00:00Christmas decorations made from handmade glass beads,
00:03an ancient craft from the north of Czech Republic.
00:10I'm Barbara Kulhava and I'd like to invite you to our production of Christmas ornaments.
00:16Barbara Kulhava runs the family business Rautis together with her husband Marek.
00:22To produce the beads, hollow glass rods are first heated and pressed into a mold.
00:30Then the beads are silver plated on the inside.
00:33This involves pouring different solutions together which react with the air.
00:39Then the beads are dyed. After dyeing, the individual beads are cut.
00:48Originally, the beads were used as jewelry in traditional garments.
00:52Today the beads are threaded into Christmas ornaments.
00:54The trend of decorating Christmas trees began at the 19th century.
01:04The beads were perfect for Christmas ornaments.
01:07They are tiny, they are light and they are glittery.
01:10The ornaments are available in many different patterns and sizes.
01:14They cost between 5 and 50 euros.
01:16The Christmas decorations are exported all over the world.
