00:00In 1997, a young Rahul Dravet began cementing his legacy as the wall during his median tour
00:07of the Caribbean showcasing the legendary grit that would later define his career.
00:12In the first test at Kingston, which began on March 6, 1997, Rahul Dravet anchored the
00:17second innings with a solid unbeaten 51 run. Facing a fierce West Indies pace attack,
00:23he spent 161 minutes at the crease and weathered 141 deliveries, striking 5-4s to secure
00:29his first test 50 on the Caribbean soil. This performance offered a glimpse into the future
00:35of Mr. Dependable, providing a vintage memory of a master technician at work.
00:59Rahul Dravet really came back into him.
01:09That's very well hit. Really put the bat onto that one Dravet.
01:14Saw a similar shot from him in the first innings.
01:18Saw that short and he really climbed into it.
01:22Well, this is short, but Rahul Dravet is positive. In the earlier row from Ambrose,
01:27he was just a little bit unsure whether to duck or not. He got into trouble. The ball brushed his helmet
01:33then. Now he's decided that he's not going to take his eyes off the ball. Be positive.
01:38It's a lovely shot. Outfield has been slowed up by the rain we've had, but they'll come back for
01:58four, three quite comfortably.
02:16Ha, ha, ha.
02:26Yes, fire!
02:28I think we can tell that Michael holding on his hoop-up.
02:38They'll be looking for a second here.
02:43I don't know what the hesitation was about.
02:45Oh, yes, hoop-zee. I like the same hoop-zee.
02:50I suppose the Indians will be bolstered by the fact that the younger batsmen have got runs.
02:55They won't be all that concerned yet that Tendulkar and Asruddin haven't got any runs in the tour.
03:02I think they know that they are such good players that they must come.
03:04Risk getting out here. Getting out could damage my confidence.
03:09But he's seen the need for time at the crease before looking after Tendulkar's self-confidence.
03:15They know that he hasn't had a terribly easy time of late, hasn't made the runs that he would do.
03:19And what you do by then, you say to the next young player, Ganguly, you'll have to go in.
03:24And he says, well, why should I?
03:26The West Indies.
03:28Franklin Rose bowling for the West Indies.
03:29There's Kumbay taking eight wickets in the match, coming back into form.
03:48And it nearly worked.
03:50Sweep out of the rough.
03:52Nearly got him. Could the ball he should be hitting?
03:54Tendulkar's rushing the single. He knows that Walsh hasn't really got a throwing arm,
04:02so it's much so made in the first innings.
04:05This one's taken virtually as long in terms of balls faced.
04:08And that'll bring it.
04:10And a nice way to do so. Just a little cut through point.
04:14And Dravid goes to 50. He'll make plenty more in test match cricket that will mean plenty more.
04:20But he's earned this with the virtue of other performances.
04:24He's a good young player, and this innings, to take it in its context, when the cricket becomes
04:32soporific, everybody's just going through the motions.
04:36Little lollipop bowlers are on, just tossing it up. Everybody spreads out.
04:40And increasing. There was a very interesting piece in this morning's newspaper locally with
04:46Courtney Walsh that said, well, Courtney was quoted as saying that he had no intention of giving up.
04:51He was feeling good. And while he felt good and was bowling all right, he'd continue.
04:56Malcolm Marshall has the world record for a West Indian. Oh, dear.
05:01Didn't really bounce at all. Dravid is expecting the ball to fly through.
05:05Walsh banging it in, but really it's not getting much above chest height.
05:09It's actually sometimes harder to play a short ball when it doesn't bounce.
05:24So Rahul Dravid celebrated for his impeccable batting technique. He is revered as one of the
05:30cricket's greatest best man, amassing 24,177 runs in international cricket. His legacy is marked by
05:38significant teams and individual accolades. He was part of the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy-winning
05:45squad and, in a testament for his versatility, later guided the Indian team to victory in the
05:512024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup as head coach. Rahul Dravid, as he is famously known,
05:58holds unique record for facing the most balls and spending the longest time batting in test
06:03cricket. His individual honors include being named a Wizarding Cricketer of the Year in 2000
06:09and sweeping the Player of the Test Player of the Year awards at the 2004 ICC Ceremony.
06:14After retiring from limited-over formats in 2011 and test cricket in 2012, Rahul Dravid's storied
06:21career was permanently recognized with his induction into the ICC Hall of Fame in July 2018.
