Taiwan is getting its first Christmas off in over two decades. While the holiday isn't meant to celebrate Christmas specifically (it's officially designated Constitution Day), the country is still getting into the Christmas spirit.
Transcript
00:00December 25th hasn't been a public holiday in Taiwan for over two decades, but this year
00:05lawmakers have brought it back.
00:07But the holiday isn't about Christmas, it's about observing the ratification of Taiwan's
00:12constitution, officially the Republic of China's constitution, which happened on December 25th,
00:181946.
00:20Even so, the Christmas spirit is very much alive here in Taiwan.
00:23Here in New Taipei City's Banqiao District, an annual Christmas land fair is in full swing.
00:30But alongside the Christmas decorations is also an increased police presence.
00:34That's because a knife attack in Taipei last week left four dead, putting authorities and
00:40the public on edge.
00:41Even so, people have been telling Taiwan Plus that that won't stop them from celebrating
00:45Christmas.
00:46But while people in Taiwan go out and about enjoying the winter holidays, the government
01:07says that it's still going to tighten security at events like these.
01:11That's because even though the end of the year is a time for fun and festivities, officials
01:15say that safety is still a top priority.
