00:00My dog and I will be camping in a snowstorm. We're gonna have a hot tent, eat some good food.

00:11This is gonna be a good one. I've got a ton of gear to keep my dog and I safe tonight. Although
00:16we're gonna sleep through a snowstorm, we also want to be warm. I've got my anchor power bank
00:22accessible. It's compact but it's reliable in the winter and that's the most important thing out
00:26here. If my phone dies and I can't contact emergency services or use my maps, there's gonna be a
00:32problem. I spent a lot of time trying to find this spot so I have to get my tent set up as soon as
00:40possible because the sun is going down in just a couple hours. I'm still not certain if I can find
00:46a good spot but we're gonna try. The sun is going down quick. We are surrounded by some really dense
00:53forest. There are mountain lions here and I hope the bears have hibernated by now
00:58but still there are definitely predators in this area.

01:15Good boy. Good boy. It's starting to snow. I did bring some firewood
01:22to get the fire started but it's not enough to last us through the night so I need to get more.
01:46These stakes are not going into the ground.
01:48I might have to figure out another solution. The pegs that come with the hot tent keep getting bent
01:56so I brought my own stakes that are a bit higher quality. The thing with hot tents is there's usually
02:02a lot of pegs at least on this one. If I can't get these into the ground I'll have to find a way to
02:07either bury the pegs or find rocks.
02:21It's only coming down now. Oh the ground is so frozen. No point in a tarp if it's covered in snow anyways, eh?
02:43So my issue is I have been hammering pegs into the ground for over an hour.
02:57We are on what seems like bedrock and I didn't foresee this being an issue. I thought it would be
03:17more of a dirt pathway. All of the rocks are covered. I have about 30 minutes until it's dark.
03:24I got it to kind of an acceptable amount but with a regular tent it's not as big of a deal
03:30if your pegs aren't down. I mean it will blow if it's super windy at night but because there's a fire
03:36in this tent your pegs cannot come undone. It will catch the tent on fire. Canvas is a better material
03:43but you still have to make sure your pegs are in strong. Because it's below freezing another strategy you can do
03:54so you bury it in snow and then you add a little water
04:00and in a couple minutes that will freeze into an ice cube. It's hard to get them out the next day but
04:05we're gonna try oh I've got a carbon monoxide detector just tested it and we've got batteries.

04:38devices at once. It's super durable for the outdoors and for cold weather and it has a large battery
04:45capacity so I can charge all of my tech. My camera gear, my lights. It gets dark so early here so lighting
04:52is so important. It has 26,000 milliamp hours. The hardest part about winter camping is finding the spot.
04:59The second hardest part is getting the tent set up. As long as you've got firewood you're cruising.

05:47Oh it's really coming down! Okay I'm gonna get the fire going now so we can warm up. I've got some kindling.

06:03Bonus it's a moisturizer for your hands because it's dry in the winter.
06:07I've got these little fire starter blocks. One square will burn for a few minutes so it helps
06:19catch the wood. It probably would have been fine without it but I have very limited wood so I need to
06:24make sure this light's good. This pipe is already getting really hot. You can see steam coming off
06:31my pants because they're wet and they're slowly drying. Now that we're in safe warm tent I'm gonna
06:38get our bed set up and I hope all the pieces are in here. Again this is the first time since last year
06:44that I've used all of this equipment.
06:49So it's about negative five out there. Let's see how warm we can get the hot tent. It's really important.
06:54Kira and I are both up off the ground so I have a cot. Can't let anything touch the hot stove or it will melt.
07:02Tomorrow we'll do some exploring but I think today you want to really give yourself enough
07:08time to set up camp and make food so I don't think we're going to be able to explore until tomorrow.

08:17People bring guns here and do uh some some shooting uh practice shooting. Probably only
08:24during the summer but. After driving and hiking through the snow to get here, finding a quiet
08:29corner of the forest where I can harvest my own firewood and keep myself and my dog safe and warm
08:35through the night. It's hard work but the satisfaction of taking care of yourself in the outdoors,
08:41especially in extreme conditions, is deeply fulfilling.
08:44It's the kind of challenge that makes you feel truly alive. And Anker Prime has always been our

09:21experience last winter but I'm gonna give it a try when we're ready to go to bed. But I have to keep
09:25it really hot for now. Mini cast iron. We're doing buffalo chicken dip. So I've got some cream cheese.
09:37Ranch in a bottle. So normally it's cream cheese, ranch, chicken and cheddar cheese and you put it in
09:43the oven. Oh and Frank's red hot sauce but I don't like spicy so I'm doing no spice. Mix those together.
09:51I've never made this camping before so this is an experiment. This is cooked shredded chicken. Oh all of a sudden Kiro's awake.
10:02This is a very shallow dish and I do not want to get any of this in the tent. I've never really
10:08been as scared of wolves but for some reason wolves are in my head right now. I'm just in a little bit
10:12more of a remote area than normal. Okay that's the base. My food never looks good but it tastes good.
10:20I don't have a cheese grater that was not a part of the ultralight pack.
10:25I might put it directly on the stove but we'll see how that goes.
10:39These are snow gaiters so you put them over your shoes so that your hiking boots turn into
10:43tall winter boots. So it's over 10 degrees in here or 50 degrees fahrenheit. It's hard to see with this
10:49little thermometer sizzling. That's cooked. Six minutes? Seven minutes?
11:05I kept my chips safe by putting them in my pot. Breakfast tomorrow? Chips.
11:19Wow. Got some maple cookies for dessert.

11:31My phone is mostly charged and it's only at 95 percent.
11:35I put my pajama pants on. They're fleece lined so that if they were to get wet they would dry
11:41and keep me warm. I only have one of my insulated slippers. I must have left the other one at home.
11:47Always change your socks before bed because anything that's slightly wet will make you more cold.
11:53Always go to bed with a hat and gloves. Oh my gloves are wet. Keep them by the fire to dry them off.
11:58In an hour or so those will be toasty. Kiro, I have a couple different options. I think he has to go to the bathroom.
12:04But I could make a bed for him here. I brought his own sleeping bag. Okay, last pee break.
12:08But I think it'll be warmer if we both sleep on this cot. One of my feet are so much warmer.
12:20I laid the cot with the wool blanket so it's another layer of insulation. I didn't put my sleeping pad out
12:25because I don't think we need it and and if it ever touches the stove it will burn. So I really like
12:31this cot for that reason. Stay done. So all that's left to do is listen to some audio books because
12:46I don't have any movies downloaded. Ah, there we go. I even have a bedside table where I can charge my
12:55phone on there. After all, we are also part of nature. It is okay to use wood as long as trees
13:02are allowed to live in a way that is appropriate to their species. Lumber from forests with such
13:08species-appropriate tree management can be used with no qualms of conscience.

13:38The heat is melting the snow that's on the outside of the tent. I can see it rolling.
13:51My water didn't freeze last night. I kept it in my bag so it had a little bit of insulation around it.
13:58My protein bar is solid so I'm gonna just let it warm up a little bit.
14:03Did you want to go exploring? Yes. I know, but I just have to clean up a little bit and have my coffee.
14:12I threw the drone up and there's a gorgeous river that I want to explore. I am so warm by this fire.
14:20This jacket has kept Kiro so warm. When I feel his fur, it's like a layer of heat under there.
14:26Okay, we're getting some steam.
14:40I mean, I prefer a vanilla latte, but black coffee will do it. I charged everything last night.
14:46GoPro, phone, this light, a separate GoPro light. I've got the light at the top of the tent and I've
14:52still got half the battery life. In the winter, everything dies so quickly. The cold is a battery's
14:58enemy, so I usually sleep with my phone tucked into my sleeping bag. But when we go on the hike,
15:04I'll just bring this and we're good to go. Because I'm using big logs, this was sticking out a little
15:09bit and I had an ash pop out. That's okay. I can always patch it. Not all hot tents come with ground
15:15sheets, but I really like it. Otherwise, I'm sitting on the ground right now. It's fine. But if this goes
15:22directly on the tarp, then you'll have a puddle. So this, I just used the lid of my Rubbermaid bin.
15:29That guy doesn't melt the snow as much. It actually makes a really sturdy base and it catches ash.

15:41Oh my boots are frozen. There's snow in there. We're going into some snow.
15:54I got the gators on. We're gonna go see if we can find that river. The snow is really deep here.
16:00This is filled with prickly bushes. I tried to go through and Kira said no. If you're trying to
16:04find a winter camping spot, a lot of the back roads are going to be packed with snow. So I suggest
16:10finding an old logging road and parking at the bottom of it and then sledding in. The issue around
16:16here is finding one that's not up a mountain because it's hard to pull a sled. Into the woods we go.
16:22I can hear it. These are deer footprints. Look at that cute little hoof. Oh my gosh, it's beautiful. This
16:33is stunning. Oh, this is going to be some fresh drinking water. It's a bit of a steep hill to get
16:42down there. Oh, this is beautiful. I wish I could have brought my tent down here.
16:46Look at those prickles. There we go. Oh, jeez. Oh yeah, there's a little beach here.
16:58You can do it. Oh, good boy. I'm assuming the edges of this river will freeze, but it's pretty
17:06fast moving, so I'm not sure if the whole thing would freeze.
17:09I think we found a quicker way out, but Kirill put his feet in the water, so we have to get back
17:18to the tent. This feels good for the soul, and when you're moving, it's not even that cold. I found
17:25a bushcraft shelter. Should I camp right here? Oh, there's a tire. Okay, comment below if you think
17:34I should come back and fix this shelter up. It's right beside the river. Oh, no way. I found my
17:42people. Look at this platform, but the chances of running into people in the winter are slim. In this
17:51type of weather, batteries do not last long, so I've got my Anker Prime power bank, and I can just
17:57plug my phone into it. Oh, that's some deep snow, and then I pretty much just rotate filming from my
18:04phone to my GoPro. Okay, Kirill made it back to the path and out of this deep snow. Can you
18:10supervise, please? It's starting to snow again. I think I'm going to pack up before it gets too bad,
18:18plus it's going to get dark in just a couple hours again. Just cleaning it up a little bit.

19:20it's a snowstorm this is my first time using the hot tent since i've lived in my tiny cabin
19:31so i don't know where i'm gonna dry that hot tent out but it's gotta get laid out because
19:35it's gonna be soaking wet and get moldy oh it's a puppy print on it oh it's frozen oh my fingers
