Saudi Arabia has carried out airstrikes against UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) forces in Yemen’s Hadhramaut governorate, marking a rare and serious escalation between two allies in the anti-Houthi coalition. The strikes targeted STC-aligned Hadhrami Elite Forces in Wadi Nahb, following clashes with a Saudi-aligned tribal leader, though no casualties have been reported. Riyadh had demanded the STC withdraw from Hadhramaut and al-Mahra provinces, but the separatists refused despite UAE support for Saudi security efforts. The UN has warned these developments risk a wider escalation and further fragmentation in Yemen, where Saudi and UAE interests now clash over control of strategic, resource-rich southern regions.

00:00Saudi Arabia carried out airstrikes in Yemen's Hadra Mount Governorate.
00:23The targets were positions held by the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council, the STC, specifically
00:31the Hadrami elite forces in an area known as Wadi Nab.
00:36According to STC-linked media, at least two strikes were reported, with no immediate casualties
00:42confirmed.
00:44These strikes came just one day after clashes between STC fighters and a Saudi-aligned tribal
00:50leader in the same region, who later withdrew.
00:55This marks a rare and serious escalation between Saudi Arabia and the STC, two forces that are
01:01supposed to be on the same side of the wider Yemen conflict.
01:06Just 24 hours earlier, Saudi Arabia had publicly demanded that the STC urgently withdraw from
01:13Hadramaut and al-Mahra, areas the separatists had seized earlier in December.
01:19Fiyad called the STC's moves unilateral, destabilizing and escalatory, saying they undermine Yemen's
01:27fragile stability and the wider anti-Houthi coalition.
01:31The United Arab Emirates, however, backer of the STC, said it supports Saudi efforts to
01:37maintain security.
01:39But despite joint diplomatic outreach, the STC has refused to withdraw.
01:46The United Nations has warned these developments could trigger a much wider escalation, risking
01:52renewed full-scale conflicts with regional consequences.
01:57Footage shared on social media showed smoke rising from strike locations and STC forces regrouping
02:04in the area, evidence of how quickly the situation is intensifying.
02:09Meanwhile, reports suggest Saudi Arabia has been building up troops near the Yemen border, possibly
02:17tens of thousands, signaling the potential for further intervention.
02:22So, what is this really about?
02:27The conflict in Yemen began in 2014, when Houthi rebels seized the capital, Sana'a.
02:33A year later, Saudi Arabia led a military coalition, including the UAE, to restore the internationally
02:40recognized government.
02:42But while both countries oppose the Houthis, they don't always back the same allies on the
02:47ground.
02:49Saudi Arabia mainly supports the Yemeni government and wants a unified Yemen to protect its southern
02:55border and limit Iranian influence.
02:58The UAE, however, has focused on southern Yemen.
03:02It backs the STC separatists who seek to restore an independent South Yemen, a state that existed
03:09until 1990.
03:11The STC already controls much of the South, including Aden, running what is effectively
03:17a parallel administration.
03:19Their latest push into Hadramaut and Almahra, both strategic and resource-rich regions, has
03:26deepened divisions and angered Saudi Arabia.
03:29Hadramaut is Yemen's largest governorate, home to key oil reserves and trade routes.
03:35Control here means leverage, money and influence.
03:40So despite being Sunni Arab allies, Saudi Arabia and the UAV are now competing, indirectly,
03:48inside Yemen.
03:49It's not about religion, it's about regional power, security and economic interests.
03:56The risk now is that inviting within the anti-Houthi coalition could fracture Yemen even further,
04:03reignite large-scale conflict and worsen an already devastating humanitarian crisis.
04:09As the United Nations warns, Yemen stands at a dangerous crossroads.
04:15Will the coalition pull back from confrontation?
04:18Or are we witnessing the beginning of a new phase in a war that has lasted over a decade?
04:25Only time will tell.
