?
00:46:23No, thanks, Andy.
00:46:24Maybe later.
00:46:25Okay.
00:46:35Hey, Pop.
00:46:36You want to go swimming?
00:46:37Or can you show me how the hot tub works?
00:46:39Sure, Andy.
00:46:40Give me a moment.
00:46:41I'm finishing up some work.
00:46:42Okay.
00:46:46Hey, Brian.
00:46:47You want to go swimming or you want to go in the hot tub?
00:46:50No, I hate the water.
00:46:51Oh, because Nana was looking for someone to peel potatoes.
00:46:55Love the water.
00:46:56Let's go.
00:46:56All right, wait.
00:46:57We just have to wait for Pop.
00:46:58Oh.
00:47:00Is he in there?
00:47:01Yeah, he's just finishing up some work.
00:47:03Have you been in there?
00:47:04No.
00:47:04Good.
00:47:05Let's check it out.
00:47:06Okay.
00:47:22Okay, boys.
00:47:23Ready to go.
00:47:24Sorry, I was working on your gifts.
00:47:35Great idea for us, Oak boys.
00:47:39No problem.
00:47:40Gets us out of working in the kitchen.
00:47:43Well, before we have to anyway.
00:47:45Hey, I don't care if we have to do the dishes.
00:47:48I'm having fun.
00:47:50Well, I'm glad to hear that.
00:47:55What?
00:47:56Oh, I'm sure it's much nicer than any other place.
00:47:59I mean, it's really nice of you letting us stay here.
00:48:03Our pleasure.
00:48:05I'm glad to see you're getting along so well with all the others.
00:48:10Do you have a girlfriend?
00:48:11A girlfriend?
00:48:12No.
00:48:14Because you and Connie, I'm just saying.
00:48:19Are you insane?
00:48:21She's the most irritating woman I've ever met.
00:48:23Anyway, what do a kid and an old,
00:48:27older man know about anything?
00:48:31No offense.
00:48:33None taken.
00:48:34Some taken.
00:48:36Gee.
00:48:39Do you think she likes me?
00:48:41I've seen my share of courting rituals,
00:48:43and I would definitely say that
00:48:44you're in one of the stages of
00:48:46one of the most elementary.
00:48:50I have no idea what you just said.
00:48:53Does she like me?
00:48:54Or does she not like me?
00:48:55If I were a magic 8-ball,
00:48:58I would say all signs point to yes.
00:49:02Hmm.
00:49:03What about you?
00:49:05What about me?
00:49:08I'm just a kid.
00:49:10Oh, come on.
00:49:11You're 17 going on 40.
00:49:13Just answer the question.
00:49:14Does she like me or does she not like me?
00:49:15Yeah.
00:49:17I think she likes you.
00:49:20Huh.
00:49:24So what should I do?
00:49:25I try being a bit less strident
00:49:27and a tad more affectionate.
00:49:34You don't have a clue what I'm talking about, do you?
00:49:36You mean stop being such a crank
00:49:39and throw her a biscuit.
00:49:42Biscuit?
00:49:43Yeah.
00:49:44Give her something nice.
00:49:45You know, write her a little love note.
00:49:48Works for me.
00:49:51Works for you.
00:49:53Oh, please.
00:49:55Do you have a lot of girlfriends?
00:49:56I do all right.
00:50:03I think I'm heading back inside.
00:50:06No matter what, Brian,
00:50:07stay true to yourself
00:50:08and who you are
00:50:10under that surly top layer.
00:50:13Surly layer.
00:50:15Exactly.
00:50:16It adds mystery.
00:50:21You guys are messing with me, aren't you?
00:50:23Oh, you got too much.
00:50:30Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
00:50:45Oh, I'm sorry.
00:50:47I can leave if you want to sleep some more.
00:50:49No, it's okay.
00:50:53Sadie, are you okay?
00:50:57I just had a lot on my mind.
00:51:07Yeah, me too.
00:51:10Now, the conference has been canceled.
00:51:12There's going to be a lot of traveling to catch up on.
00:51:16I've still got to sort out the problem with that server.
00:51:19Yeah.
00:51:23Well, I'm going to go down
00:51:34and see if they need any help setting up the dinner.
00:51:43Are you sure you're okay?
00:51:46Yeah, I'm fine.
00:51:47Molly, what is wrong with you?
00:52:05I need your help.
00:52:07It's incredibly immature and rude to our host not to help out.
00:52:10I am helping them.
00:52:12How?
00:52:12You're just thinking about yourself.
00:52:14I don't understand you.
00:52:15I know you don't understand me.
00:52:17That's the problem.
00:52:20That's the problem.
00:52:21See, I thought the problem was you not wanting to grow up.
00:52:23You won't let me.
00:52:25What is that supposed to mean?
00:52:26You've had my entire life planned ever since Mom and Dad died.
00:52:30And don't get me wrong, I am grateful for everything,
00:52:33but I can't do it anymore.
00:52:35Well, I'm sorry for interfering in your grand plans.
00:52:40I'm sorry for caring about your well-being.
00:52:43That's not what I meant.
00:52:45Well, when you figure out what you meant, get back to me.
00:52:47Hey, Dad.
00:53:05Thanks, son.
00:53:06How was your soak?
00:53:06It was great.
00:53:08Good.
00:53:13You look angry.
00:53:14Say something nice.
00:53:16Hey, you look pretty.
00:53:20What did that mean?
00:53:21I don't think it was good.
00:53:23I'm going to go check on dinner.
00:53:26Bye, Pop.
00:53:28Hey, you want to see what we're getting?
00:53:30No.
00:53:31Would it be naughty?
00:53:32No.
00:53:32Great, let's go.
00:53:33Come on.
00:53:35Oh, I know he doesn't see us.
00:53:36Where's Constance?
00:53:47She stormed in, and then she stormed right out.
00:53:50Her apple pie smelled divine, though.
00:53:53What's the matter, dear?
00:53:54I thought everything was going well, but now I'm not so sure.
00:53:58Not that you had any steak in any of our guests' lives, right?
00:54:01How's dinner coming?
00:54:04Great.
00:54:05Roast is in the oven, and the sides are all done.
00:54:07About 90 more minutes?
00:54:08I'll go tell the others.
00:54:09We'll do the gift exchange before dinner.
00:54:11Okay.
00:54:12I'll be ready.
00:54:13I'll go see who's outside.
00:54:15Okay.
00:54:21I don't think we should be in here.
00:54:24Well, I'll kiddo.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:25I'll go.
00:54:26I'll go.
00:54:26I'll go.
00:54:26I'll go.
00:54:26I'll go.
00:54:26I'll go.
00:54:26I'll go.
00:54:26I'll go.
00:54:27I'll go.
00:54:28I'll go.
00:54:28I'll go.
00:54:37Wow.
00:54:39Take a look at this.
00:54:43Look at all these.
00:54:45He thinks he's Santa Claus.
00:54:49Then what did that mean?
00:54:52What?
00:54:54What?
00:54:55Spill the beans.
00:54:58I overheard Nana and Pop talk last night and Nana asked Pop if he, if he had anything
00:55:04to do with bringing us here.
00:55:06Wow.
00:55:07This guy's too much.
00:55:09I mean, they had to be talking about something else, right?
00:55:13Right.
00:55:15Forget, forget I said anything.
00:55:20I got to go get ready for dinner.
00:55:25Hmm.
00:55:28So, did everyone have a chance to get a gift?
00:55:32I thought we might have our little exchange before dinner.
00:55:41If you need more time or need some gift advice,
00:55:47maybe we should just skip the whole gift exchange.
00:55:52I thought everyone was excited, at least a little bit.
00:55:55Eh, it's just a little weird.
00:55:58What do you mean?
00:56:02Andy and I went to Pop's study.
00:56:05And there is a lot of pictures of him in there dressed like Santa Claus.
00:56:10With deer and elves and...
00:56:12Pop.
00:56:13No offense, but you're just a little too into this.
00:56:17Oh, I can explain, Brian.
00:56:19Andy, what were you doing in Pop's study?
00:56:21He wasn't doing anything.
00:56:22Calm down.
00:56:23The matter at hand is...
00:56:25I want to know if Pop brought us here.
00:56:28Brian.
00:56:31Andy overheard Pop saying something like...
00:56:34He brought us here on purpose.
00:56:36That's not what he said.
00:56:38What's going on here?
00:56:39Yeah, Pop.
00:56:40What's going on?
00:56:41I'd just like this cleared up.
00:56:43Please.
00:56:44Everyone, please.
00:56:48I never meant to deceive.
00:56:50That wasn't my intent.
00:56:51Then what was your intent?
00:56:52You have to have an open mind when I say this.
00:56:56Besides Pop,
00:56:57I'm known by many different names.
00:57:00In many different languages.
00:57:01Santa Claus,
00:57:03Papa Noel,
00:57:05Father Christmas,
00:57:06St. Nicholas.
00:57:08You know me best as Santa Claus.
00:57:14You think you're Santa Claus?
00:57:17But I am Santa Claus.
00:57:19And my wife is Mrs. Claus.
00:57:21Mary Claus.
00:57:22At your service.
00:57:27You are both delusional.
00:57:30That is so sad.
00:57:31You don't have to believe.
00:57:37But I would hope that our words and deeds would speak for themselves.
00:57:41That's crazy.
00:57:43No, it's not.
00:57:44Molly,
00:57:45what's wrong with you?
00:57:47Nothing's wrong with me.
00:57:48I agree with what Pop said.
00:57:50Pop and Nana have been nothing but generous and kind to all of us.
00:57:54Yeah, and they lied to us.
00:57:57You know,
00:57:58I don't think we should be here.
00:58:01Dean?
00:58:02Why not?
00:58:04Andy,
00:58:04this is an adult discussion.
00:58:07So why don't you let me know when the adults show up,
00:58:09and then I'll be quiet.
00:58:11Andy.
00:58:11You're skating on den ice.
00:58:15Andy,
00:58:15you're mom and dad mean well.
00:58:17Who are you to judge us?
00:58:18I'm not judging you.
00:58:20I want to help you.
00:58:21Help us do what?
00:58:22Be crazy?
00:58:24Brian,
00:58:24that's not fair.
00:58:25Molly has been acting like a child since the minute we got here.
00:58:28That's not true.
00:58:29I don't know what these people said to you, but...
00:58:31Yeah.
00:58:32What are you saying to these people?
00:58:34Stay out of my business, little man.
00:58:36I was just trying to...
00:58:37Don't bother.
00:58:37You know,
00:58:42I think it's time we leave.
00:58:45Don't you think you're being a bit harsh?
00:58:47Don't we so wishy-washy, Sadie?
00:58:49Seriously.
00:58:49Okay.
00:58:53You make the decisions, and usually you leave us out of it.
00:58:57Come on, Andy.
00:58:59Sadie, that's not what I meant.
00:59:02Sadie.
00:59:05Sadie, come on.
00:59:06You know that's not what I meant.
00:59:08Sadie.
00:59:11I'm out of here, too.
00:59:13You're all nuts as far as I'm concerned.
00:59:15Let me know when you grow up.
00:59:16Oh, no, the roast.
00:59:25Hi.
00:59:27Would you like something to eat, dear?
00:59:30I brought sandwiches for everyone.
00:59:32Seems like they're all going to be staying, at least till tomorrow, anyway.
00:59:35No one tried to walk out?
00:59:36Well, Brian thought about it, but he likes my cooking too much.
00:59:43I messed up, dear.
00:59:46Go ahead.
00:59:47Tell me about it.
00:59:51I brought them here.
00:59:53I know.
00:59:56I wish I could grant every Christmas wish I get.
01:00:00But you can't.
01:00:01I can give toys.
01:00:03I can put a smile on a child's face.
01:00:05I can foster cherished family memories, but I can't do it all.
01:00:08There are things I can't control.
01:00:11But that's life, Pop.
01:00:12I mean, even for someone that has a few hundred years of Christmas magic under their belt.
01:00:16They all have unfulfilled Christmas wishes.
01:00:19Sadie, Dean, Molly, Constance, Brian, Andy.
01:00:22They all have a big goose egg next to the name in the ledger.
01:00:25I just want to clear up the accounts.
01:00:28Clean out the books a little bit?
01:00:30Yeah, but they're adults now.
01:00:32They're setting their ways.
01:00:33They're resistant to...
01:00:35A little Christmas magic?
01:00:36I should have told you much earlier.
01:00:42I told you everything.
01:00:43I'm sorry, dear.
01:00:44I really messed things up.
01:00:51You know why I love you so much, Pop?
01:00:54Because you don't give up on people.
01:00:56Not even those poor souls that are on the naughty list.
01:00:59Now, you find each and every single day is a chance to grow, to change, to find a little happiness.
01:01:07I know you're not going to give up on people here, nor anywhere else.
01:01:11But if I could just find a way to convince them?
01:01:14Well, you said it yourself.
01:01:17If children are more accepting, perhaps you just need to find the child in each one of them.
01:01:22I love you, Nana.
01:01:37I love you too, Pop.
01:01:39Now, get to work.
01:01:41Clean those books out.
01:01:42Clean those books out.
01:02:12I wanted to speak with all of you.
01:02:22What you do after that is entirely up to you.
01:02:26Okay.
01:02:27Go ahead.
01:02:28Andy,
01:02:29will you please read this?
01:02:32Sure.
01:02:38Dear Santa,
01:02:40my name is Andy Johns.
01:02:41This is my letter.
01:02:45Yes, it is, Andy.
01:02:46That's Andy's handwriting.
01:02:49That's the actual letter.
01:02:51I remember when he wrote that.
01:02:52He was just so proud.
01:02:54How do you have that?
01:02:56How is that even possible?
01:02:58Andy,
01:02:59please go on reading.
01:03:00My mom and dad and me had the bestest Christmas ever in Canada last year.
01:03:08It was so much fun for this year and every year after I want to have that much fun again.
01:03:16And that my mom and dad and my mom and dad have that much fun.
01:03:21I like them to have fun too.
01:03:22I like them to have fun.
01:03:23Thanks.
01:03:25Your pal Andy.
01:03:28Wait, there's something else written in here.
01:03:31That's mom's handwriting.
01:03:32I remember when I wrote that.
01:03:37I was just kidding.
01:03:38I, I...
01:03:39What did he say?
01:03:42P.S.
01:03:43Santa.
01:03:44Please make it possible to love my mad impetuous lug of a husband just a little more.
01:03:50Sadie.
01:03:50I've been hanging on to that letter for the last ten years hoping to be able to sign off on the Christmas wish inside.
01:03:57But I haven't been able to.
01:04:00In fact, Dean, you've been working six of the last eight holidays and, say to you, the last two.
01:04:07I had to.
01:04:09What do you care anyway?
01:04:11Dean, I am Santa Claus.
01:04:14There is no letter, no wish, no request, too small, too seemingly intangible.
01:04:20I just wanted you to believe in yourselves as a family and as people.
01:04:25It is the greatest gift you can give each other.
01:04:28Believe me.
01:04:38I need to take a walk.
01:04:42Dean, wait.
01:04:46I'm your secret Santa and, uh, my gift to you is to tell you something.
01:04:50Something I haven't told you in far too long and, uh, I know we have problems communicating and we're not happy.
01:05:00What fun.
01:05:03I love you, Dean.
01:05:05And I believe in you.
01:05:06And us.
01:05:09And, uh, I want to do whatever it takes to make it work.
01:05:16I know you do.
01:05:19I love you too, Sadie.
01:05:21I want to thank you for letting me.
01:05:40Just get to what you wanted to say.
01:05:44Would you please read this?
01:05:45Why?
01:05:49You know what?
01:05:49Never mind.
01:05:50Let's just get this over with.
01:05:52Dear Santa.
01:05:55I'm 11 years old and too old to believe in you.
01:05:59But my mom is making me write this for my sister, Molly.
01:06:04This is my letter.
01:06:06Yes.
01:06:06You wrote it 20 years ago.
01:06:08Please, go on.
01:06:09She's one years old and too young to write herself.
01:06:17My mom says I should ask for a dolly or a stuffed penguin, but maybe you can make her grow up faster and help me do my chores.
01:06:27I hope mom doesn't read this.
01:06:30Connie Perkins.
01:06:31Molly, would you please read this?
01:06:45Dear Santa.
01:06:47My name is Molly Perkins and I'm nine years old.
01:06:51I'm writing to you because my mom is sick and I want her to get better.
01:06:55Also, my sister Connie takes care of me and my mom and works so hard at it.
01:07:02I love her and would do anything to see her happy.
01:07:06Thanks, Molly.
01:07:12Two little girls that had to grow up way too soon.
01:07:16They both owed some Christmas magic.
01:07:19And I hope that you can find that solace in each other.
01:07:21I love you.
01:07:37I'm sorry for everything.
01:07:39I want the business to succeed.
01:07:41And I want you to succeed.
01:07:43And I want to help you.
01:07:47I love you, Connie.
01:07:48Mom and dad would be so proud of you.
01:07:59Thank you for taking a moment, Brian.
01:08:01This is just for novelty value, believe me.
01:08:07Did you Photoshop these?
01:08:09They look pretty good if you did.
01:08:11Brian, will you read this?
01:08:16Sure.
01:08:17What the heck?
01:08:18Dear Santa.
01:08:23My name is Brian Raglan and I'm seven years old.
01:08:31What is this?
01:08:34How did you get this?
01:08:37I wrote this.
01:08:38I know.
01:08:40Please.
01:08:40My mom and dad are broken.
01:08:50I got divorced that year.
01:08:56Both of them said I could have anything I wanted from you.
01:09:00And I want a peek-a-boo, mysterious flying saucer with omnidirectional laser turret action.
01:09:10If I had one, the other kids wouldn't make fun of me.
01:09:15I just know it.
01:09:18Please, Santa.
01:09:19I didn't get one.
01:09:27You didn't get me one.
01:09:31I should have, and I'm sorry.
01:09:33But you should know that that toy, the peek-a-boo, mysterious flying saucer with omnidirectional laser turret movement.
01:09:42It doesn't exist.
01:09:46Of course it did.
01:09:47I remember every detail of it.
01:09:49I'm sure you do.
01:09:50It existed in the imagination of a little boy who was hurting very badly at that point in life.
01:09:56That is not true.
01:10:00What about the Saturn rocket with the realistic decals and the one-stage booster you got me the next year?
01:10:07The Saturn rocket had two stages and a parachute in the nose that, well, never quite properly deployed.
01:10:16How about some quality control?
01:10:19And contrary to popular belief, the realistic decals weren't.
01:10:23How do you know of this?
01:10:30I know my toys, Brian.
01:10:33All right.
01:10:34How many rolls with caps came in the Texas Pete Deputy Sheriff Fun Kit?
01:10:4148 shots per roll, and there was a Texas Longhorn emblazoned on the stock.
01:10:47What color were the walkie-talkies in the secret agent spy kit?
01:10:50Black.
01:10:51It had a red button.
01:10:52It had a range of 30 yards.
01:10:54Wrong.
01:10:55They barely worked 30 feet.
01:10:56My friend Joey swore he could never hear me.
01:10:59Oh, your friend Joey never put the antenna up all the way.
01:11:04I knew it.
01:11:05I kept telling him.
01:11:08Whatever.
01:11:10How many skulls were hidden in Dr. Acula's spooky laboratory playset?
01:11:1616.
01:11:17Wrong.
01:11:18There were only 15.
01:11:19Everyone always forgets about Dr. Acula's hypno-medallion.
01:11:24Oh.
01:11:25That one.
01:11:27Brian, you were hurting when your parents got divorced, and you never wanted that to happen again.
01:11:32Oh, you were on my naughty list for years.
01:11:37My parents treated each other so badly.
01:11:39Well, they were hurting too.
01:11:41But they never should have put that on you.
01:11:43You closed down your heart because it was easier to close down and keep people out than
01:11:49to let them in, and maybe have them hurt you.
01:11:53But I believe, Brian, that you want to let someone in.
01:11:58I wouldn't know where to start.
01:12:00You could start with the peekaboo Mysterio.
01:12:03Did it ever occur to you that you became an engineer so that one day you could create
01:12:08that toy that you had created in your imagination so very long ago?
01:12:13But I don't make toys.
01:12:15You make wonderful things that help mankind.
01:12:17Things that one day will inspire a child to great heights.
01:12:21Brian, this is going to sound corny.
01:12:24But if you can open your heart, your creativity, peekaboo Mysterio will follow.
01:12:31You know, your gift was so much better than mine.
01:12:52I had a little help.
01:12:54You know, if Santa says we should believe in each other, then maybe we should.
01:13:08I really want to make this work.
01:13:12I really want to try.
01:13:15Okay.
01:13:15Cornstarch.
01:13:29Cornstarch.
01:13:31Brian, can I help you?
01:13:33Do you have any cornstarch, Nana?
01:13:34Or should I say Mrs. Claus?
01:13:36Nana is fine.
01:13:37Great.
01:13:38And, um, toothpicks.
01:13:42And maybe a small rotary fan assembly, like something you find in a processing unit.
01:13:46Okay, you lost me at toothpicks, but I do have cornstarch in the pantry.
01:13:50Great.
01:13:56Should I ask what you're making?
01:13:58Maybe history, Nana.
01:14:00Well, then I'll let you to it.
01:14:02If you need anything, just let me know.
01:14:03Great.
01:14:03Good morning, Andy.
01:14:29Good morning, Nana.
01:14:33You should know that I was your secret Santa, and I wanted to make sure that you get this
01:14:39present.
01:14:46Nice wrap job.
01:14:50Wow.
01:14:52Thank you, Nana.
01:14:54I know you know computers and interludes, but there's nothing quite like a good book,
01:14:59especially one that's going to help you find wherever you want to go.
01:15:03I agree.
01:15:05This is awesome.
01:15:07Give Nana a hug.
01:15:08I'm a hugger.
01:15:09Oh, right, Nana.
01:15:13Andy, can we talk to her a minute?
01:15:16Sure.
01:15:16We want to apologize for being so wrapped up in ourselves and, you know, forgetting what's
01:15:30important.
01:15:31We're not saying old habits are going to die easy, but we decided to work on believing
01:15:41each other and supporting each other a little bit more.
01:15:44And that includes you.
01:15:48Sounds good to me.
01:15:50I'm going to hold you to that.
01:15:52Both of you.
01:15:53Go make me ride Santa again.
01:15:56Okay.
01:15:58Anyway, to that end, I've decided we're going to go somewhere nice this Christmas.
01:16:03Anywhere you want.
01:16:03So I just want you to pick a place on a map, and we're there.
01:16:18What's so funny?
01:16:20Nothing.
01:16:20I'll tell you both later.
01:16:32Brian, did you stay up all night?
01:16:34I did.
01:16:35And I feel great.
01:16:38Look at this.
01:16:39Wow, that's impressive.
01:16:43What is it?
01:16:45It's a peekaboo Mysterio.
01:16:49But it's also a crude prototype for an inexpensive, self-propelled meteorological craft that can
01:16:56be easily replicated and has the potential to revolutionize climate data retrieval.
01:17:03Well, you lost me at toothpicks, but as long as you're excited, I'm excited.
01:17:07I thought I'd make one final breakfast for everybody, for the van comes.
01:17:11Yes, please.
01:17:12I'm done here.
01:17:13I'm just going to clean up, okay?
01:17:18Morning, Anna.
01:17:19Morning, dear.
01:17:22Hi.
01:17:23I wasn't sure if we were doing the gift thing, but I kind of took your gift anyway.
01:17:27Whatever.
01:17:37Wow.
01:17:37This is great.
01:17:41How did you know I like rockets?
01:17:43My sister mentioned it.
01:17:44She's a huge sci-fi nerd and got a bunch of these at NASA's JPL, but she doesn't know
01:17:49it's gone, so if you could keep it a secret.
01:17:51Of course.
01:17:52Your sister is a sci-fi nerd?
01:17:54Yeah.
01:17:55She loves all that space stuff.
01:17:57She wanted to see where they built the Mars rover.
01:17:59That's how she agreed to come on the trip.
01:18:00You don't say.
01:18:01If you could keep it between us, she could be kind of touchy.
01:18:05You don't say.
01:18:12Thanks.
01:18:13Nana, can I ask you a favor?
01:18:25My God, that was like the best breakfast I've had in... ever.
01:18:36Thank you, Nana.
01:18:38My pleasure.
01:18:39And I'd also like to say something to Pops.
01:18:41Say no more.
01:18:42Anyone, please.
01:18:43And I had my say last night.
01:18:45I really wish each of you the very best in all that you do.
01:18:49And now it's time for me to give my presence, thanks to the help of the very talented Molly.
01:19:01Thank you very much.
01:19:15Oh, Molly, these are great.
01:19:23This is really good.
01:19:24Yes.
01:19:26Maybe you could do our family portrait someday.
01:19:29I'd like that.
01:19:30Awesome.
01:19:32Glad you got the shot of me you were looking for.
01:19:39Oh, Molly.
01:19:41I almost forgot.
01:19:42I'm your secret Santa.
01:19:43And just a flash drive.
01:19:47So, you know, I put my junk off there so you can put your photos on there and show them to people.
01:19:53Thank you, Andy.
01:19:54Yeah.
01:19:55Oh, and also, if you take photos of zombies, you know I want copies.
01:20:00Will do.
01:20:01This is a really beautiful Molly.
01:20:03Mom and Dad would be really proud of you.
01:20:06And you have to keep doing this.
01:20:07You've got to follow your passion.
01:20:11This is your gift.
01:20:12I'm sorry I was too blind to see it.
01:20:16No more meat on a stick for you.
01:20:18But no buts.
01:20:20I'll make it work and so will you.
01:20:21What about me?
01:20:39Oh, come here.
01:20:41What is that thing?
01:20:58It's a prototype for an inexpensive, self-propelled meteorological craft that can be easily replicated and has the potential to revolutionize climate data retrieval.
01:21:13So it would fly vertically and horizontally with jump jet technology?
01:21:17Yes.
01:21:18Yes.
01:21:19Wow.
01:21:20Are you interested in this sort of thing?
01:21:23Maybe.
01:21:24Come on, look.
01:21:26Check this out.
01:21:27You see these four guys?
01:21:28Uh-huh.
01:21:29They're little rockets.
01:21:30No way.
01:21:31Yeah.
01:21:32That's so cool.
01:21:33Isn't that guy?
01:21:34Cool.
01:21:35That's so classy.
01:21:36This one's over here.
01:21:38Mike is on the way.
01:21:40Mike is on the way.
01:21:41The van will be here in five minutes.
01:21:47Um...
01:21:51Here you go.
01:21:57How is your secret Santa?
01:21:59Well, I didn't expect anything.
01:22:02What is it?
01:22:04Nana's chocolate chip cookie recipe.
01:22:12You didn't steal this, did you?
01:22:14Would you be more or less impressed if I had?
01:22:19Just kidding.
01:22:21Oh, she gave it to you and to me with her blessing.
01:22:27Santa's secret cookie.
01:22:29What's that?
01:22:30That's what I'll call them.
01:22:31These alone will get me so many jobs.
01:22:33Good.
01:22:34I'm glad.
01:22:38So...
01:22:39Tell me more.
01:22:41About?
01:22:42What do you do?
01:22:43Who are you?
01:22:44What do you like?
01:22:45You really want to know?
01:22:48I asked, didn't I?
01:22:56Thank you, Molly, for the tips.
01:22:57Much appreciated.
01:22:58No, Pop.
01:23:14Sorry for everything.
01:23:15I promise.
01:23:16I know how to get to the airport.
01:23:18Okay.
01:23:19Right.
01:23:20Things happen.
01:23:22Strange things happen.
01:23:25Sometimes, you just gotta go with it, Mikey, old boy.
01:23:31Here you are, my friend.
01:23:32Enjoy.
01:23:33Thanks.
01:23:35What is this?
01:23:36A gift from your secret Santa.
01:23:38But...
01:23:39You're not secret.
01:23:40Your wife gave me your card.
01:23:43True enough.
01:23:45You are Santa and Miss Claus, aren't you?
01:23:49But don't expect to be seeing us for a while.
01:23:52Did you guys make that fog?
01:23:54Let's keep that one a secret.
01:23:57Same thing happened to a reindeer of mine that had some steam issues.
01:24:03Okay.
01:24:04Looks like your travelers are ready to go.
01:24:07Thanks.
01:24:08Last picture, everyone.
01:24:09Smile!
01:24:11Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!
01:24:21So, that's the story about how we found Santa's Summer House.
01:24:27And that's the story about how we found Santa's Summer House.
01:24:39It sounds a little strange, probably because it is, but if you ever find yourself in the middle of a mysterious fog, then the best Christmas you ever have might just be a summer in California.
