00:00Why does Stranger Things make you feel like you're remembering your childhood?
00:03If the series makes you feel like you're remembering a childhood you never experienced,
00:07Well, that's perfectly normal because the series was designed that way.
00:10The de Fur brothers were directly inspired by Steven Spielberg,
00:14with E.T., The Goonies or even 3rd Team Encounters.
00:17And in Spielberg's films, the world is filmed from a child's perspective.
00:20The adults are absent, overwhelmed, or useless.
00:23And it's exactly like in Stranger Things.
00:26If you watch the cycling scene in episode 1,
00:28Well, there's the night, there's a low-angle shot,
00:30and silhouettes that are cut out by streetlights.
00:33And it's exactly the same visual grammar as in E.T.
00:36And we have the same thing with the relationship between Mike and Eleven.
00:39It's exactly modeled on the relationship between Elliot and E.T.
00:42He is a marginalized, misunderstood being, protected by a child.
00:46and an emotional separation that is traumatic.
00:49And your brain doesn't analyze the reference at all.
00:51He adopts the emotional perspective of childhood.
00:54And Stranger Things doesn't remind you of your past.
00:56This series makes you feel what it was like not to understand the world.
01:00Let me know in the comments if you knew that.
