00:00This can't be real.
00:02You're the devil, isn't you?
00:05Sammy!
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at the scariest and most entertaining horror movies that received a general release in 2025.
00:13I'm so sorry to hear that.
00:15I am sorry to tell you this, sweetie, but I am on the verge of collapse.
00:21Number 10. Blackphone 2
00:23An annual list like this wouldn't be complete without Blumhouse.
00:26Who is this? Who are you?
00:30Hello? Hello?
00:36The studio's best effort this year was easily Blackphone 2, a rare horror follow-up that's almost as fresh as its predecessor.
00:42Part of that's because director Scott Derrickson doesn't simply repeat what we've seen before.
00:47Hello?
00:49Hello?
00:51Who's this?
00:54Hulk? Hulk Adler? Who's this?
00:57He elaborates on the first film's lore, turning Ethan Hawke's grabber into a modern-day Freddy Krueger.
01:02Have you guessed what it is yet?
01:06What it is that I want from you.
01:11While the story takes its time building to the grabber's return, the audience doesn't grow restless.
01:15If you're trying to touch me, I'll scratch your face.
01:23This face?
01:24This is largely thanks to the performances from Mason Thames, and especially Madeline McGraw,
01:29who are on their way from being gifted child stars to promising young adult actors.
01:33Hey! Hey! Look at me! Wake up! Wake up!
01:36Hey! Hey!
01:38What's happening to me?
01:41Oh god, I feel crazy!
01:43You were dreaming! You're okay!
01:44Once again balancing scares with heart, this is one sequel you shouldn't send straight to voicemail.
01:49Number 9. Final Destination Bloodlines
01:52After the last Final Destination sequel brought things full circle,
01:55we didn't think a legacy sequel was necessarily 14 years ago.
01:58A kid had a panic attack and wanted off the plane. He said he had some kind of vision.
02:04No.
02:07Oh my god!
02:08Bloodlines quickly dashed any doubts, with one of the franchise's most ambitious, creative, and bloody sequences ever.
02:15The film doesn't lose momentum from there, playing with new ideas, while expanding upon concepts introduced in previous films.
02:21This book is a lifeline. It will show you everything you need to know to keep our family safe.
02:28You still don't believe me?
02:30Namely, we finally delve into the backstory of Tony Todd's William Bloodworth.
02:34As usual, his screen time is limited, but Todd leaves a lasting impression in what would be his final film role.
02:39There are only two ways. By killing, or by dying.
02:45If you take a life, you get the time that person had left.
02:49For a series that delights in gleefully killing characters off, we didn't expect a Final Destination movie to get us choked up.
02:55Todd's parting words are as perfect as an actress' exit can be, however.
02:59Life is precious.
03:02Enjoy every single second.
03:05You never know when.
03:07Number 8.
03:08Together
03:08Dave Franco and Alison Brie are married in real life, which works to this film's advantage.
03:13In front of the people who mean the most to us,
03:17I want to ask you to spend the rest of your life with me.
03:21Together requires leads who share a mutual trust, are willing to see each other at their worst, and won't run when things get ugly.
03:28Do you feel that?
03:30It feels...
03:31Crowded.
03:36Gotta get out of here.
03:38Things get very messy in Michael Shank's feature directorial debut, but that's commitment for you.
03:42Are we really not going to talk about last night?
03:44You're acting...
03:45Am I crazy?
03:46That's not what I was saying.
03:47I was unconscious, okay?
03:47I didn't know what I was doing.
03:48If you're sick, you should stay home.
03:50Come on, I can't miss the train.
03:51While there might be a satirical element to this body horror film,
03:54it does thoughtfully explore what it means to be in a relationship.
03:57It's natural for an individual to want space.
04:00Since the move, Tim and I haven't been on the same page.
04:05Then, maybe we haven't been on the same page for a while.
04:08When you share a life with someone, though, that space always gets smaller.
04:12It's uncomfortable, scary, and not without sacrifice.
04:20If this person is truly your better half, however, you may emerge as the best version of yourself.
04:27Number 7.
04:28Companion
04:29At first, we were concerned that the advertising for Companion had spoiled the biggest twist.
04:33Yeah, no, she's not going anywhere.
04:35She can't hurt anybody ever again.
04:38Okay.
04:40Okay, great.
04:43Maybe that's why Drew Hancock's first feature wasn't the blockbuster it deserved to be.
04:47But trust us, there's much more to the story than what the trailer gives away.
04:50That's just the setup.
04:52This was not part of the plan.
04:54Look, I know, and I'm sorry, but I mean, considering everything she's done for us,
04:58I figured she was at least owed an explanation.
05:00It's where Companion goes from there that makes it one of the year's most fun and unpredictable watches.
05:04Sophie Thatcher turns in her best performance yet, as a young woman breaking free from the chains of her relationship.
05:20While Jack Quaid can be a likable everyman, we think he's even better when playing an SOB.
05:25Hi.
05:26Hi, Ansem.
05:28Are you enjoying your dinner, baby?
05:31Oh, I am, Patrick.
05:32It's perfect.
05:34Their dynamic, coupled with a strong supporting cast and clever screenplay, makes for an experience that's anything but artificial.
05:40I needed to tell you to your face, the days of you controlling me are over.
05:48From this moment on, I control my own actions.
05:51Number 6.
05:52Bring Her Back
05:53Sally Hawkins typically portrays characters who are warm and nurturing, making them irresistible to the audience.
05:59Oh, that's great.
06:02That's lovely.
06:03Look at that.
06:05Oh, someone needs to meet Pom Pom.
06:08Oh, who's Pom Pom?
06:10The idea of her playing a demented figure like foster mother Laura might seem like a stretch.
06:14Yet, directors Danny and Michael Filippo, who previously made Talk to Me, had brilliant instincts in casting Hawkins.
06:21If some people believe the spirit stays in the body for months after death, if that's true, then he's still in there.
06:29She doesn't entirely play against type, as Laura does have a maternal side.
06:33This leads her to take desperate measures, though, creating an antagonist who's as tragic as she is unhinged.
06:38I'd give anything to her. Call me mum one more time.
06:46Just one more time.
06:47Bring Her Back also has three discoveries in Billy Barrett,
06:50Sora Wong, and Jonah Wren Phillips, the latter of whom, in particular, shows no fear in going through the body horror ringer.
06:56Are you in there?
07:00Is this part of it?
07:04Did I do it right?
07:05We're confident that all of them will be back in future projects.
07:08Number 5. 28 Years Later
07:10We may never get 28 months later, but 28 years later was worth the wait.
07:20Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return to the franchise, although they don't merely turn in a rehash of their 2002 zombie classic.
07:26What is it?
07:29A frisbee.
07:30You've never seen a frisbee before?
07:32Oh, it's great.
07:34You're gonna love it.
07:35They shift the focus to an island community that's managed to isolate itself from the neighbouring rage virus that remains rampant across the tide.
07:43As the characters inevitably make their way to the infected zone, they find themselves at the gates of hell, or maybe heaven, depending on how you interpret this purgatory.
07:50It means, remember death. Remember, you must die.
07:58Alfie Williams gives one of the year's strongest breakout performances, while Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes dominate every scene they're in.
08:05Doctor, doctor, please.
08:10It was so hard to get here.
08:14It was so hard to find you.
08:16It's fine, come here.
08:16The zombies are also instant icons, with the makeup team going above and beyond.
08:21Number four, The Long Walk.
08:23It's been a great year for Stephen King adaptations, with each having a distinct signature.
08:27When the system backs people into a corner, points to an escape hatch, and says, that's the only way out.
08:33Of course we're all gonna try to go through it. We've been set up to believe it's the only way, the honourable way.
08:38The monkey mixed creepy vibes with absurd comedy.
08:40The Long Walk, meanwhile, was a more grounded thriller with an unnerving premise.
08:44When this is broadcast for all the states, your inspiration will continue to elevate our gross national product.
08:53The corrupt military enlists a group of young men to march until only one is left standing.
08:58Despite being in competition, a powerful camaraderie develops among the young cast, which includes Cooper Hoffman and David Johnson.
09:05You see, we, we gotta think different.
09:07We don't think about making it to the end, we think about moments.
09:10Just, just making it to the next moment.
09:13Yeah.
09:13Everyone knows, however, that whatever friendships are formed, will be short-lived.
09:18It's probably not a coincidence that King wrote the source material during the Vietnam War,
09:22when friends were bound to be lost, and the aftermath left the survivors asking, what was the point of it all?
09:27I'm so sorry, Mom!
09:29I'm so sorry, Mom!
09:31I'm so sorry, Mom!
09:32Think about you, Mom!
09:34Think about you, Mom!
09:34Think about you, Father.
09:34Think about you, Father.
09:34Think about you, Father.
09:34I don't know what I think about you.
09:35I'm so sorry, Mom!
09:38Number 3.
09:39Frankenstein.
09:40Bring.
09:40Him.
09:41Do.
09:42Do.
09:43Me.
09:43Mary Shelley's novel has been retold so many times, that you didn't think anybody would
09:49be able to bring something fresh to the table, unless it was Guillermo del Toro.
09:52While he remains mostly faithful to the source material, this is del Toro's Frankenstein through
09:57and through.
09:57Show that man may pursue nature to her hiding places, and stop death.
10:03Not slow it down, but stop it entirely!
10:06It's no surprise that this is a visual feat, with every shot draped in gothic horror.
10:11Victor.
10:16Victor.
10:17Yes?
10:18Yes, yes, yes, yes.
10:20Of course you are.
10:21The makeup, in particular, is god-tier, not just for Jacob Elordi's creature, but did you
10:25even notice that Mia Goth has a dual role here?
10:28Come, come, I'll show you my notes first.
10:29Is my uncle here?
10:32What?
10:33My uncle, is he here?
10:35No, no.
10:36No, I'm alone.
10:37There's soul behind the craft, giving us a creature who's ironically more human than
10:41his creator.
10:42Elordi's performance adds nuances to the creature rarely seen in Frankenstein adaptations,
10:47showing that being alive isn't the same as living.
10:49Victor!
10:52Victor!
10:55Number 2.
11:02Weapons.
11:02She was going to her classroom just like every morning.
11:06But today was different.
11:10Today, none of her kids were there.
11:12On the heels of Barbarian, Zach Kregor has made another horror film that's every bit as
11:16mind-blowing, but on a larger scale that doesn't overshadow the scares.
11:20Now, when I tell you that you are not to speak about me or your parents to anyone,
11:27you understand what can happen if you break your promise.
11:30The premise, which centers on a classroom of children who flee from their houses in the
11:34middle of the night, sounds like an urban legend that you tell around the campfire.
11:37I see something that I don't understand at all.
11:41We're talking about 17 kids in one classroom, and none of them talked about it.
11:47Where most urban legends are left vague, though, Kregor pulls back the curtain, unveiling the
11:51mystery from different perspectives.
11:53The way I see it, I did you wrong, you did me wrong, let's just call it a day.
11:59But if I see you out here again, it's going to be a different story.
12:02What we find is shocking, unsettling, hilarious, and unforgettable.
12:07Weapons is full of images that'll remain burned in our minds, most notably Amy Madigan's
12:11unrecognizable turn as Aunt Gladys.
12:13Who made the complaint?
12:15I'm not at liberty to say.
12:20Well, this is very upsetting.
12:22We're still wrapping our brains around the fact that she was the mom in Field of Dreams.
12:25Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
12:29The Ugly Stepsister.
12:30The slipper doesn't fit, but that's nothing some body horror can't solve.
12:33Papa?
12:35Papa?
12:38Papa?
12:43Papa?
12:43Hard Eyes.
12:4450% slasher flick, 50% rom-com.
12:47Or H-E-K, as authorities call them for short, has emerged on a day meant for romance to target,
12:54hunt, and brutally kill couples.
12:56Clown in a cornfield.
12:57Forget the children of the corn.
12:58It's the clowns you need to watch out for.
13:01There's one shot left.
13:04Rustler.
13:05I'm really sorry.
13:06Tell me about it later.
13:07I'll be right behind you.
13:10The Conjuring Last Rites.
13:12A satisfying final bow for the Warrens.
13:14Unless WB decides there's still money in this.
13:17There is.
13:17It's hiding behind them.
13:20Demonic?
13:22It's controlling the spirits.
13:24It's using them against the Smurls.
13:26Good Boy.
13:27The horror movie told from a dog's POV.
13:30Not the 2003 family comedy.
13:32Am I crazy?
13:34It's nice here.
13:35Right?
13:38Right?
13:40Indie.
13:42Right?

13:57Number 1.
14:01Sinners.
14:02Back up.
14:03Y'all gotta help?
14:05I thought I could trust them, but they're trying to kill me.
14:08Slow down.
14:08Who's trying to kill you?
14:09Choctaw.
14:10Ryan Coogler's blockbuster isn't just the best horror movie of 2025.
14:14We'd argue that it's also one of the year's best musicals, with a soundtrack that's every bit as essential as the blood.
14:19When they say the truth hurts, so I lied to you.
14:25Yes, I lied to you.
14:27Funny to think how we got multiple movies this year, where musicians hunt demonic creatures.
14:32In this case, the characters aren't just fighting for their lives as vampires infiltrate their juke joint.
14:36Admit to it.
14:38Admit to what?
14:40That you're dead.
14:42That one of them white folks out there killed you and you a hate now.
14:45They're fighting for their identity, which others seek to suck out as their own life force.
14:50That's just one of the many themes Sinners leaves the audience to sink their teeth into.
14:54Be strong.
14:54Him?
14:56Him?
15:00I got some business to handle.
15:02Beyond the clever symbolism, Sinners is a masterfully crafted, exceptionally acted entertainment,
15:07with thrills that'll keep you awake until the sun comes up.
15:10What's your favorite horror movie of 2025?
15:12Let us know in the comments.
15:15God bless you.
15:17God bless you.
