00:00We are looking at a mom with two cubs of the year, so they are just under about a year old,
00:11but one of the cubs has been adopted. This female is about five years old. She was captured this
00:18spring with one cub, and when they saw her again this fall, she had two cubs, and the second cub
00:24was untagged. So at some point in the last year, she has taken on this extra cub. Right now, these
00:31bears should be out on the sea ice, and this mom is looking for seals. She's trying to eat as much
00:36as she can as soon as she can and teach her little cubs, both of them, how to hunt and how to be polar
00:41bears. The survival rate for cubs to make it to adulthood is not great. It's around 50% give or
00:48take depending on the year, but we know that if a little cub has no mom, it has almost no chance.
00:54So the fact that this cub got adopted and has a chance to learn lessons about being a bear
01:01and to be taken care of for a couple years really does give it a shot at making it to adulthood.
