The Physics of 'Back to the Future' with Dr. Michio Kaku | dG1fdXZDcDY2QVFablk

00:00Come here, I'll show you how it works.
00:02First, you turn the time circuits on.
00:08This readout tells you where you're going, this one tells you where you are, this one tells you where you were.
00:12Back to the Future is novel because you go forwards in time and backwards in time.
00:17And believe it or not, going forwards in time is the easy part.
00:20Our astronauts go forward in time by a fraction of a second every time they go into outer space.
00:30You realize that in outer space, like on the moon, time beats faster on the moon than it does on the earth.
00:36So it is true that if you could race near the speed of light, time begins to slow down so that you rocket into the future.
00:45Of course, we cannot go near the speed of light, but one day we will, and so future travel is a definite possibility.
00:55But going back into the past, aha, that's the killer.
01:03And if you have enough energy, maybe in a DeLorean, you might be able to wrench this river of time and make it fork into two rivers.
01:15According to the laws of physics, according to Einstein's general theory of relativity, time is a river.
01:23It's a river that meanders and goes backwards and forwards and does all these gyrations.
01:29And we now know it could have whirlpools, whirlpools in the river of time.
01:34The time continuum has been disrupted, creating this new temporal event sequence resulting in this alternate reality.
01:41English, Doc.
01:42Here, here, here.
01:43Let me illustrate.
01:44When Doc Brown went to the blackboard, drew the timeline, the river of time, and then drew a fork in the river of time.
01:53Creating an alternate 1985.
01:56That's how we physicists view the possibility of time travel.
01:59You jump from one stream to another stream.
02:02So if you go backwards in time, you enter an alternate reality, a quantum alternate reality.
02:08And Back to the Future, to my knowledge, is the only film which gets it right.
02:13Here we go lobbyist.
02:13Here we go.
02:15Today, we have a chance.
02:16As you
02:26want to enjoy the past time today.
02:30Let me welcome your friends.
02:31Keep on looking for a kiss.
02:33There it is.
02:34Well, thanks for the applause book.
