Marcos rejects PH label as 'ISIS training spot'

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. dismisses as 'misleading' claims branding the Philippines as a hotspot for Islamic State training, amid reports that the suspects in the Bondi Beach shooting incident in Sydney had previously traveled to the country. Citing a statement from the National Security Council (NSC), Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said during a press conference on Dec. 17, 2025 that there was no validated report or confirmation that the individuals involved in the Bondi Beach incident received any form of training in the Philippines.

00:00Newslet, dahil po sa report kahapon na mayroong, o umasok sa bansa, yung mag-amang galman,
00:06sa Bondi Beach Massacre sa Australia, before yung nangyaring mass shooting,
00:11may ilang foreign media po ngayon na nagdalarawan sa Pilipinas as an ISIS training hotspot or terror hotspot.
00:19Ano po yung, what is Malacanang's position regarding this statement po?
00:23Of course, the President strongly rejects the sweeping statement and the misleading characterization of the Philippines as the ISIS training hotspot.
00:35At dahil dito ay napanayan po natin, o nakausap po natin mismo, ang pamunan ng NSC, at ito po ang tanginang tugol at aking babasahin.
00:45Regarding reports describing the Philippines as an ISIS hotspot, the characterization is misleading.
00:54Currently, there is no validated report or confirmation that individuals involved in the Bondi Beach incident received any form of training in the Philippines.
01:05Philippine authorities, in coordination with international partners, continue to verify all available information,
01:12but no evidence has been presented to support claims that the country was used for terrorist training.
01:20Since the 2017 Marawi siege, Philippine security forces have significantly degraded ISIS-affiliated groups in the country.
01:29Both United Nations and the U.S. government assessments indicate that these groups now operate in a fragmented and diminished capacity.
01:38Violence in Mindanao is largely driven by historical conflicts and local land disputes,
01:46rather than the operational capacity of ISIS-affiliated organizations.
01:52Recent assessments indicate significant improvements in the domestic security environment that were previously affected by terrorism.
02:00These developments reflect the sustained efforts of our security forces and the resilience of our communities in advancing peace, order, and development across the nation.
02:13The President orders the Anti-Terrorism Council and member agencies to remain vigilant in preventing any terrorist activity within Philippine territory,
02:24and to continuously enhance coordination with international partners to safeguard national security.
02:33Yan po ang responde ng NSE sa issue na po yan.
02:54The President here
