00:00Hemingway invites us up to his room to have a drink, and my friend Jack Tiger ambles over

00:09to a closet. He opens the door. You won't believe it. Shells full of canned sardines,

00:16chocolate bars with almonds, piles of best American cigarettes. It was like running into

00:20a gold mine. And Jack just opens up his bandolone and starts loading, and he fills it up to the

00:27hilt. And Hemingway is looking at him in absolute amazement. And finally he says, what the fuck

00:33do you think you're doing? He says, you can see what I'm doing. I'm loading up.

00:49You must be doing something right if they put your ass in jail or beat on you, and you haven't

00:55committed any crime. I went to call the Spanish consulant and tell him that on Thursday at

01:01noon that they're all going to be blown to smithereens. I was fortunate to be told through a leak that

01:08I was probably going to be picked up in a few days, and I chose to take off and become underground.

02:50completely oblivious to his age. I was impressed at this tiger of a man, busy like a bee, going here,

03:03lecturing there. Most young people have inside them a bit of a torch of idealism. That's my job,

03:10lighting their torches. I'm 86 years old. I have aches and pains and from heart and all that,

03:16but I still have more piss and vinegar than most of you. He's one of those speakers that you leave and

03:21you feel so excited. His ideas on being politically active. There are really people who went through

03:27their entire lives still believing that you have to do what's right with yourself. There is a better way to

03:31live than the options which are given by the culture in which they live.

03:39We have something which the more you give of it, the more you have. And that's human love

03:45and compassion. Abe's vision. He's passionate. I think he's passionate more than anything else.

03:52How to organize people, how to play the media, how to, what kind of pressure to bring. He was a bit

03:57larger than life. He dazzled. To resist forces of evil. You did whatever you could to fight the cancer

04:06in our society.
