00:00I paid her to ask that.
00:01I still feel like I get banana peels thrown at me all the time.
00:05I have auditioned for every singing movie that you've done.
00:08God, I love your accent.
00:10I can't do that accent.
00:12Listen, this has been great.
00:13Thank you so much for everything that I need.
00:15I'm joking.
00:16Listen, I love this.
00:18And do you know what I love the most?
00:19It's you two singing together.
00:22I mean, how exciting is it that you're getting to do a film
00:25where you're getting to do all the acting as well,
00:27but you're actually getting to sing and sing together?
00:29It's everything we love to do, right?
00:32It's true.
00:32If only there was cooking involved as well.
00:34You know what I just realized?
00:36Oh, God.
00:36I just realized that I have auditioned
00:39for every singing movie that you've done.
00:43The Greatest Showman.
00:45Right.
00:46Les Mis.
00:47Right.
00:47And I finally.
00:49Well, and I texted Craig Brewer, the writer, director,
00:54and I said, Claire is Kate Hudson.
00:56Kate Hudson is Claire.
00:57And he was like, 100%.
00:59I'm getting in touch with her.
01:00I know I'm getting in touch with her.
01:01It just felt so obvious.
01:03It's like, yeah, it's like I wanted to, yeah,
01:06I finally got to sing with you.
01:08This is a perfect role.
01:09Yeah.
01:10And you're so good.
01:11And yeah.
01:12And singing together was just such a joy.
01:14When we were in the recording studio,
01:15we sung Holly Holly together.
01:17We were sitting on a couch, microphone,
01:19just holding the lyrics,
01:21and I just got goosebumps, you know.
01:23Your voice is, I mean, obviously,
01:25you're known for your voice, Hugh.
01:26Your voice is absolutely incredible.
01:28I'll never, like, not see you as Jean Valjean
01:30because that, to me, that performance,
01:32I watched it with my granddad as well.
01:33I dragged him to it.
01:34So that's special.
01:34Did you?
01:35I know he was, like,
01:36not really sure what was going on.
01:37He was like,
01:37thought this film was about war.
01:39But anyway,
01:39and Kate, but Kate,
01:40your voice I love
01:41because I am a rock chick at heart.
01:43And I just,
01:43your voice is so delicious.
01:46How fun was it for both of you
01:47getting to obviously do the rock element as well?
01:50Because I love old school rock
01:51like Neil Diamond.
01:52Yeah, I know.
01:53It was fantastic.
01:54And Neil's voice is, like,
01:56the same range as mine.
01:57He's such a beautiful singer,
01:59doing all those songs.
02:00And just,
02:01people love him.
02:02I sing him in my own show now
02:03because people just love them.
02:04They just make people happy.
02:06And those days of shooting
02:08with his bars.
02:10Yeah.
02:10It was incredible.
02:11And it was fun to get to do harmonies
02:13in those songs
02:13that we were sort of finding all the,
02:15this, like, new,
02:17you know,
02:17more of, like,
02:19like,
02:19Forever in Blue Jeans
02:20as a duet
02:21is actually really great,
02:24you know?
02:26It was fun to find.
02:27Am I right in saying
02:27that you two did
02:29a musical pilot
02:30or something together
02:31that never happened?
02:31Like a reading.
02:32We did, like, a workshop.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Yeah, they do workshops.
02:36Yeah, just trying things out
02:37and it never happened,
02:39unfortunately, but.
02:40It was a cool idea.
02:41Yeah.
02:42But I want the Hugh Jackman
02:43and Kate Hudson musical now.
02:45Right.
02:45Like, are we going to get back
02:47at the table now, guys?
02:48I mean, come on.
02:49You never know.
02:50I hope so.
02:51That'd be so fun.
02:52I paid her to ask that.
02:54I'm in.
02:55I will do it.
02:57And do you know what
02:58I noticed as well?
02:59Obviously, when I was watching the movie,
03:00you'd notice for struggling musicians
03:02what life is actually like.
03:04You kind of see behind,
03:05you know,
03:06what you see on stage.
03:07And I actually grew up
03:08singing in rock bands
03:09and all that.
03:09So I remember, like,
03:10all the gigs you do.
03:11So you're a singer.
03:12Well, back then,
03:13I mean, it's been a long time,
03:14you know what I mean?
03:15I can sing a wee bit
03:15in karaoke every now and then,
03:17but don't ask me to sing.
03:19But it made me laugh
03:20because you don't often see
03:22that side of, like,
03:23what happens
03:25and how much of a struggle it is
03:26and all the jobs you take on.
03:27I mean,
03:28does it make you reflect
03:29on the times in your career
03:31where you're, like,
03:31doing these random gigs
03:33or random jobs
03:33or you're struggling
03:34to get auditions?
03:35Yeah, totally.
03:36But I,
03:37by the way,
03:38I loved all those things.
03:39I did some theater stuff.
03:40I did stuff at the beginning
03:42when I was at drama school.
03:44Like,
03:44but I just,
03:45I was thrilled.
03:45But it's weird.
03:47What it makes me want to do
03:48is go down to my local pub.
03:49It makes me want to
03:51put a little extra money
03:52in the tip jar.
03:53It makes me want to stop
03:55and chat with that
03:55because they're often so great
03:57and they can be taken
03:58for granted
03:59and a lot of them,
04:00success is not just
04:01being Radiohead,
04:02you know,
04:03you're going to see
04:03Radiohead tonight
04:04at the O2.
04:05Of course that's successful
04:07but actually
04:08playing at the
04:10three nights a week
04:11in the lobby
04:12of the hotel,
04:13yeah,
04:14you're earning a living
04:15or you're just doing it.
04:17It's successful
04:17and they love it.
04:19Do you think it's also,
04:20like,
04:20just luck as well sometimes
04:21because I know
04:22obviously it's talent.
04:23Of course it's talent
04:24but do you think
04:24sometimes with the people
04:25that actually,
04:25you know,
04:26make it,
04:27quote unquote,
04:27sometimes it's just luck.
04:29I think it's a bunch of things.
04:31I think it's like
04:32the Outliers book,
04:33you know,
04:33it's the 10,000 hours,
04:36it's luck,
04:37it's circumstance,
04:38it's location,
04:40you know,
04:41I mean,
04:41there's so many things
04:42that are,
04:43you know,
04:44at play.
04:44Sometimes it's,
04:46you know,
04:47yeah,
04:48it's not,
04:49you can't boil it down
04:50to one thing.
04:52Longevity is talent.
04:54Talent will always win.
04:55It doesn't matter.
04:56Hard work.
04:57Hard work and talent.
04:58Just think of the luck
04:59of history.
05:01I mean,
05:02in the last hundred years,
05:03actors have been
05:04pretty much revered.
05:06But 300 years ago,
05:08no,
05:09you were the
05:09people throwing tomatoes
05:11at you.
05:11You were the court gesture.
05:12You were going
05:12from town to town.
05:14I kind of always feel
05:15like a court gesture.
05:16You still are.
05:16I still feel like
05:17I get banana peels
05:18thrown at me all the time,
05:20you know?
05:20No.
05:20It's like,
05:21oh yeah,
05:21it's okay,
05:22I get it.
05:23You know,
05:23part of me is like,
05:25you know,
05:26I think,
05:26right?
05:27You've got to be willing
05:29to wear the pie
05:30in the face people.
05:31You've got to be able
05:32to fall down.
05:32You've got to be able
05:33to laugh at yourself.
05:34You've got to be able
05:35to take it.
05:35My dad,
05:36actually,
05:36when I told him
05:37I wanted to be an actor,
05:38he said,
05:38I think you have the talent,
05:39but I think you're
05:40too thin-skinned.
05:40Really?
05:42Are you?
05:43I don't read reviews.
05:44I don't look at comments
05:45on that.
05:46Oh my gosh.
05:47Yeah.
05:47I am like...
05:49You're thick-skinned?
05:50I think so.
05:51I think you are too.
05:52I think so,
05:53because I also have
05:54only brothers,
05:55so that's kind of,
05:57was the beginning
05:58of creating a callus,
06:01because they just come
06:02at me with every criticism
06:04and judgment.
06:06No,
06:07but I think women
06:08is different.
06:10Sorry.
06:11But I think we do get
06:12far more criticism
06:14and judgment.
06:15Absolutely.
06:16And so,
06:17you have to like,
06:18it's more about
06:19how you look.
06:20It's more about...
06:21Is it many from women
06:22or everyone?
06:23What?
06:23What?
06:23The judgment.
06:24Is it many from other women
06:25or is it all...
06:26Both.
06:26Both.
06:27Kind of.
06:28But like,
06:29yeah.
06:30So I think you have to be,
06:32have that,
06:32you know,
06:34you take some...
06:36We've had such a deep chat.
06:37We have.
06:37Why not?
06:38I'm out in time.
06:38I love that your dad
06:39said that.
06:39That's so funny.
06:40You can always rely
06:41on the family.
06:42Yeah, totally.
06:42Thank you so much.
06:43And listen,
06:44I'm from Glasgow,
06:45so if you need a bodyguard
06:46for the banana peels...
06:47You're coming.
06:48I'll do it.
06:48That's where I started
06:49my world tour,
06:50in Glasgow.
06:51I love it.
06:52Amazing, guys.
06:52You've literally made my day.
06:54Thank you so much.
