00:01On this day in space
00:03In 1961, France's space agency was born.
00:07After more than a decade of experimenting with rockets and missiles under the country's Department of Defense,
00:11President Charles de Gaulle finally decided that France needed an official governmental space research organization,
00:16and he signed the creation of the Centre National d'Études Spatiales,
00:20which in English is the National Centre for Space Studies.
00:23De Gaulle established the agency to coordinate French space activities like rocket launches and astronaut training,
00:29and eventually the launch of the first and only cat to go to space.
00:33Happy Birthday CNES!
00:35And that's what happened on this day in space.
